My low spawn ratio experiment (1:8-1:12 wbs:hpoo) 2

I know it sounds RIDICULOUS right? Well I'm called mad season, and there has to be a little madness in my methods.
So as I'm sure lots of you have noticed, I'm doing pure horse manure/gypsum trays. Each manure tray in this experiment is spawned with a 1/2 pint jar of a2g bird seed or a 1 pint jar of oats. I take cactus soil and mix with verm 50/50 for a casing layer.
These particular ones are bird seed:
I shake my jars by banging against 2 oven mitts on the counter. RR used a bike tire.
Poured on top of 2-3 quarts of manure (that's right it's between 1:8-1:12 spawn ratio)
This is it mixed so i see a grain every cm-inch and ready to go!
1 day after spawning:

2 days:

9 days later 100% colonized and cased (I decided to leave them untouched for a week and came to fully colonized subs). I use 1 qt of 50/50 cactus soil and verm casings per tray:
I like to let the casing colonize a bit before putting into fruiting. I get way better pinsets if I do.
3 days later thrown into fruiting:
I just use my monotubs pre dialed for fruiting. These particular tubs are 105 qts, and they fit 4 trays almost too perfectly...
Between 8-12 quarts of substrate and 1 quart of bird seed or 2 quarts of oats is used per 105 qt monotub. Isn't that crazy?!
We're following these 3 trays though and their pinset has gotten wild. It's almost too convenient they're all going at the same rates. They're also all different varieties. Ecuador, Cambodian, and creeper. That's why I wanted to post it because I can't believe what is coming out of such a low amount of spawn and substrate stretched over a wide surface area.

Here they come!
This is today. Won't be long now!! :O

Thanks sir
Here's some shots before going to bed:

can't wait for wet weight tomorrow. I reckon a few ounces for sure from less than 1 quart of bird seed.

Went well beyond my expectations... Holy shit. :O
I'll let the pics do the speaking.

Close to 2.5 ounces dry from 1 tray :O. Half a pint of bird seed and 2-3 qts of manure giving 2.5 ounces.. these things are so beastly.

Haha honestly I'm down for that, but I wouldn't say it's what I believe every noob should do. I'd do it just as an experiment and fun experience. I started off doing grain spawn and spawning to manure, just like how I am now. I've just heavily worked on my techniques.
I'd be down to do brf because I've never done it. Hell I've never bucket tekd or used coir. I date a horse girl, so horse manure is outside my door by the truck load.

Definitely need a pressure cooker for anything grain related. Even agar is best pressure cooked (though lab grade bottles say to microwave for 5 minutes).
I got my pcs for free. I'm buying a presto 23 qt tomorrow for under 150, but I have been using an 8 qt and 10 qt pressure cooker for all my previous grows. I upped my pc times to 2.5 hours on grains using them to get success. I'd highly suggest getting a bigger pc, although I made due, it was very time consuming. A good pressure cooker is the first big investment anyone should do if they're going to get serious with this hobby

I think I may know what I'm doing my next grow. . . How easy and safe(I.E. Contam free, etc) to everything from inoculation to harvest in comparison with a BRF crumble & Case? About the same, right?
Beautiful flushes by the way! Love your logs, always informative and visually stimulating!

Well I'd say it's a bit longer working with agar to make clean grain spawn, but overall it's easy. Certain aspects are harder like sterile techniques, but other aspects are far easier like fruiting conditions. I find bulk to be far more fool proof in fruiting over cakes. It's pretty set and forget.
Thanks!! I'm quite happy you think so!
Here's what I came home to. I worked hella late. I'm passing out almost. I'm thinking of leaving it til morning. It's already been spored up a bunch haha. It still looks beautiful!

I've been trying my ass off to get large fruits like the ones in your signature. I'm assuming that those little trays have only 1/2-1 pints of spawn. Which strains are you using? I've been doing Amazonian for over a year, since I'm familiar with it.
My subs are about 3-4" deep and I use 2 qts spawn & 6 qts coir50/verm50. I find coir/verm cheap, so the cost is not an issue, but I was told to use 80% coir, but I've heard that coir doesn't have any actual nutrients nor does vermiculite. Is this true or does it even matter what % I use?
Well, I'm off to pasteurize a shit ton of subs...
Any advice on how to grow big fruits and coir/verm percentages would be greatly appreciated.

I've done basically every variety, and I can't really tell any differences between them. It's just that if you get a few pins, you'll get lots of big fruits. One way or another it seems to equal out in weight. That's why I don't mind if I get a small amount of pins :P
In this experiment I did 1/2 pint bird seed jars spawned to 90% horse manure 10% straw and 5% gypsum. 2-3 qts of substrate per tray(1:8-1:12 spawn ratio). It gives me a 2-3 inch substrate depth. I can see 1.5 ounces first flush dry minimum. Most I've seen is 3 ounces in 1 tray

I missed this during my hiatus.
I like the smaller trays in monos, mostly because they are low and easier to harvest, line, and clean. Hopefully, what I'm working on works out well, too.

I only just recently tried trays and I gotta say, I like them more than I thought I would. Gives you a better chance to get a good clone and better to test cultures with them rather than full blow monotubs.

I love trays. Idk wtf it is about them, but they bring a smile to my face. They're also sexy centre pieces.
There's pros and cons to trays, just like any method; however, they shocked me the first time I used them too. Now I rarely make tubs.

Well, give the fact that 1 good tray can keep you high everyday for a month, a monotub does seem overkill :P.
