Slow growth in WBS jars, any extra precautions I should take?
    #21806936 - 06/14/15 03:44 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

So this is my first attempt at a bulk grow with WBS. I'm a little worried, so thought I'd turn to the pros for some advise. There's enough of these posts already, so I apologize adding to the list, but I can't help but be paranoid lol
Here's the steps I took to get where I am now..

- Made lids to qt jars with a single 3/16 hole in the middle stuffed with polyfil.
- Rinsed WBS and filtered out sunflower seeds and other floaters
- Soaked WBS in warm water for 24 hrs
- Dried WBS with hairdryer after becoming impatient waiting for it to air dry
Note: Just to give a description of the water content, I left a pile on toilet paper before loading the jars to check and it left behind nothing. They were somewhat "stuck" together after PCing, which I understand to be normal. But I read that as long as you can shake it loose so they flow smoothly afterward that they're fine, and they did just that. There's no pooling at the bottom, however some seeds are stuck to the along the tops of the jars.
- PC'd jars 6 at a time for 90 min
- inoculated in still air box, about 1.5-2's per jar heating needle with a lighter prior to the start and every 3 jars afterward.
- Placed jars in tub WITH LID SEALED at the top of my closet with doors open.
Note: The tek I was following stated that "the jars will colonize fine in there," which after 3 days I found that colonizing jars need air exchange. The lid was opened at least once each day during that 3 day period, but I am worried that may have had an adverse effect on the jars. The lid is now always left off.

After 10 days (today), I see my first signs of growth

Those are 2 different jars, and there are 10 more not showing signs yet. I understand that seeing growth is a good sign its self, but I noticed they are both toward the bottom of the jar. They were inoculated on the surface, so is that a sign of the top portion of the jars drying out?
Are there any precautions anyone would recommend taking given my circumstances, or does it seem like everything is on track?
Also, I'm using qt jars and they're kept about 75-80F

To test with toilet paper I always put the wbs on top of the paper, not the other way around.

I've never had problems with wbs sticking unless it's overcooked.  Did you use some gypsum with the wbs?

Looks like your wbs is a little compacted.  That might be because you used a hair drier if you used it with a heat setting.

All my jars are also taking quite a while to colonize but 10 days to see anything is a bit much.

I'd recommend being patient and just inoculating more jars for something to do.

If no growth after 30 days I'd ditch the wbs sub, clean+sterilize the jars and start over, using a different brand of wbs or another medium like rye berries.

Good luck!

Man, I'm glad you posted this because I have the exact same problem.  Not trying to hijack your thread or anything, but maybe we can both identify our problem.

I made my jar lids using 1/4 GE with SFD silicon, 1/8 silicon SHIP.  Used Franks tek to rinse and soak with gypsum and weak coffe for 24 hours.  Then did a really light simmer (more like a hot bath) for about 10 minutes.  Let dry for about an hour and moisture content seemed really good.

PC'd for 90 minutes and shook them up to distribute water.

I noc'd them up using MS Syring, got good mycelium growth on top after a few days.  But now they have seems to stall and the WBS just seems really dry inside.  I'm still watching them closely and its been bout 2 weks since the noc up.

Hope this helps you solve your problem as well.

With WBS I find the simmer is key, helps you get the perfect amount of hydration, and the heat helps the seed dry off before you load your jars. Some people get by without the simmer, but I know that the simmer has worked for me every time, and I fucked it up the one time I didn't simmer. I use Doc's tek except I add gypsum.

So it seems WBS is a little too "fragile" for beginners, and I'll go out on a limb here and say the majority of the issues boil down to moisture content.
Are other substrates like rye more fail-safe?

Also, in the event of only having a few jars out of a batch successfully colonize, would it be smart to use them for a G2G with fresh substrate? Can your master jar in a G2G be a different substrate from what you're transfering to? The only way I've ever colonized jars is by using MS syringes, but I'm feeling like it's time to step up.
