broken flowers
    #21791616 - 06/11/15 03:13 AM (8 years, 7 months ago)

Last summer I had a big old clump of Echinocereus salm-dyckianus flower for the first time in my care. The flowers didn't fully open, and I just assumed it was due to the light or temperature not being insufficient.

So, this year it is out on the patio basking in full sun (when it decides to shine..)
Lots more buds forming up.
But again, they don't open

Anyone have an idea what is going on?

:confused2:

No idea, but it happens occasionally to me too, especially in Chamaelobivia hybrids. I used to think of those flowers as semi-aborted because they must have been initiated in a period of particular stress, either too hot or too dry. The situation returns to normal in the subsequent flowers. I don't think that's the case with yours, though.

Happened also to me last year with a Notocactus. 2 flowers oft of 3 just aborted in the process. But i started caring that plant recently, so it had several years of no care and maybe it was because of that.

Thank you both for your input.
This is happening to every flower on it consistently.

Must be an undesirable trait, then. Mutations can show themselves in flowers too. :\

I have another one with broken flowers
I got this plant in 2012, with spent flowers still attached. It didn't flower in 2013, and during the last 2 years when it has flowered, they have failed to open properly. Last year I chalked it up to maybe a change in conditions leading to aborted buds. The small bud there is a piece left from last year, these take forever to dry up and detach!

Gymnocalycium berchtii JS153
