Curious about why to avoid spore explosions!

I've seen a lot of posts in regards to harvesting before the mushroom disperses it's spores.
I'm curious as to whether or not this would actually cause issues. What issues could arise from this?

Besides a complete and utter mess you have to clean up and having the spores all over the fruits you're consuming making them taste much worse?

Spores taste bad.
I've heard that spores on the surface of the substrate is a signal to the mycelium that it is time to stop fruiting.
Those are the main 2 off the top of my head.

That's kind of what I was thinking. But aren't the spores already present in the mushroom? I would assume you're consuming them anyways.
I would assume the spores could possibly germinate. Although the nutrition of the bulk or cake would eventually run low, I suppose they could grow if used cakes were 'planted' outside.

I've also heard this quite a bit too. That the gasses released from the spores partially inhibits later flushes.
Not totally sure how true this is tho.

Mushrooms also stop putting on potency just before the veil breaks and spores drop so in order to ensure that you don't have any "extra" weight , you pick before the spores drop. And as mentioned before by other members-spores are dirty.
One friend of mine thought spores contain psilocybin and wanted closed cap mushrooms just so he can eat a spore explosion.

All you have to do is harvest a tub a day or two late and you will know why it is important to pick before the spores drop. It's no just a light dusting of spores. It looks like a black snow storm hit covering everything with a thick layer of spores. I just throw the whole sub in the trash at that point.

I've licked the tops of some heavily spored caps. Not sure what the big deal, taste wise, is? That said, though I often have to harvest twice a day, from multiple mono's, I do my best to stay ahead of any major spore drops. And, when it does happen, I gently wipe the caps of all but the little ones, with a dampened paper towel. They just look so much prettier, clean, with some hymen.... , I mean veil, attached...

Mad Season said: Everyone says it drops potency but no one's ever been able to show proof. I think it's just a plain old lie that someone made up. I remember when I believed that and had a 3 gram cap open mushroom thinking it'd be like 2-2.5 grams. It was more like 4 grams of aborts it raped me so bad lol. Genetics and mindset. I haven't even found a difference between aborts and full grown mushrooms.. maybe .5 gram difference. Personally I think mycelium is mycelium. It's more dependant on genetics.
I've had tons open up and I don't think the message sending is what happens imo. The substrate shrinks because it's losing hydration. It shrinks more as it pushes more into the mushrooms, it takes an extra day or so for them to open up, and that's a whole day of extra hydration getting pushed out. That's my theory as to why it could be worse pinsets for later flushes. Keeping hydration up with misting is how I get around it.
Also as for the substrate it does look black and gross afterwards lol nothing you can do, but as for the mushrooms themselves I just use cleaning up a sporesplosion

So it's mostly an aesthetic thing. I get that ha ha.
I figured there wouldn't be much of a functional problem. I didn't exactly do this or plan on doing it. I just wondered what could come of spore explosions.

No, it's not just an aesthetic thing.
Many have speculated based on experience that spores dropping on the substrate triggers a response that tells the mycelium it's done producing mushrooms and has completed its life cycle. I've still had some mushrooms come up after a major spore drop but not many.
And yeah, they do taste bad, and it's worse when they're all over the surface than when they're efffectively locked in the gills.
