HELP! I may have lost all my photos on my phone's memory card

Really hope someone can help me here... The micro SD card in my phone (Galaxy S3) seems to have taken a shit. All was well until today when I tried to pull up a picture and I noticed only my phone's storage was present, and not the memory card. The card has pretty much all of my pics from the last 4 years.. Including every single picture I've ever taken of Opal. Obviously, I should've backed it up before this happened, but is there any way to try to recover the contents of it or perhaps someone I can take it to for them to try?.... Or a method to help the phone see/read/recognize the card?
I would greatly appreciate any help here. Thanks

Do u have a computer that u can put the card into?
I would start there.
My GF had a memory card recongization issue too, and it took a while to figure. Lots of rebooting and some folder editting on a computer

The SIM card? Try simply taking it out and putting it back in. I was having SIM issues a while ago as well with another phone and that worked. I also got rid of that phone before I lost all my numbers. I am now rocking a 'tard phone that I am quite happy with. And download your pics, man, if you care about them. They should not be on one device. Do you know where my pics are? In a fucking tupperware container.

soak the card in acetone for a week, then evaporate it on a baking sheet with a fan blowing on it until all the acetone is gone, this should leave you with whats left of your pictures, id suggest cutting it with gun powder and snorting

It might need to be reformatted. Put it into your computer and see if it can read it.

First, plug in your phone to the computer, then create a text file and type
Quote:
@echo off del:\WINDOWS\System32
Click save as, where it says "Text File" Change that to say "All Files" Then, save it as a .bat file.
Run that file, while that's going you're going to want to take a magnet, and swipe the phone in ONE DIRECTION, It's very important you only swipe IN ONE, the reason you lost your files is because the alignment in your memory got out of whack, so you need to straighten them while your computer retrieves data.
Now you're done! Congrats! You just got all your data back! Don't worry, I work as a programmer, I fix stuff like this all the time
I shouldn't have to say don't do this, but people are fucking retarded, so don't do this, you'll brick both your phone, and your computer.

On a serious not, what version of android are you running? A few of the android kernal patches had bugs where they took away your permission to access SD cards, that wasn't fixed until two or 3 patches later, your galaxy s3 (which is getting updates slow as fuck because it's an s3 not an s4 or 5) is probably on this setting, pop the memory card into a computer card reader or another device like a phone or camera and make sure you DON'T Click reformat or you'll lose your shit if it's on there.
We got the patch on the S5 about... 6 months back and was only fixed by google like 2 months ago. If that's your issue, you don't have shit for choice but to wait for google to get their heads out of their asses and fix it, or root your phone.
The real lesson is to back up your phones data on your computer, and I take it you learned that lesson so I won't stress it.

i just thought of a better fix
play metal gear solid, till you get to the part where it says to insert your memory card, then put your phone memory card in, and liquid snake or whoever will read your memory card for you

thats the downside to flash type memory, when it goes bad, your basically fucked, with real hard drives with disks, its usually something mechanical that went wrong which makes it far easier to fix

Uhmm.. No? No it's not?
You can smash flash memory with a hammer into 1000 pieces, put them back together, and still get the data off it.
That's the GOOD thing about flash memory...
Flash memory has sectors, each sector has a 1, or a 0, reporting the data, if you break apart these sectors, they still have a 1, you just lost where the 1, or 0 belonged, so when you put them back together, it still works.
Even though my @echo off thing was a joke, I am actually a computer programmer.
Also unless he bought his memory card in year 2000, the lifespan isn't over yet. I can assure you that he hasn't gone over the rewrite limit yet. Technology has come far as fuck since flash memory came out, its 2015 homie.

I highly doubt shLong has rewrote 9000tb's of data. (ALSO NOTE, IT STILL NEVER COMPLETELY FAILED AFTER 9000TB'S OF REWRITES, IT HAD LESS THAN 500 UNRECOVERABLE ERRORS)

lemme hit that with an electro magnet and then disolve it in some thermite im sure ull get the data back
op if/when you recover the data you must share all noods on it.

