Building a cob house soon...any pointers?
    #21792611 - 06/11/15 11:24 AM (8 years, 7 months ago)

This project was supposed to start in the spring of this year but because of my pregnancy and complications it has been postponed to start spring 2016. My main concerns are electrical and plumbing (I do NOT want a composting toilet). Also wondering if anyone would know if running the grey water into my flower garden would be a horrible idea if I'm using nothing but my homemade castile soap all the time (I've used it for pest control on them before). I have a ton of stuff I've been collecting and a lot of extra building material from when my grandpa was going to build a house for his mother but she died before construction began (brand new doors and windows and hardware and such). Also I know the thing with cob is to think small but I'm going to need a couple of bedrooms since children will be living there or at least a one bedroom with a loft (I already have plans for an addition later). So far all that's on the property is a well I had dug last year and a stream behind the property.

Any suggestions, ideas or pointers from anyone who has dealt with cob or construction in general would be greatly appreciated.

It's great when women get that nest building thing going.

Cob house?  Not a clue.  Sounds interesting.  I'll have to Google it first, then give you some bad advice...

Its really not that expensive, just very labor intensive. What cost the most is getting electricity and water in place.
I was lucky enough to get a nice piece of land as a graduation gift when I got my bsn though so I put a well in with the money I saved.

all i can say is make sure the climate you live in will sustain a cob house.  They will not hold up in all climates/weather conditions

best of luck!

We've actually built a garden shed and chicken coup like thing at my sisters house already and it seems to be pretty sturdy... the key is a good foundation (we used river rocks) and a good roof.

im interested in structural support with cob, i know you can make load bearing walls out of it, but i'd like to see what people use for beams etc. how they go up stories what they use to make the second story floor (or the 9th).

Hey guys  just posted this on another page!
I don't have so much experience with cob myself but have been doing a far bit of research and and plan to build some structures when I'll get the land!

This book contains amazing DIY information as well as an amazing ideology and philosophy in sync with living in and building clay homes.

Highly recommended reading it! I know there's a pdf out there for download but I'd recommend buying a copy.

Another good read I've found was the cob builders handbook, I found it online for free but I can't remember where. Its a good book to read when getting started and has a lot of the basics in it, it also gets you thinking about things you probably wouldn't have thought of otherwise.

well i've been reading a lot about cob.

for running plumbing and electrical i suggest using large (8 inch or so) pvc pipe or something like it, as a conduit. then for your water use pex with push-on connectors, and for drain use pvc, for the drain the conduit needs to be at a constant slant, so i would just build that into the system.

building a cinderblock foundation with french drains on both sides seems like the best way to make the house last forever.

if you are going to build a second story, you just build in large beams and run flooring on them, seems simple.

and you may want to spend the money on pre-fabricated roof sections they sell them at lowes and home depot and will deliver right to your build site.

im interested in this process

From what I was reading you can actually do the roof first then build up to it... I was going to use rock because I can get it cheap/free and I thought it would look good with the cob. There's also a small cabin on the property that was never finished that's sitting on concrete so I'm trying to think of something to do with it or at least find some use for the slab.

I'm using a really simple floor plan too...open living room and kitchen and two beds and bathroom under a loft.

I need to go take some pics of it to post so maybe someone will have some idea of what to do with it.

You have to say it's adobe wIth building codes and I'm kinda pissed that they won't let me have off the grid power where it is but oh well.

they cant STOP you from having off grid power, they can require that you tie in.

the two aren't mutually exclusive.

i have a book from (i want to say eagle research) that i got about 10 years ago, which talks about how to make an automatic switch to backfeed your meter, and use the grid as your battery.

called something like "how to make your electric meter run backwards"

i'll google it in a bit.

Plan your wiring well ahead of time and use regular schedule 40 PVC.  I don't know about using something as big as 8" because that's not a trade size I've ever seen nor would I know how you would easily transition to smaller branch circuits, terminate into a box, etc, from a pipe that large.

I don't like using pex for supplying water I might be drinking so I would suggest copper.

You would need a special "bi-directional" meter in order to get credit for what you produce and send back onto the grid.  Your power company would be able to tell you the specifics of that, or whether you have net metering in your area.

i just mean running the 8 inch through the walls as a conduit, so you can fish through later as needed, you dont need to step it down at all, just put a t where you want access

copper isnt great to drink from, nor pvc, and glass breaks....pex is pretty safe as far as pipe goes, and cannot burst like copper and doesnt need to be soldered. you CAN use push on fittings with copper too but pex costs A WHOLE LOT LESS.

DEPENDS On if they have smart boxes or the wheel style... i have a wheel style box

i have a feeling that people go way too overboard about this stuff.

im actually more concerned about what they are growing vegetables in to feed the cows and pigs and us.

to the point that i dont think there IS clean food, unless you grow it yourself, and even then you have run off shared water supplies etc.

to the point that its pointless to try and eat clean food UNLESS you are growing everything yourself on an island and even then its full of anti-depressants and other bullshit we dont want/need/like

further to the point that life is too short to miss out on a yummy meatstick with chili and coleslaw on occasion.

which wont change the fact that i plan on building a cob commune and raising all my own food in the future.

I've sketched out plans to build raised beds out of cob... probably won't work but I'll let you know how it goes. I love growing my own food but wasn't really able to this summer due to all the pregnancy complications

if you can find a way to watch it, it will change your perspective on gardening, that and a you tube channel called grow your greens.

the link i sent you the guy is LDS Or jahovahs witness or something so he attributes everything to god constantly.

funny tho, everything he attributes to god you can subsitute the word evolution and it seems less annoying

personally i subsitute "the universe" mentally...and it works nicely

Ok so I made the trip to take pics of the property today so you guys can see what I have to work with...
Driveway
Big open area
Looking back towards driveway
Small driveway heading down to old dilapidated hunters cabin and stream
Old hunters cabin in total ruins BUT sitting on a nice slab of concrete

the slab would have to drain well or it would soften your cob.

Oh no no no... I wasn't planning on putting it there, just trying to think of something to do with it... Like maybe use the existing block walls and put some other ones up and a roof for storage or let some goats stay in it or something. I want the cob in the big open area.

i would totally use the slab, i'd just french drain it first then i'd cob up on it, and build a playhouse for logan/guest house/place he can move out to when he wants to be more independant at 14...etc

Welllll....I was planning on putting another smaller place there somewhere so I could let someone stay there for helping me with the yard and animals. Or you know, maybe to let my future husband live in when he pisses me off.

I've always thought that should be a thing, you should be able to marry whoever the fuck you want..land of the free huh? Lol

Well I guess I'm about to get ready to go clean up the property. I'm getting all excited that things are finally getting rolling on the new house. I probably would've started yesterday but I wore a dress for some strange reason....bad choice.
