Wild propagation of Pleurotus populinus
    #21803792 - 06/13/15 08:46 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

I guess I really have 2 questions.

1) can one get Pleurotus populinus to grow in new places by smearing the gills on dead poplar or aspen trees?

2)  Why is it that in a stand of dead poplar trees and one tree will have many mushrooms and there will be no mushrooms on any other tree?

I came across this species in Wisconsin/Minnesota this year while looking for Morels, and liked them quite a bit.  I'l like to increase their numbers.

smearing spores on a tree is not likeley to work. Best to clone to agar, then inoculate some sawdust jars and spawn those to dowels. Once you have colonized dowels you can drill them into logs. The log will colonize and eventually fruit. For more info check out Paul Stamets. He lives in the Washington area.

i often throw old mushroom caps at the base of dead trees with hopes that they will colonise. but the chances aren't as high as if you put plugs in them. the outside environment of a tree is harsh, dry, sunny, etc. its hard for mycelium to get started. if you get mycelium going and then inject it into the wood of a tree, it works better. but even that sometimes does not work. i put P populinus plugs in a dying cottonwood tree 1.5 years ago and still nothing,...maybe one day

You can get away with taking some flesh from inside a fresh fruit, preferably near the stem but, transfer that to sterilized supplemented sawdust or spent coffee. Then you can use the chainsaw tek where you cut slits with the saw and pack it with colonized spawn and pour wax over it. Or spawn to plugs and drill and hammer like PsilocyBen17 said.
