Still a Noob!!!!!!! Urgh!
    #21802120 - 06/13/15 11:07 AM (8 years, 7 months ago)

I dont know how to spell mycellium so sorry for that.  However, watching it grow is beautiful, when my jars dont get contaminated.  It's like watching string grow on its own.  I am completely fascinated with the process and I haven't even got to do them yet.  I'm on week two with the BRF cake method.  Alot of people have thrown out terms I dont understand like:  Agar and alot of abbreviations that just blow me away and wish I knew what they were talking about.  I guess that will come in time.  But it is completely beautimous, except for the ones that have turned pink and green.  Urgh, now up to seven jar contaminations, makes me sick.  I worked really hard to follow the video to a "T".

That's the hardest part of growing cubes if you're on a low budget. Don't take risks. (i.e: not re-sterilizing the ringe each time) growing cubes is too delicate.

What? I've successfully grown cubes on a 50$ budget.
It is all about sterilization, if you get that down the cubes will practically grow themselves.

I agree though, if 7 Jars got contam then you fucked something up in the tek.

 Cubes are almost the easiest mushrooms to grow. The only easier ones is Oyster Mushrooms and You could probably get them to colonize jars made of verm and used cat litter.

I meant cubes are delicate compared to "edibles", I don't think he's growing exquisites. :ooo: I like cubes

The one with the two dudes one narrates the other does the demonstration. They used jar lids in the sterilization of the jars. The how to video.

A pressure cooker is the best investment regardless of growing mushrooms. The electricity and time you save from using it to cook alone makes it worth the purchase. With the use of a PC you would have to be a REALLY dirty pig to get a contamination.

So a blackhawks fan? :rofl2:

On a serious note OP, I dropped wild Cubie Spores directly into cow manure and got them to fruit. Didn't even syringe them in. Not much, but grew enough to trip.

I was gonna link it but I'm lazy and the project died so I don't give two fucks.

The seven jars that are messed up I believe is because #1 I over inoculated them.  #2 one of the jars cracks and I inoculated anyway and for the first few jars I inoculated I forgot to flame sterilize the needle.  I think the cracked jar was contaminated due to it being cracked.  If I lose the rest of my jars I'm going to come unglued from the seems.  Thats a fact Jack.

I'll post pics of the jars later when I have more time. (I have a pic in my pictures) hang on.  First I want to make clear I am a stay at home house-wife and all I do is clean, so by no means am I filthy by any stretch of the imagination. Second had an experienced shroomer with me that had great successes prior to this one.  She told me what to do plus I added different things from the video like:  rubber side up.  I taught her one thing.  :crazy2:

Process I followed:

1.  Washed my jars thoroughly with dish soap and bleach. (with scalding hot water).

2.  Rinsed, (with scalding hot water), and dried then turned them upside down on a freshly cleaned towel, so nothing could get in them.

3.  Cleaned a large container with lid with same procedure as in #1.  I used a coffee grinder and set it to fine and ground up a 5 lb. bag of brown rice flower.

4.  I made 26 jars so I mixed up 4 cups of verm and 2 cups of water and mixed that together very well and then added 2 cups of BRF. Repeated once with a double recipe and then did a regular batch.

5.  Filled the mixture in the jars leaving about a half inch to an inch of free space. (I think they were filled to the bottom line where the lid sits).  That was our gaugeiment.

6.  Then I wiped the excess off of where I would place the dry verm to make sure it was contaminate free in the void space.

7.  Then I added dry verm to the very top of the jar and put the round thing rubber side up, then added the microbial tape over the inoculation points/holes and screwed the lids on and the final prep before sterilization was to place foil over the tops of the jars.

8.  Found a steamer bottom and placed it about three inches from the bottom.  A steamer bottom is old and you cant find them anymore, you can but they're not worth a shit.  Its used to steam vegetables. (Steam bottoms are large disks with alot of holes with a little hook in the middle to grab a hold of it to pull it out).  I was excited because I've had them over 20 years and never had a use for them until now.  Woo Hoooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!

9.  I put about three inches of water in a huge pot put on the steamer disc brought to a boil, placed jars around 12 or 14 of them, I cant remember how many, (that was two weeks ago).  Set my timer for 30 minutes to check on the water level  added if needed. Repeated for 90 minutes.

10.  The second set I did the same thing except there were not as many jars in this batch.

11.  I let them cool over night.

12.  Next day I made my inoculation chamber, cleaned it out with alcohol and let dry, (same to the lid).

13.  Turned off the A/C and made sure there was no fans running in the adjacent living space.

14.  I had on a mask, my glasses and latex gloves, (covered in alcohol) and a long sleep shirt, as I didn't have medical sleeves as shown in the video.

15.  I soaked a paper towel with alcohol and placed it in the inoculation chamber and got my spores from refrigerator and shook them up very well.  (Should have wiped those down with alcohol too, but did in the batch of Rotan Thailand that I started afterwards, (only 5 jars of that and still have solution left because I have 2 Lizard Kings and about half of the RT left.

16.  I put all of the jars in the inoculation chamber, (this is where I screwed up for several jars, maybe even 7, hopefully), I had a lighter and flame sterilized it, the first jar I picked up was the cracked one and I inoculated it anyway and for the first several jars I forgot to re sterilize the needle. :mad2:  There was nothing that I could do, except correct the mistake, so I kept going sterilizing between each jar.

17.  I first put the jars in the kitchen cabinet and later I noticed it was too cool.

18.  Moved the jars to a warmer place, which is a old linen closet that is converted into an office.  I placed the jars on the top shelf, because heat rises.

19.  Then I added a small electric heater and am turning it on about 3 times a day for about 5 minutes each time to get the room temp up to around about 80 degrees.

NOTE:
The ones that became contaminated were the ones that I put a shitload of solution in, because I didnt know how to read the syringe and the video really didnt say, those are pink and then just out of the blue only one came up green, (which I believe that what ever contaminate got in the cracked jar transferred to the one that turned green).  Again I am new here so I am only speculating.
