Continual Monotub Failure (w/ Pics)
    #21791276 - 06/11/15 01:02 AM (8 years, 7 months ago)

I am not sure what I am doing wrong.

I've followed the elementary Coir Tek down to the nano step.

I've graduated from success with PF, through to PF Tek Casings, to Grain and small cased grain trays, but for some reason my Tubs have been failing miserably.

It looks like the culprit might be Trich. Funnily enough, when I moved to tubs, suddenly all my grain transfers (that I do in a glove box in another room) have been getting contaminated with the damn stuff as well.

I've successfully grain transferred over 50 jars in the past few months with absolutely no contamination, it seems like the timing from switching to tubs is too uncanny.

Short of tearing everything out of my house, sterilizing the whole place, throwing out the jars and tubs, then starting fresh, can any of you recommend any tips on ways I can avoid this?

As you can see I cut out a lot of the contamed areas replacing holes with verm, but it continued to come back.

Should I clean my incubation chamber (Tub in Tub)?

Should I pressure cook grain > 90 mins?

Can I reuse this tub somehow, or is it burned now that Trich has seen it.

Pics are below, I'd love any advice you guys can give me.

Thanks in Advance.

You don’t need to tear everything out of your house but you need to do a thorough cleaning and disinfecting.  Yes, sorry, bleach and Lysol.

Anything which is infected you should throw out.  If you want to keep the containers, dispose of the materials outside, add bleach and clean very thoroughly with disinfectant dish soap..  Before you go inside your house change your clothes and disinfect yourself.  Seriously.  Spray Lysol all over yourself, do whatever you need to do to get rid of the Contagion.  After you go back inside take a thorough shower and disinfect your bathroom.

Congratulations, you managed to spread the spores all through your house.

As mentioned above clean your IC outside with bleach, rinse with hot water, and finally clean with disinfectant soap.

Finally: buy a HEPA air filter.

All is not lost!

I wouldn't do that. Sounds like such a hassle. You said you moved rooms and now everything is contaminating. Do you do agar work or grain work in a still air box? Still air boxes are key, then it doesn't matter what room you're in. If you can make everything clean af by the time you spawn, your tubs should be fine.

BTW everybody who's somebody knows the hardest part is getting everything clean right up until spawning. Tubs won't succeed without clean spawn. Clean spawn and beneficial microbes will fight off trich. That's how I got around all my contamination problems, and I live in an old 60s farm house with 3 dogs and cats.

I do all my work in the kitchen, and I don't  bleach/alcohol anything.

Stop grain transfering.  Trich can hitch with out any notice at all.  That tub is mostly trich, which only really happens before the first flush when it is inside your spawn.

It most likely has nothing to do with your room.. Try innoculating jars and not doing grain transfers, also check your inoculate.  It's 95% one of those 2 steps gone wrong.  Clean looking spawn looks clean because trich is very white and can even grow clear threads if it has no foothold on nutrition.
