Women do not choose science because they are not interested in it. If you don't think that there is a gender difference in what people are interested in you are a drooling moron. How many men do you know have 40 pairs of shoes? There is no male Imelda Marcos
Are you saying that women are less likely to do the hard work and studying necessary to be a player in STEM fields because they are too busy thinking about their shoes? The fact that Thomas Edison is a household name because he got the lightbulb right after trying a thousand times but that Hedy Lamarr is unknown to most people in spite of having laid down the theoretical framework for modern wireless technology tells me that there is something else going on here.
Not at all. I'm just saying they're different than men. Women tend to go into different work areas and it isn't because of systemic bias.
For certain fields (say, construction work) it is fairly obvious why women should be less likely than men to participate, i.e. women are more risk-averse and lack upper body strength. I'm still trying to get at what sort of explanation you can provide for why women are inherently less attracted to working in STEM fields.

Well you kind of gave a hint in your first sentence. Risk averse. There actually are brain differences (My degree is in psych and not bullshit psych) and they are significant. For instance women have more bilateral symmetry for many things than men. The male brain is more compartmentalized than the female brain. A further example involves language. Women's brains are much less often specialized into a left brain Broca's area type routine. Same thing with handedness.

I don't see how those things should impact STEM participation. If anything, the holistic perspective should provide fertile ground for the development of novel hypotheses, and I don't believe there is much risk inherent to developing hypotheses in the academic context.

And yet it has seemed to play out that way through history. By the ay I think you are wrong about the brain organization stuff. I think it's a big deal and crucial to the explanation for why women flock to different fields and have different concerns than men. It is not all societal.

I don't disagree that brain organization is a big deal. The idea that I'm developing through this conversation is that women might be less inclined to obtain a grounding in the sciences, since the different scientific fields are compartmentalized. But if you study different disciplines side by side (chemistry with physics, for example) with a holistic perspective, your understanding of both tends to be greatly enhanced.
Since higher education has traditionally been off-limits to women and therefore these curricula have been established and generally developed by men, I don't think systematic bias has been ruled out. It makes sense that male domination of the natural sciences would take longer to overcome, since their study is more dependent upon compartmentalized lexica than the social sciences.

Dont put words in his mouth. You people who think hes an arsehole are all media spoonfed idiots. You are the reason why the world is so stupid these days. Believe everything you hear without fact checking or listening to the other side of the story.
No where did he say women shouldnt work in the lab. He himself USED to have a problem in the lab with a former female coworker who then because of awkwardness after it ended needed to work somewhere else. He meant this as a joke TOWARDS HIMSELF. He was taking the piss out of himself. Why is it so hard to understand that in any workplace romance can make things go bad. All he did was say the truth but because the media took it out of context in order to make the idiots and idiot feminazis go crazy because THEY KNOW any slight hint of this shit will make the feminazis scream to the heavens about male oppression.

God damn, got a chip on your shoulder or what? I've been a passive and generally disinterested observer of this story until this thread, pardon the fuck out of me for not knowing the specific details. My main interest in it has been as a launchpad for discussing the lack of women in STEM fields.

I agree with the guy. I got hella distracted by my coworker (we are both scientists) cause she was freaking hot like ass totally out of this world. As result I lost interest in my work and now I practically live with her

If you get distracted by females in the workplace something is wrong with you.
Start fapping to fucked up porn on the internet, so a vanilla clothed female no longer gets your rocks off, or get laid more.

I dunno, how many male scientists got into their job because they have a fetish for women in lab coats? Makes ya think.

Smart girls are definitely more attractive.
But to say I can't get my work done because my rock hard dick keeps knocking over beakers is just silly.

And that's why I'm berating the man for being a giant virgin.
Then again men in the STEM fields probably aren't actively getting laid
