Oyster Yeilds Greenhouse vs. Outdoors + Grow Log **UPDATE** Please Comment
    #21791873 - 06/11/15 06:09 AM (8 years, 7 months ago)

Does anyone have reliable info on Oyster yeilds? I have a 5 gallon bucket ready to fruit and another one will be ready next week.

I plan on just hanging them in a tree in the shade, but I'm wondering if it would be worth it to build a small pvc greenhouse?

Depending on where you are the biggest problems with having them outside are flies and slugs/snails...

I usually get bigger clusters and nicer looking oysters from outdoor grows than I do from indoors. They just seem to be way meatier. Just fine tuning my new grow room though so well see what happens!

Maybe just put a screen around them to stop the bugs? The bugs I get love the mushrooms and slam into them with their faces but don't seem to do any damage. They look exactly like mosquitoes but I think they are a kind of gnat.

The fungus gnats that we have here will lay eggs which later lead to worms in the mushrooms..

I guess what I'm asking is are your mushrooms going to be getting enough light if they're draped in that?

Its designed to let light through. Underneath the row cover would be shady, slightly more humid, and insect free.

Here are some pictures of how row cover is typically used.

This is not my setup exactly, but I've placed my oyster bucket on a small stand and have it sitting inside something similar to this. I watered the bucket today so hopefully we see some Oysters soon!

I freeking LOVE Kale!!

on 5 gal bucket yields, i've gathered you can get about 1-2 lbs per harvest, and anywhere from 3-5 flushes.

i used a crazy amount of spawn. 9 quarts! but it was metabolites were really starting to get nasty looking so i wanted to use it up. does spawn ratio make a big difference in yeild? as it would with cubes?

spawn rate will absolutely affect yield, as well as supplements, primarily nitrogen as i understand effects yield but also increases contam rate. Nitrogen supplements are typically a low % like %2-5. Unless you're using a low N supplement like cow poo vs say chicken litter which has a high N %

for my next grow I will be adding some bat guano as a supplement. too high in nitrogen to use for cubes.

Depending on the type of bat guano it can be some of the most potent organic nitrogen fertilizer available. I would start with extremely low amounts.

Hey guys

Walked down to the garden today to check on the Oysters. No action yet. Its been humid and rainy all week, so it should'nt be long. The good news is the row cover appears to be working. They are bug free.

Please comment on the setup. Criticism welcome. Note that the sub is 100% coffee. It looks yellowish on top but IME thats just how coffee subs look when water pools on top.

I've been watering my bucket with a watering can.....is there much of a difference between this and misting?

Are you directly watering your coffee sub. inside that bucket?  Hopefully you've got plenty of drain holes cut out of the bottom.

It should already be close to the proper moisture content and really only the pins might need helped along with extra waterings or misting. I would think in all that tall grass the humidity is fine if its been rainy.

Also, a lid would help if your loosing to much moisture out the top and it will keep the rain from drowning it...
