Want cancer? Want to go nuts? Go vegetarian!
    #21807956 - 06/14/15 08:13 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

http://www.science20.com/news_articles/vegetarians_found_to_have_more_cancer_allergies_and_mental_health_disorders-133332

Quote:

A cross-sectional study taken from the Austrian Health Interview Survey AT-HIS 2006/07 found that vegetarians are actually less healthy than normal eaters. Subjects were matched according to their age, sex, and socioeconomic status leaving 1320 people - 330 vegetarians, 330 that ate meat but still a lot of fruits and vegetables, 300 normal eaters but that ate less meat, and 330 on a more carnivorous diet.

After controlling for variables, they found that vegetarians did have lower BMI and alcohol consumption but had poorer overall health. Vegetarians had higher incidences of cancer, allergies, and mental health disorders, a higher need for health care, and poorer quality of life.

While this study is not the ultimate metric, I expect the True Believers will be along shortly with hand-wringing and emotionalism to explain why this is so.

Omnivore means both.  Not carnivores and liberal pussies, but meat and vegetables.

Being one or the other defies the point of being an omnivore:shrug:

What the one of the authors had to say about the study,
Quote:

In our opinion, it seems not far to seek that persons with worse health consume a vegetarian diet because they try to develop a better health and eating behavior, and not the opposite, that a certain diet (vegetarian) leads to worse health. We therefore state in our discussion that we can neither say anything about causes or effects, nor about long-term consequences. Moreover, we say that further studies are needed to analyze nutritional habits and their association with health.

No competing interests declared.

from:http://www.plosone.org/annotation/listThread.action?root=78839

So at least one of the Authors of this study doesn't think that the study shows that vegetarianism leads to cancer or insanity. Nathalie T. Burkert has as much as said that the study is no metric at all and throws in an endorsement for vegetarianism to boot.

People who adopt deviant lifestyles are usually poorer performers on all sorts of quality-of-life scales. The same thing, I'm sure, is true of marijuana smokers and no-carb dieters.

Breast Cancer

Unfortunately, the one significant finding was that vegetarians had more breast cancer in the Health Food Shoppers study. That study did not adjust for having children which is protective against breast cancer, and vegetarian women tend to have fewer children.

Notice the escape clause and the choice of the word "unfortunately". Why is that? One cannot do a controlled study to determine trends/facts then make excuses for why the results are different than one's long-held belief. :nono:

Vegetarians are considered healthier, they are wealthier, they are more liberal, they drink less alcohol and they smoke less - but those are a lot of variables in health that don't necessarily result from being a vegetarian.

Ridiculous. "There are a lot of variables that don't necessarily relate to health": How about all of the ones in this study?

This study is about dipping into swaths of statistical corroboration. There is nothing of general evidence about health in what is obviously to any level mind, the cultural values which are being argued for, and constructed based on the pretense of gathering "unbiased" empirical data. Some good old unbiased white bread common sense right?

If you take out the wealthy and healthy portion of a health based study and call it bias, and then speculate about a span of population without these variables, and call the level base of science, what are you talking about?

Vegetarianism is not quantifiable statistical deviance. It is not "cutting things out" of a "normal" (cultural and consumer based) diet, which will for obvious reasons lead to poor health. It is not about cutting things out in one's social life easier, so it is not necessarily a pretension of having culture either.

What this indicates is that when it occurs, vegetarianism seems to be about making a responsible, and possibly holistic or lifestyle based decision. OrgoneConclusion, if it bugs you to see these claims made, then do us all a favor and avoid quoting bunk reductionistic science.
