sweetish smelling mono
    #21792022 - 06/11/15 07:33 AM (8 years, 7 months ago)

I try to read up on this but found no definite answers.

Made 6 rye jars from MS syringe, 2 went bad with a nasty smell, I tossed them. The other 4 colonized good and smelled like mushrooms with a bit of sweet odor to it. It is similar to the smell of my box where I kept my dried ones from my first grow. That batch lasted for a couple of months and the smell grow a bit stronger with time, but never smelled nasty.

I decided to spawn the remaining jars to coir. The substrate colonized nice and on time, put it to fruiting and it produced some really big and good looking fruits all over along with many tiny aborts. I do not see anything moldy in the tub, nor anything weird on the grown fruits, but when I open the tub behind the mushroomy smell there is still this light sweet smell lingering.

Should I be concerned about it? Is it possible to be contaminated and still produce big healthy looking fruits? Should I wait if it produces a second flush successfully or it does not prove anything?

I wouldn't be too concerned. Could just be pooled water under the substrate. Smells and bacteria is fine. You're looking for molds. That's not fine.

Thanks, it very well could be, I had to use an ad hoc liner and some water might pooled under it.

FYI one Trichoderma species has a sweetish smell. Kind of like coconut.

I always associate the sweet smelling trich with  hawaiian rolls, the very sweet smelling bread.  Too me it smells almost dead on
