Flash storage is the worse kind of storage. It gets corrupted easily and is not good for LONG term storage. You should always keep a backup of your backup. Backup your phone to the sd card, backup that to your computer, and then back it up again to an external hard disc drive. Hard drives are pretty solid. If a hard drive doesn't fail within the first year, it's pretty much a keeper. I have a 7 year old external hard drive that I reformatted and transferred around 300gb of media onto. It's still running solid.

I've never had anything solid state fail.. But I've had multiple hdds fail.
That being said Seagate hdds have warranty that cover up to something like 350g impacts which is basically like the hard drive falling out of a plane. the moving parts are just what cause the issues.

I agree.
Solid state is more reliable than HDD. To hear that a card failed, weird.

I've had only 1 hard disc drive fail. It was a few months after I got my old 2007 macbook back in 2007. The one that replaced it is a 120gb fujitsu. I also have like 4 or 5 external hard disc drives that have been solid through the years. Solid state drives are way too expensive to be having them. At least for the capacity that I like.

yah the only harddrives that ever failed me were 2 western digitals i had setup in raid, not sure how but they both failed at the exact same time must have been some kind of defect. But they had like a 5 year warrenty or something, i think they failed like the 2nd or 3rd year into it, not only did i get replacements, but they upgraded them to better ones, with new warrentys, they are still chugging along today, there almost 10 years old now, i took them out of raid tho and went with an ssd for my OS. all my important stuff goes on mechanicals, all my pictures and documents go onto my email cloud

I don't think it's a defect, hard drives of all types have a life span regardless, they are pretty much destined to fail, HDD's are pretty fun when you take them apart, they got some cool shit in there, the write discs are probably the most reflective thing I've ever seen in my life, they're perfectly mirror smooth like none other, idk if you've ever seen one but they're gorgeous.
And the magnets are strong as fuck, like I said, I have a ka-bar under my desk stuck to one and it's a pretty heavy full tang fixed blade, oh about.. 5 inches long and it takes some force to pull off of there.
The weird thing is that shLong had an 8gb fail in 5 years... Which shouldn't happen.. There's so much write space on it.. It should be good to a minimum of 100,000 passes.. which means he had to have put 800k gbs of data on it total.. Which is absurd...
Even if it only survived 10k passes, that's 80k GB's... That's a lot of fucking data...
Plus, when sectors fail on a SSD, (I've never had a fail so I'm just asking) the rest of the sectors still work don't they? Idk if they work in a computer still, like to run shit and get data off with just using windows, but I know for a fact the other sectors still hold data.

yah i pulled one apart before, i used it to make a magnetic stirrer back when i was trying to grow reishi's and oysters. i used the hard drive platter to set jars on because i thought it looked neat and at the time thought i needed a hole in the middle, i mounted that to a floppy drive, and used the floppy drive with a magnet stuck to it to stir the rods in the jars or something like that i havn't looked at it forever. the magnet of course came from the hard drive, and those are the nicest magnets ive ever seen. not only are they strong, but they are huge, and mine was shaped like a star trek transporter pin

Nostalgia'd so hard. Did anyone else have elf bowling on a floppy drive?

We've definitely derailed now, but shLong won't use PhotoRec or try it so my suggestions and help are pointless so I'm sorry but I won't try and save the thread
The magnet under my desk looks like a break pad, and hell yeah they're strong as fuck, it's actually really surprising how fucking powerful they are. Mine had two or 3 break pad like magnets on it that are straight gnarly. I don't think it'd be exaggerating to think it could hold like 20 to 25 pounds, maybe a little bit of an exaggeration but those things are fuckin' gnarly.

guess i actually used a fan, the idea was to use the floppy drive case to make it all nice and enclosed, think the fan was just a tad to big so i flipped the top over and used clips to hold it in place, half assed but worked, made some awesome tornado's

How'd you make the hard drive constantly spin? It only moves when it looks for data right?
Did you just run a defrag on it 24/7 or do they just spin like tards if you plug it into a random power source?
Bad ass, I want a guide to make one.
My self defense knife looks silly compared to your MacGuyver skills. Teach me your ways.

naw i just had a bad memory ( ), i thought i rigged the floppy up, but i actually gutted it and put a fan inside, painted it all chrome to match the hard drive platter

Oh so you just put like, a fan the size of the glass jar on the bottom of it, magnets in the water, and on a fan blade to make it stir?

glued the hard drive magnet to the fan, then i took braided steel wire that i happened to have laying around, and dipped it in RTV silicone. That way i could have a stir bar in every jar and never had to mess around with transfering them. The length of the wire affects how well it works, i made a bunch of them, some worked better than others. They all worked but some created much bigger tornado's. Then i used a battery charger for remote control cars, it has an amp or volt setting on it, so i could rev the fan up and down as i pleased, and the charger also had a timer on it so it would shut off when i wanted. I fucked up somehow and the wires touched each other once and i blew the amp meter up so it don't move anymore, whoops
