they cant STOP you from having off grid power, they can require that you tie in.

the two aren't mutually exclusive.

i have a book from (i want to say eagle research) that i got about 10 years ago, which talks about how to make an automatic switch to backfeed your meter, and use the grid as your battery.

called something like "how to make your electric meter run backwards"

i'll google it in a bit.

Plan your wiring well ahead of time and use regular schedule 40 PVC.  I don't know about using something as big as 8" because that's not a trade size I've ever seen nor would I know how you would easily transition to smaller branch circuits, terminate into a box, etc, from a pipe that large.

I don't like using pex for supplying water I might be drinking so I would suggest copper.

You would need a special "bi-directional" meter in order to get credit for what you produce and send back onto the grid.  Your power company would be able to tell you the specifics of that, or whether you have net metering in your area.

i just mean running the 8 inch through the walls as a conduit, so you can fish through later as needed, you dont need to step it down at all, just put a t where you want access

copper isnt great to drink from, nor pvc, and glass breaks....pex is pretty safe as far as pipe goes, and cannot burst like copper and doesnt need to be soldered. you CAN use push on fittings with copper too but pex costs A WHOLE LOT LESS.

DEPENDS On if they have smart boxes or the wheel style... i have a wheel style box

Yep I also have two of my professors, the green club and the geology club at my college helping with the labor.

Any ideas what to do with the old, unfinished house? Should I just tear it down?

i have a feeling that people go way too overboard about this stuff.

im actually more concerned about what they are growing vegetables in to feed the cows and pigs and us.

to the point that i dont think there IS clean food, unless you grow it yourself, and even then you have run off shared water supplies etc.

to the point that its pointless to try and eat clean food UNLESS you are growing everything yourself on an island and even then its full of anti-depressants and other bullshit we dont want/need/like

further to the point that life is too short to miss out on a yummy meatstick with chili and coleslaw on occasion.

which wont change the fact that i plan on building a cob commune and raising all my own food in the future.

I've sketched out plans to build raised beds out of cob... probably won't work but I'll let you know how it goes. I love growing my own food but wasn't really able to this summer due to all the pregnancy complications