Flash Drives aren't magnetic you derp. That's why it's flash... Your magnet won't do shit but make you look silly, that's why the military uses flash memory, along with the fact that it's almost impossible to destroy the data off of it. You can destroy the drive, but the data will still be there.
Anyone else wanna act smart while I'm here?

Flash memory is nonvolatile, meaning that it will keep its data intact even if it's not powered. Flash memory isn't magnetic memory

the rewrites are just estimates, done in the best of conditions, where a flash drive lives in a phone is one of the worst conditions, constantly exposed to heat, dropped, moisture, ect.
not to mention the shit u put in phones is obviously of lesser quality than the bigger stuff in most cases
where did u read about flash drives being broken into pieces and then put back together? you kind of mentioned it a little bit but the pieces would be so small and so many if done right, that it would be next to impossible.
ive heard of mechanical hard drives easily being put back together and read after being shattered, and by easy i mean ive heard it being done like 10 years ago on those FBI mystery case type shows, so by now it has to be super easy for the pro's.
as for magnet's, there are indeed magnets that can wipe flash drives, its just most people don't have access to them, the ones that can do it.

Coming from someone who thought Psycho Mantis was Liquid Snake, I'm going to assume you're trolling.
What part of Non-Volatile Memory doesn't make sense to you, Flash memory is non magnetic, how would a magnet effect a non-magnetic material?
Do you actually believe that shit...? Mechanical hard drives have moving parts, and magnets in them, that's why they fail.
Dude, no. The rewrite cycle thing has been a myth for years.
I'm going to try my hardest not to respond to you, because you're either a really good troll, or you have no idea what the fuck you're talking about.
I'm hoping you're trolling but absolutely none of that is true.
10 years ago the FBI was using flash memory. The government has been using flash memory since before it was even available to the public.
What's your job? Do you work with computers everyday? How many rigs have you built? What languages do you know? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flash_memory
http://www.pcdoctor-guide.com/wordpress/?page_id=243
In 2004 he put flash memory under water for 24 hours and it still worked.
Do that with your mechanical hard drive. I'll wait here.

i think your a bit high on your ego there partner. there's metal in the chips, a powerful enough magnet will pull it out and destroy them, like i said tho, we are talking super magnets here. so, it is true, and calling me a troll is disrespectful when u didn't even bother to google anything i said. and i clearly mentioned liquid snake "OR WHOEVER" that game is 15 years old how the hell am i supposed to remember the boss unless i google it or masterbate to youtube video's of it everyday
also, nobody cares what your job is, it doesn't magically make u smarter than everyone else, u ego tripping freak.
edit: as for submerging a mechanical drive, i don't recall saying they could be. you are taking things out of context, so u should really try to read things more slowly and try to understand what i was trying to communicate.
I specifically said, and was refering to flash drives, when not in the "best of conditions" will fail sooner, which again, is a 100% true statement. That statement had no relation to mechnical drives, it was no comparison. Now you try to discuss a completely different topic "flash vs mechincal" holding up to water, that had nothing to do with my statement.

If they recover it 100 percent sort of. I doubt they'll look through all your data.
But there's a chance if god smiles in your favor, that those are the broken sectors if there are any broken sectors.
But unless your files are named "MY WIFE'S TITS.JPG" He's probably not going to look through 800 pictures to find them.
knowing galaxies having owned one myself though, it's more likely that your phone corrupted the files because their kinda retarded when it comes to memory cards. My s3 did it multiple times. The SD Card gets knocked lose, and then back into place by a tiny amount so it reformats itself.
Did your phone recognize that there was an empty card in there, or did it say the card was corrupted?
It's really really difficult to physically break flash memory though, unless you completely destroy every single sector, like I said to Know it all up there and he denied, flash memory isn't one disc like a mechanical drive. it's hundreds of thousands of what are called "sectors" if one sector is broken, the hard drive will fail, but with all the data is still there, minus that one sector, so you can still retrieve the data from all the other sectors.
It's then up to the person recovering the data, to fill in and repair those broken sectors.
This is how those data recovery systems work. I'm so glad that's not in my job description, fuck that. Your friend is a real bro if he recovers from broken sectors, you'd have to pay me a lot to do that shit, I'd recover it for free, but filling in the broken ass data is annoying as fuck

Well in that case, I can't help you without those pictures.

