Ayahuasca Diet Recipes

I will be embarking on my 1st Ayahuasca journey in 9 days (next weekend). The retreat takes place in a yurt in the hills with about 10-14 other people including a facilitator and his assistant. The facilitator sent out a preparation letter to each participant, which I will copy and paste a portion of the letter here:
1. For a minimum of 5 days before and 3 after the ceremony, be very conscious of all that you bring into your body and mind, and choose to ingest only that which honors your deepest clarity and healing. Avoid all junk foods, junk media, junk conversations, and treat your temple of body and heart in the most honoring way that you can.
2. Eat LIGHT and FRESH organic foods including raw, steamed or baked vegetables, fresh fruit and vegetable juices. Non-acidic fruits and grains are OK, as well as beans, lentils, sustainably harvested fish and organic poultry. Keep it simple and alkaline. Drink plenty of water, and be grateful for the abundant presence of clean water in your life. A light fast or cleanse can be good in the week or two before the meditation, but make sure you eat enough in the days just prior to the retreat so that you have enough strength for the meditations.
3. Avoid fried foods. Small amounts of raw or lightly cooked coconut oil or olive oil are OK.
4. Reduce caffeine, stopping stimulants altogether for a minimum of 3 days before, especially strong coffee. If you have a strong caffeine habit, you may want to stop a minimum of a week before the meditation so your body has a chance to detox it from your system.
5. Avoid salt for 3 days before.
6. Avoid red meats, especially pork(which should be avoided for at least a week before). Simple organic chicken/turkey and sustainably harvested fish OK.
7. Avoid sugar and all artificial flavorings, preservatives, sweeteners and highly processed foods for minimum 5 days before and 2 after. This includes artificial chemicals found in synthetic soaps, toiletries and perfumes.
8. No chili or hot peppers, onions or garlic for minimum 48 hrs before.
9. No alcohol or recreational drugs for a minimum of one week before and after. This includes cannabis in all forms.
10. Avoid sexual activity for 3 days before and after.
My question is... do any of you have specific recipes that you could share for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, which would follow the MAOI diet regimen? Also, do you suggest that I fast the day of the ceremony? I was thinking that I should probably have something besides water in my system. Specifically, I was thinking of making a kale, strawberry, blueberry smoothie with a hint of apple cider vinegar and chia seeds the night before the ceremony, and then waking up in the morning and having another smoothie. Other than that I plan on hydrating myself throughout the day...
I will also have abstained from alcohol 2 weeks prior, cannabis for over a month, and psychedelics/dissociatives for 10 days prior to ceremony. Any other advice?!

There is not a good reason to do any of those things for Aya other than they said so
Would say, that is more ritual than required... Makes it special. Won't get into the idea that organic really doesn't make a difference....
Reversable MAOis don't need a strict diets. The reason people on nonreversable MAOI (I.e., prescription) diets is that MAOis do prevent the body from breaking down tyramine, which at high level can cause health problems. Being reversible MAOI are only active for a short period of time, tyramine can't build up. It makes sense perhaps that while you are on the reversable MAOI, that you limit the tyramine consumption.... So don't eat foods rich in tyramine right before or after drinking Aya, b caapi or Syrian rue...
So,'Google 'foods high in tyramine' and avoid those a few hours before and during your MAOI ingestion. I avoid sauerkraut, preserved meats, etc. I do normally like a good protein source the day of, good energy. Eggs, fresh meat, etc.
Anyway... The above is my opinion after doing my research and self testing... I would say, do your own research and decide for your self. The MAOI diet won't hurt you... So...
Peace

