Beware: Our Robot Overlords Have Arrived

When do you think humanoid/bipedal style robots will start being able to interact with us in a useful manner?

Most likely within our lifetimes. Anything AI related and stuff like that, long after our life times.

I may be totally making this up, but I believe japan uses robots of some kind in a useful manner.

Do you mean robots as in robotic arms and such that work assembly lines? If so, those have been around for quite some time. I believe Honda has the most advanced biped robot, the ASIMO, but it's only a novelty still.

I was asking more along the lines of AI, which as you mentioned would be after our lifetimes and I concur.

When the conquering aliens bring them.

I think we will see it in video games/personality simulators first (err probably more industrail/economic simulators actually, personality is secondary), then robots.  It is a really formidable thing though.  I wonder what the most advanced AI they have in secret is.  Definitely not those robots.

I love this one:

Adorable.  Poor guy just choked.

 Isn't weird how we feel some emotion towards a robot when they appear humanoid? (i.e adorable robot falling in the gif).

I find that super intruiging because when we do finally have biped robots for civilian applications I'm sure people will develop feelings for them in a way in which we cannot yet understand.

And there will be that one cop that just doesn't trust them and know they're capable of murder?

No not assembly lines http://news.discovery.com/tech/robotics/ten-humanoid-robots-to-staff-new-japanese-hotel-150209.htm
http://spectrum.ieee.org/automaton/robotics/humanoids/japanese-robot-actroid-sit

Stuff like this we might be able to see pretty soon, but I can imagine it having many complications when it first becomes popular.

AI I would love to be around just to witness what something like that would truly be capable of. But does seem like a low chance of it happening in our lifetimes, considering we still don't even know what a consciousness is, so my hopes for creating one that learns and adapts go out the window

Does make me think about having robots doing human jobs though.

Wow, those robots in both of the links are far more advanced than I would've imagined. Especially the hotel workers.
Albeit pre-programmed gestures and actions, the fact that they look and behave like humans makes it for an amazing technological advancement I wasn't aware of.

I'm not saying this to be silly, the next order of progress would obviously be sex robots imo. :strokebeard:

They say that with any new technology, the first thing it gets used for is sex. Photographs, video recording, the Internet, and now virtual reality. They already have porn for the oculus rift.

Sex robots will be in our lifetime, I think.

For sure. I caught a random youtube video of people reacting to watching porn through the Oculus Rift a couple months ago.

The developer version of the oculus is like $600-$700 or more I think.  I'm hoping when they actually release it commercially it will be alot cheaper, like $200-$300 I expect.
