Greetings Fellow Shroomerites,
I am in need of a piece of software, preferably freeware, that I can use to hide files and folders on my PC. Can anyone recommend a particlular program that you use and are saisfied with?
Thanks - dog

PGP all the way
http://www.pgp.com/products/personal/index.html
"PGP Disk transparently creates volumes whose contents are encrypted when not in use. (Note that this component is not equivalent to PGP Corporate Disk, an information-storage security solution that combines desktop disk security, IT configuration and deployment tools, and advanced key and ADK features for users of PGP Universal.) PGP if you need real security not just to hide things, changing the attributes under properties can hide them from the unskilled user and most cops but using a simple old DOS program like Directory Freedom will allow ANYTHING hidden by windows to be viewed including OS files like MSDOS.SYS and IO.SYS and even the volume recovery folders that arent viewed by windows even with the 'show all' options set.
To hide programs running on the taskbar use DoHide. it minimizes everything to the systray and you can set a hotkey to bring it back up most programs are designed to hide stuff on windows startup which isnt helpful if the drive is used in another machine as a slave
My recomendation is to use PGP Desktop and make use of the drive encryption, only you will be able to access it or anything else you wish to limit access to including the internet if the system is already running. the weak piont with PGP is the time it takes t encrypt/decrypt and boot time
I'll discuss this with a coule of people and see if I can come up with something a little better that isnt visible through DOS or the Forensic utilities I have at my disposal.

You could always use an NTFS partition to lock other users out, then encrypt the files.

NTFS encryption is easy to crack, remember Microsoft is a security flaw, NTFS is OS dependant, a few of the utils I have will allow a CD boot and full access to the drive. PGP is not. NTFS formatting does make it more difficult for a novice but any one in the field will have shot work of it. there are firms that charge a nice chunk of money to do just that
