I know it can take a little longer before you start to see and mycelium - but when should I decide they are a lost cause? Beginning to wonder if their internal heat was too high when I inoculated.

If its MS it can take up to 2 weeks. Work on your patience and leave your jars alone

Just go out and do shit and don't even think about your jars. It will seem like they colonize quick if you aren't watching them 24/7 haha. But seriously it can take a while. I've had rye jars take up to even 3 weeks to show growth.

After 3 weeks you should consider it a lost cause. How long did you wait until after sterilization, and what did you inoculate; pf or grain?

I used brf. I let it cool down with the lid still on for 45 minutes then an hour out in open air

If you don't see anything within a month toss them and start over.
Seriously though, like stated above, it can take up to a couple weeks sometimes.

If after 10 days I don't see signs of growth I usually start to worry.
Infact I'm only growing in summers. The heat here speeds up colonization like crazy, bye day 3 I see signs of growth. In colder times it just takes too long, mold starts to cover my room due to high humidity and it all goes to shit.
Give it some time, especially if you have a slightly colder climate where you live.
