Online Philosophy Class Providing Laughs
    #21796477 - 06/12/15 08:56 AM (8 years, 7 months ago)

So I just started taking this online Philosophy 101 class. It is technically for my girlfriend who needs this last silly gen ed to get her diploma.  But, I have always enjoyed philosophy and have never taken an actual course on it, so I told her I would just do everything for her (free 6 pack every week, worth it ha).  I have a feeling this is going to be a very fun class, especially with the online 'discussion' we have to participate in for points.

THe first discussion topic is "What are some of your current beliefs and have these beliefs evolved in anyway since you were a child?  How do your beliefs differ, if at all, from those of your parents?  Why the change, if any?"

Holy canolli, literally every single post before mine, and there are 9 of them, mentions something about believing in Jesus and God.  And how they believe they will be saved and go to heaven if they trust and have faith in God, etc.  It's as if this was a class on religion/christianity/Catholics.

I felt like stirring things up a bit, so my post said I believed that life after death was the same as life before birth. My other 'belief' was that there is no thing/action in this world that is inherently good or bad.  There are things and actions.  And then there is our perspective on those things.  But, because we deem something good or bad (right or wrong) does not make it so.

This should make for an entertaining couple months.

Do you actually believe that our actions aren't really right or wrong? This is a concept I have thought a lot about while tripping and I seem to think that actions aren't inherently good or evil.

everything is subjective.

Some even argue that even physics and mathematics are subjective

At the most basic level, yes.  All they are are actions or events.  What out there makes them good or bad is each individuals ideals or morals.  I began pondering this question while tripping as well, and it started out by just realizing that just because i didn't like something or agree with it, didn't make it wrong or bad.  I thought about how I do not enjoy rap music, but that does not mean rap music is bad by any means.  And then the idea evolved from there to all actions/events/things.

And in a way I am trolling them, but not really.  I guess I am trying to gt some thought provoking discussions going on.  Although I would probably have a much better shot at that by posting on these forums lol.  I am assuming that the professor, being a philosophy teacher, will somewhat enjoy my response when compared to all the previous Jesus loving posts.

After multiple posts from multiple people about how humans are above all other living things, it does not surprise me that we are decimating forests and wiping out species of animals left and right.  Kind of makes me sick people think this way, as if all living things are here just for the sake of our own existence.

Quoted from someones response to a post of mine.

Interesting view and good argument. This is really a debatable question especially if you are a believe in God. The book says one thing, but the Bible says another. In Genesis 1:26-28 it tells readers that humans were created in the image of God. While saying that, I am pointing out to you that it does not say that animals or other objects of the world were created in Gods image. If humans were created in our creators image that is saying so much in my opinion. I agree with Estere that all other things of this world fall below man. Fruit grows on trees and man eats it. Animals roam the world and we hunt them and then eat them. In a food chain example man is at the top of that food chain and we need the nutrients that these other objects such as animals for meat and fruit provide for human survival. God provided for His people and He did that in this way. I am also certainly more intelligent than an ape or a dog and in saying this I am pointing out to you that every creature is not equal. I am living and an ape is living, but that ape is certainly below me. If the ape and I were equals the ape would probably be joinging me at the dinner table.

:nojustno:

My response

In your food chain example, I do not see how humans are at the top of the food chain.  There are many other animals that eat fruit from trees and hunt other animals to eat them for their survival.  You may say it is because there are few animals that prey on humans, and that may be true today due to our increases in technology, but lets take a step back and think about it.  Human history has been alive and well since ~30,000 BC.  It wasn't until ~4,000 B.C. that humans invented the wheel.  So lets assume until the wheel was invented humans had trouble staying alive when lions, hyenas, bears, etc. attacked them.  That accounts for ~75% of human history when humans were not on the top of the food chain by your standards.  So when talking about human nature, I think it is important to not only think of what the human being is by today's standards, but what the human being has been throughout all of history.

And when you pointed out that every creature is not equal because you are more intelligent than an ape or a dog, who is to say that being more intelligent is the one criteria that puts you 'above' the ape or the dog.  Why can't the ape or the dog which never sins be above the human that sins on a daily basis one way or another?

Looking through my old posts. I got an A in this class for my GF for all those that warned me not to get an F.