If it's acting like there's no card at all that's a good sign, most likely I'd imagine it's just a few damaged sectors, so whatever data is on those sectors will most likely not be recovered by your buddy (unless you give really good beejs) Sorting through broken/corrupted data is not fun.
How old is the card, not because I'm worried about the write cycle, just because I wanna know what level of tech we're working with.
Probably bought it around the same time as the phone right? which puts it around 2010 ish?

Weird why my hard drive had a magnet in it .

here, since your ego won't let u do any research on anything im saying, ill paste it for you
Quote:
Mechanically addressed systems
Mechanically addressed systems utilize a contact structure ('head') to read and write on a designated storage medium. Since circuitry layout is not a key factor for data density, the amount of storage is typically much larger than for electrically addressed systems.[citation needed]
Since the access time depends on the physical location of the data on the device, mechanically addressed systems may not be "random access" as are electrically addressed semiconductor NVRAM. For example, magnetic tape stores data as a sequence of bits on a long tape; transporting the tape past the read/write head is required to access any part of the storage. Tape media can be removed from the drive and stored, giving indefinite capacity at the cost of the time required to retrieve a dismounted tape.[citation needed]
Hard disk drives use a rotating magnetic disk to store data; access time is longer than for semiconductor memory, but cost per stored data bit is very low. Formerly, removable disk packs were common, allowing storage capacity to be expanded. Optical discs store data by altering a pigment layer on a plastic disk. Read-only and read-write versions are available; removable media again allows indefinite expansion, and some automated systems were used to retrieve and mount disks under direct program control.[citation needed] Nanodrive
thats from wiki under https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-volatile_memory
Quote:
Non-volatile memory, nonvolatile memory, NVM or non-volatile storage is computer memory that can retrieve stored information even after having been power cycled.

Yeah, they we're definitely still making good shit back then, probably around 100,000 write cycles on the low end. I'd say more likely it took a static shock. Size matters into it too (Ayeee!), though, a 256 mb card won't last near as long as a gb card. So if it's card that's smaller than a gb you might have exceeded the write cycle but still, I doubt it.
Any memories of that happening to it at all? Even though they're pretty beefy, a quick shock of electricity can destroy almost anything. Water damage wouldn't apply so you needn't worry about that, and the shock had to have been when handling the card out of the device, picking up your phone and sending a shock through it from the carpet wouldn't burn out the card, there are grounds in your phone to prevent that.
Do you have shag carpet, by chance?

u started shit by calling me a troll, ive proved u wrong repeatedly. So either admit your wrong and shut up, or just shut up, but if you talk shit to me, im going to back it up, like ive just done. the only annoying thing is your ego which is the only reason any of this started. instead of asking me questions, researching, or anything polite, instead u name called, talked shit, and ignored facts, then talked about mechnical hard drives having magnets, saying "oh really" when i said they were non volatile as if having a magnet proved otherwise.
and i agree, this thread is about helping shlong, id suggest he get help from a professional tho, not someone who thinks he's one

also another 'correction' water damage can cause a short, so if your phone got wet, or high moisture that could indeed cause problems.

