Oyster mushroom mycelium usually starts out very whispy and kinda looking like cobweb IME, give it a day then take a look.

it's been growing slowly over the last weeks, no explosion whatsoever, so it might as well be mycelium then???
I'm wondering because I think about transfering some to a petri dish..

That looks like Oyster myc to me but if its taking weeks to grow something may be wrong. Usually my oysterer myc is fast and aggressive. In my last project 5 gallons of coffee grounds were fully colonized in 5 days. How much spawn did you use? Is your straw properly hydrated? And finally what kind of container are you using? Myc likes high co2 buildup.

I agree with above posts. I too was scared when i grew my first oysters, nothing like cube dense rhizomorphic growth, although sometimes it will grow dense rhizomorphs.

not so surprising to me: I got 3 dowels from a friend that i put in this jar with wet cardboard and loose straw. Here we are now after a bit less than 2 weeks.
So i'm not tossing it, cool ;-)
I'll try to put it on dog agar to see if I can start some grains with it later..

it looks like oyster mycelium to me but your straw is not packed tight enough. soak a piece of cardboard the size of the 5 gal bucket diameter and place it on top, then put a rock on it to weigh it down.

its myc for sure. I still can't see the container its colonizing in but one reason it may be colonizing slowly is the shape of the container. Myc tends to stall in taller jars.

if its colonizing in something like this you aren't getting enough GE, especially if the lid is sealed.

oh, i just assumed it was a 5 gal bucket....i still think it needs to be more compressed. too much space between the pieces of straw for the myc to get dense

so I'm doing agar today, and then transfer it to a new container with more pasteurized straw, more tight, more hole for FAE

Are you transfering agar>straw or colonized straw>more straw?
Once your agar dish colonizes transfer agar>grain. Then do gran>grain to expand your spawn.
put a drop of red food coloring in your agar if you can. I just started doing this. Makes it way easier to see whats going on.

Hey man I'm not trying to be a downer but the more clear you are with your posts the more we will be able to help. We want you to succeed!
Will you be transferring the colonized straw into a bucket of uncolonized, pasteurized straw? Colonizing mycelium does not like fresh air exchange. It prefers high C02 buildup, so if you do drill holes in your bucket be sure to loosely wrap it with a garbage bag. If my bucket is new (no holes) I let it colonize with the lid on losely, then I drill the holes once colonization is complete. The drill bit hardly damages the myc, Oyster is forgiving and doesn't seem to mind
The reason the lid is on loosely, or in your case loosely wrapped with a bag is to provide gas exchange. Looking up the difference between FAE and GE will help you understand this process better!

ok, yeah I didn't say much, sorry..
here is what I did:
Colonized straw to pasteurized straw in 750mL jars with two small holes covered with micropore tape:

and just before that I transfered a bit of mycelium on dog food agar in two different petri dishes in a SAB. It is probabely not the best since it comes from a definitely not sterile environement, but It's just to see what is going to happen..

Would have been better to transfer a chunk of colonized straw to a larger container of uncolonized straw. Straw will never colonize in those jars. It seems like you are trying to apply the PF tek method to bulk methods.
If you want your spawn to colonize in jars like that use brown rice flower, birdseed, or rye. Any of these things when colonized are referred to as spawn.
Your spawn can be mixed in with bulk substrates like staw, manure, woodchips, for fast colonization.
GE is gas exchange. FAE is fresh air exchange. two very different things.
Don't sweat the agar. Thats what its for. People take fruits from the unsterile outdoors and clone them all the time. You will just need to tranfer a chunk of colonized agar on to a fresh dish 2 or 3 times until it is clean.
Good luck.

ok, I did transfer colonized straw into uncolonized straw in these jars. What do you mean by a larger container of uncolonized straw?
I tried to do something like this but instead of polytubing i used the jars and I thought colonized straw could replace colonized grain..
I'd be happy for you to correct me because I'm lost now
