Nicotiana Tabacum "Havana" Seedlings
    #21802610 - 06/13/15 01:46 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

Finally sourced/germinated my tobacco seed! Here are about half of my babies.

I've had them in a sunny windowsill for the last week. Today I thinned them all down to 1-2 seedlings per cell & gave them their first feeding of diluted kelp/fish emulsion.

My backyard is terribly compacted clay, gonna have to dig/amend a new bed next to the veggies & transplant these guys outside in a couple weeks. Excited that they're doing well as a super late frost killed all my seedlings last year... Lesson learned.

Anyway, just wanted to post a picture. If any of you guys have grown tobacco before feel free to share your secrets :awesomenod:

Indeed! Funny enough, I actually quit smoking tobacco... currently full-time vaping, and happy keeping it that way. But I'd feel a great sense of accomplishment smoking the occasional bowl/cig of some homegrown organic 'bacco.

Gonna continue giving them a light kelp/fish feeding every week or so until they have a bit of size to 'em. Aside from that I'm just lightly wetting the soil every day/two with a spray bottle.

Main thing to figure out at this point is whether I'll put them in-ground or in containers with potting mix. The neighbours cats come over here and shit/piss in my garden which has been the death of many a tomato plant in the past  Thinking containers might give them a better chance at survival

Any guidance? Tips? They're hardy plants but I'll take any advice I can get!

I've growing some rustica right now actually.

No secrets here though, sorry. I just sowed and kept moist.
I've got some in a pot, and some sowed directly outside...both are going strong.
They're fairly easy grows. I give em a liquid organic fert once a week or so

I've gotta source some seeds and get them growing. I enjoy some good Mapacho from time to time. I heard about something years ago, about the dangers of touching the plants and getting nicotine intoxication, and the need to be careful handling them. This was years ago, so someone can shed some light on that.. not sure if what I read was bs or not. Good luck with your grow!

So say you are vaping now? Those pens? If so, be careful of those. They cause more harm than actually non-vaping:

http://consumer.healthday.com/cancer-information-5/mis-cancer-news-102/high-levels-of-cancer-linked-chemical-in-e-cigarette-vapor-study-finds-695693.html

The e-cig vapes are also endocrine disruptors.

AFAIK it is safe to handle nicotine-containing plants without any fear of accidental ingestion, considering that dry tobacco leaf is safe to handle

It is interesting to note that I had seed planted in coco coir/compost a week+ before the batch I planted in Miracle-Gro. Somehow the MG plants actually germinated first and are all now twice the size of my best coco plant.

Dunno what it is, perhaps the peat-based potting mix just has better qualities regarding texture/water retention because I doubt that the presence of time-released ferts has made much difference this early in the game.

Thank you for posting that! I knew I read something years ago about that. I guess just wear some good gloves and water proof clothes, if you're growing a plant or two at home.

I have about 20 plants atm, probably 12-15 or so this size and a few smaller.

Re-potted them all from the little yogurt containers and seeding trays into plastic beer cups w/ pro-mix organic Veg/Herb mix.

They were a bit dry after being away all weekend... Gave em a fat shot of fish/kelp

They seem pretty happy

How old are those?

When I grew tobacco (N. tabacum) outside they grew very quick, but I have some growing in small pots now that need to be thinned/transplanted.  They're in fox farms ocean forest soil, which I must say worked great in the past for cannabis, but seems to have slowed these seedlings down.

First pic is 15 days ago, second pic is today.

Most broke through the first week of June, making them roughly.. 3+ weeks old??

Growth was slow initially but has really taken off. As mentioned, the ones I started in coco are currently much flimsier than the handful I started in Miracle Grow. I usually prefer to go the organic route but I ran out of soil and got some MG for free, and damn. The MG plants are slaying my organic coco plants

They're all in Pro-Mix atm and I'm gonna keep hitting them with the liquid organics on a weekly-ish basis and see where it gets me.

Thats a good fertilizer keep using that
I used kelp extract, fish emulsion, and worm castings on my tobacco and had phenomenal results. Give em tons of light and lots of root space.

Have fun!

Been letting the soil dry for 2-3 days and watering fairly sparingly. Going to feed again next watering. Thinking these are probably ready to transplant outside next week.

Gotcha, I have been wary of waiting to do transplants recently since this spring I apparently waited too long to put my peppers outside and they started getting rootbound and some of them stunted...

Show us how they look when you put em outside

Will do :awesomenod: I won't let them get to the point of full-on root bound

My banana peppers are looking sad this year :frown: They stopped growing competely upon going outdoors. They're flowering now but they're not going to yield anything to write home about. Might have gone out too early. Spring in Canada is ruthless sometimes

My tomatoes are doing.. alright :p

I'll post some pics of the rest of my garden

Scavenged a bunch of mismatched pots & transplanted them. If they really take off I'll have to upgrade to 5 gal buckets down the road. But potting mix is expensive... and I'm cheap

10 in pots, 5 in the herb garden.

Check it.

What should I do from here? Just leave it to air cure for a long ass time?

Seriously though, are they stronger in terms of Nicotine content than a Cigarette? (in the UK the maximum is 1mg of Nicotine per pre-rolled normal size cigarette which is .5g i think) also did you get a picture of them before you took the leaf off?

I've never done it personally, but it seems that a 'cure' would be in order as well as drying. Curing is what gives flavor and removes the harshness of the smoke. Basically, some of the sugars in the plant ferment or something to enhance the flavor. Without a cure, it will likely be harsh and not too tasty...

Like I said, I've never done it myself, but you might wanna look into curing tobacco. But even without a cure, yes you can go ahead and smoke it.

I got hasty with mine, just dried in a dehydrator and smoked.
Very, very harsh. I'm not a cigarette or tobacco smoker in general but I really enjoyed this stuff, real nice buzz effect.

I hung mine in an old fashioned shitter "or out house". It wasn't harsh by any means but it also wasn't nearly as strong as a store bought cig.

AFAIK tabacum is the standard for cigarette tobacco

The plants these leaves came off are actually still going strong and have many times more leaf yet to be picked.

1234 did the leaf dry green?? A slower dry time allows chlorophyll to leave the leaf & dry yellow/brown which i believe plays a role in how enjoyable the resulting smoke is.

I'm in no rush really, I quit cigs a while ago mainly just wanted to do this for the novelty and because I never had before.

spaceman -

Which tobacco were you growing?
I'm referring to Rustica in my posts, I hear it's particularly strong & potent.
It was definitely better and more potent than any tobacco I've ever smoked.

CannAbyss -

Yeah like I said, I got impatient and kinda "flash dried" them. It dried green, yes.
I did it on a low temp in the oven once, but in a food dehydrator most of the time.

Yea  was referring to Havana there but I have had some seeds that I got in trade and they actually were rustica "of some kind" seeds but the plants really weren't that strong. I was sad but I've got some Rustica hopi indian tobacco I've been growing a bit of that I already know is good.

Do you mean the plants weren't strong, as in the smoke was weak? Or that the plants themselves didn't GROW strongly?
Asking because when I've planted the Rustica, they seem to flower and go to seed really fast.
Never growing very big at all, maybe it's due to the conditions I had them in, :justdontknow:

Yea rustica don't grow real big and can be thrown into flowering very early.

I was talking about the potency was weak as compared to the rustica I'm growing now.

Gotcha. To be honest, I didn't really know there were different varieties of Rustica.

I guess they would be sub species / sub genus? I'm not too good with my terminology.

I really didn't either until I tried these new plants.

There's a big potency difference between different seed types it seems.