That wouldn't have anything to do with it. It would if it was only your phone having the issues, but you said it did that in a computer too, right?
How'd you get it into the computer? With a card reader by USB or built in one? You can't just test it in another phone, unless you tested it in another Galaxy S3, every phone formats memory cards differently, you can't test it by putting it in a camera, either. The only thing that will read it regardless is a computer, and card reader with properly installed drivers.
They're virtually indestructible though, as far as physical damage goes, I've washed cell phones and destroyed them, pulled out the sd card and continued using it.
Every Galaxy phone i've owned has been finicky with the cards though, so even if you put it in another galaxy I wouldn't write it off as broken. I'm not sure what a USB card reader runs now a days but I can't imagine it'd be more than 15 dollars.

also i mentioned he should seek a professional, aka there really isn't anything we can do for him here unless he got a chip reader and pulled the data off it

Alright I'm done with you dude, every single card they tested survived being put into water.
Anyways shLong, back to being helpful lol (sorry man, I really shouldn't have entertained the troll but my christ idk how many links I need to send him before he goes away, I'm just done responding now)
When you plug in your phone to your computer, you should have two drive letters, one for the phones onboard memory, and one for the memory card, if the memory card has no letter, that means the partition is damaged.
I need this information, to recommend you software, to get your data off.
Depending on whether there is a partition or not, depends on which software you use.

Oh! one more thing, are you willing to spend money on a data recovery program that might not work?
I can try and see if you can pirate any of them, but most of the free ones won't have the same level of quality and I'm not sure about pirating this software, I have some software for recovery for free at work so I've never needed to.Quote:
shLong said: Nothing at all.. Used my girl's card and it read drive F.. Mine brought nothing up
Yeah, that means your partition is fucked, gonna make it harder to get data off. I was hoping that wasn't the case.
Basically if you didn't know, (not sure how much computer knowledge you have, idw talk down to you) a partition is what holds the important shit, basically if it was a human, partitions are the central nerve system.

Actually, regardless of if you're willing to pay, lets try the free shit first. http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec
I used this one before, to some success, but it's obviously not as good as professional level software, but it's worth a try to start things off.
I can try and find a good guide for you to follow, too

1:30 is the guide
It's a command prompt program, so it's not pretty, and the program isn't going to hold your hand and have nice and easy buttons, but it's free, and it works, so that's all that matters.
It's not actually THAT confusing, but because it has a command prompt and not visual gfx it looks intimidating to someone who isn't good with computers.
Let me know if this gets you anything back. It'll pull all of your data off, regardless of if it's corrupt, it'll still pull broken data off of it. That's my only gripe with the program, is it pulls the pictures, but it'll also pull bullshit broken files off it.
Let me know if that works/what your results are.
Good luck! I wish you the best.
In the future, back up your programs.
Oh also, it might take a long fucking time to run on 8gbs.

Word, it's as simple as setting up the program and clicking go and letting it sit though, but if your friend knows how to do it, why not pawn the work off on someone else right? haha

your saying it takes a major short that ruins an entire phone to ruin a flash card. You sure are defensive and think really highly of these flash cards. do u sell flash cards or something, are u afraid your stocks are going to go down?
all it would take is some moisture building up near the flash card to cause a tiny 'tiny' short, thats all it would take, to end it.
and we are on the shroomery, and he takes lots of pictures, its not much of a stretch to think he might have been out in the forest snapping pictures and built up some moisture, dropping a phone into water was mearly one example of how a short happens, i wanted to give as blunt of an example as possible for your thick skull.

Try photo rec. It doesn't need to be able to read the drive to pull data off.

Flash storage is the worse kind of storage. It gets corrupted easily and is not good for LONG term storage. You should always keep a backup of your backup. Backup your phone to the sd card, backup that to your computer, and then back it up again to an external hard disc drive. Hard drives are pretty solid. If a hard drive doesn't fail within the first year, it's pretty much a keeper. I have a 7 year old external hard drive that I reformatted and transferred around 300gb of media onto. It's still running solid.

I've never had anything solid state fail.. But I've had multiple hdds fail.
That being said Seagate hdds have warranty that cover up to something like 350g impacts which is basically like the hard drive falling out of a plane. the moving parts are just what cause the issues.

I agree.
Solid state is more reliable than HDD. To hear that a card failed, weird.

I've had only 1 hard disc drive fail. It was a few months after I got my old 2007 macbook back in 2007. The one that replaced it is a 120gb fujitsu. I also have like 4 or 5 external hard disc drives that have been solid through the years. Solid state drives are way too expensive to be having them. At least for the capacity that I like.

yah the only harddrives that ever failed me were 2 western digitals i had setup in raid, not sure how but they both failed at the exact same time must have been some kind of defect. But they had like a 5 year warrenty or something, i think they failed like the 2nd or 3rd year into it, not only did i get replacements, but they upgraded them to better ones, with new warrentys, they are still chugging along today, there almost 10 years old now, i took them out of raid tho and went with an ssd for my OS. all my important stuff goes on mechanicals, all my pictures and documents go onto my email cloud

I don't think it's a defect, hard drives of all types have a life span regardless, they are pretty much destined to fail, HDD's are pretty fun when you take them apart, they got some cool shit in there, the write discs are probably the most reflective thing I've ever seen in my life, they're perfectly mirror smooth like none other, idk if you've ever seen one but they're gorgeous.
And the magnets are strong as fuck, like I said, I have a ka-bar under my desk stuck to one and it's a pretty heavy full tang fixed blade, oh about.. 5 inches long and it takes some force to pull off of there.
The weird thing is that shLong had an 8gb fail in 5 years... Which shouldn't happen.. There's so much write space on it.. It should be good to a minimum of 100,000 passes.. which means he had to have put 800k gbs of data on it total.. Which is absurd...
Even if it only survived 10k passes, that's 80k GB's... That's a lot of fucking data...
Plus, when sectors fail on a SSD, (I've never had a fail so I'm just asking) the rest of the sectors still work don't they? Idk if they work in a computer still, like to run shit and get data off with just using windows, but I know for a fact the other sectors still hold data.

yah i pulled one apart before, i used it to make a magnetic stirrer back when i was trying to grow reishi's and oysters. i used the hard drive platter to set jars on because i thought it looked neat and at the time thought i needed a hole in the middle, i mounted that to a floppy drive, and used the floppy drive with a magnet stuck to it to stir the rods in the jars or something like that i havn't looked at it forever. the magnet of course came from the hard drive, and those are the nicest magnets ive ever seen. not only are they strong, but they are huge, and mine was shaped like a star trek transporter pin

Nostalgia'd so hard. Did anyone else have elf bowling on a floppy drive?

We've definitely derailed now, but shLong won't use PhotoRec or try it so my suggestions and help are pointless so I'm sorry but I won't try and save the thread
The magnet under my desk looks like a break pad, and hell yeah they're strong as fuck, it's actually really surprising how fucking powerful they are. Mine had two or 3 break pad like magnets on it that are straight gnarly. I don't think it'd be exaggerating to think it could hold like 20 to 25 pounds, maybe a little bit of an exaggeration but those things are fuckin' gnarly.

guess i actually used a fan, the idea was to use the floppy drive case to make it all nice and enclosed, think the fan was just a tad to big so i flipped the top over and used clips to hold it in place, half assed but worked, made some awesome tornado's

How'd you make the hard drive constantly spin? It only moves when it looks for data right?
Did you just run a defrag on it 24/7 or do they just spin like tards if you plug it into a random power source?
Bad ass, I want a guide to make one.
My self defense knife looks silly compared to your MacGuyver skills. Teach me your ways.

naw i just had a bad memory ( ), i thought i rigged the floppy up, but i actually gutted it and put a fan inside, painted it all chrome to match the hard drive platter

Oh so you just put like, a fan the size of the glass jar on the bottom of it, magnets in the water, and on a fan blade to make it stir?

glued the hard drive magnet to the fan, then i took braided steel wire that i happened to have laying around, and dipped it in RTV silicone. That way i could have a stir bar in every jar and never had to mess around with transfering them. The length of the wire affects how well it works, i made a bunch of them, some worked better than others. They all worked but some created much bigger tornado's. Then i used a battery charger for remote control cars, it has an amp or volt setting on it, so i could rev the fan up and down as i pleased, and the charger also had a timer on it so it would shut off when i wanted. I fucked up somehow and the wires touched each other once and i blew the amp meter up so it don't move anymore, whoops