Most people simply never eat the foods that are MAOI restricted. And it is only so-called irreversible MAOIs that are hazardous in combination with tyramine/tryptophan-rich foods. The beta-carbolines found in rue and caapi are are so-called reversible. If one were to eat a pharma MAOI blacklisted food when on a beta-carboline, it would interfere with the MAOI action, but it wouldn't be hazardous (i.e. I think it would kill your ayahuasca trip — at least that's the impression I got from reading the following cited information about a synthetic but reversible MAOI: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/21464326). Now if one were on an irreversible pharma MAOI and they ate a blacklisted food, they would get a hazardous reaction because those MAOIs permanently denature the body's MAO enzymes (i.e. irreversible). This isn't completely permanent, though, because the body is always generating new MAO enzymes, however it means that until one stops taking the MAOI they need to follow the diet because they've fundamentally changed their body's metabolism. I want to emphasize that most people never eat the real MAOI-restricted foods. An academic article entitled 'MAO Inhibitors: Risks, Benefits, and Lore'[1] notes that after some people wound up dead/hospitalized from pharma MAOIs in the 50s/60s, there was a bit of medical hysteria that ensued and many foods that should never have been blacklisted were blacklisted.
Hypertensive crises with MAOIs have occurred in some patients following ingestion of foods containing large amounts of tyramine or tryptophan. In general, patients taking MAOIs should avoid protein foods that have undergone protein breakdown by aging, fermentation, pickling, smoking, or bacterial contamination.
Foye's Principles of Medicinal Chemistry, Seventh Edition. Thomas L. Lemke, Ph.D., David A. Williams, Ph.D., Victoria F. Roche, Ph.D., S. William Zito, Ph.D. 2013.
The 'Risks, Benefits, and Lore' article lists the following foods as 'unnecessarily restricted':
avocados; bananas; beef or chicken bouillon; chocolate; fresh and mild cheeses, eg, ricotta, cottage cheese, cream cheese, processed cheese slices; fresh meat, poultry, or fish; meat gravy (fresh); monosodium glutamate; peanuts; properly stored pickled or smoked fish (eg, herring); raspberries; and yeast extracts (except Marmite).
On the same token, it lists the following foods as 'absolute restrictions':
• Aged cheeses and meats • Banana peels • Broad bean (fava) pods • Spoiled meats • Marmite • Sauerkraut • Soybean products • Draft beers
Nardil is a very popular drug on the Social Anxiety Support forums. Although MAOIs are considered to be old-fashioned, they're actually one of the most remarkable class of antidepressants:
For those of you who're unfamiliar with Nardil:
it is one of the oldest known antidepressants. It is sometimes regarded as the best monotherapy for extinguishing social anxiety. It's an MAOI, or more specifically a non-selective irreversible inhibitor of monoamine oxidase with a complex mode of action. It was invented in the 1950s after a similar compound used to treat tuberculosis was accidentally discovered to make people happy. Since then, science has not been able to find a compound capable of producing a statistically significantly better antidepressant effect. It's rarely prescribed anymore due to a heavy side-effect profile and especially because of its interaction with ubiquitous sympathomimetic drugs such as pseudoephedrine, serotonergic agents such as Prozac and tyramine containing foods like blue cheese. The risks of these interactions have unfortunately been grossly overestimated in the context of a sane person observing reasonable precautions.
A Remarkable Compound: Nardil Notes and Observations. GiftofGABA. 12-31-2013
Here's a firsthand account of an individual who incurred a hypertensive crisis when on Nardil after eating spoiled meat:
It's very rare to have a hypertensive crisis while on MAOIs, but the danger is there and you can get one when you least expect it. Took me two years to find out how it felt like. I ate spoiled meat and it gave me a splitting headache, felt like my head was about to explode. Before that incident i had been eating everything and paid the diet no concern at all.
I still don't care about the diet, but gourmet cheese and spoiled food should be avoided at all costs.
Re: MAOI "diet" by psychiatrists - a joke?. ChopSuey. 09-22-2014.
MAOIs are also not as dangerous as people have been lead to believe in terms of drug combinations, either. It has been reported by two individuals on Social Anxiety Support that high doses of amphetamines are taken with with their MAOIs.[2][3] From what I understand, MAOIs are capable of causing the excruciating symptom of serotonin syndrome because of their capacity to allow extra serotonin to build up in the synapses of the brain (i.e. part of the antidepressant effect). If this is pushed too far, i.e. by taking a highly serotonergic drug in combination with an MAOI, one can get serotonin syndrome. Amphetamines are not highly serotonergic. An article entitled, 'MAO inhibitors: An option worth trying in treatment-resistant cases'[4] notes the following regarding MAOI drug combinations: 'We have found all antidepressants that do not involve significant serotonin reuptake inhibition (e.g., bupropion, trazodone, and tricyclics other than clomipramine) can be safely administered with MAOIs. Combination therapy is worth considering because it may be effective when other approaches have failed.'
Any readers who are not familiar with my website may like to look for themselves at my scientific publications and credibility in this field. There are few practising psychiatrists who have the publications, experience and knowledge that is summarised in this website.
It is, unfortunately, necessary to state clearly from the beginning that much of what is published by doctors in books and journals about MAOIs is either poorly informed, or just plain wrong. As an example, much of the information that comes with MAOIs (the PI, or product information sheet) contains inaccurate material concerning, among other things: serotonin toxicity, drug interactions generally, and dietary tyramine.

Someone even posted a trip report on Erowid about MDMA, MDA, and MDE being ingested in combination with ayahuasca!

2. Im not taking Nardil but I'm taking 80mg Parnate. Recent studies show that if you're MAOI resistant stimulants can help. I'm taking 70 mg of Vyvanse and Ritalin (not Adderal). My blood pressure is normal and the MAOI started working. Some people go as high as 120mg with stimulants. Just watch your blood pressure. Of course the higher you go the dietary restrictions become more pertinent.

Ive never abstained much except to eat foods low in tyramine for the day before, day of and day after.
I do eat something for bfast, lunch and dinner the day of - usually nothing more than bread, eggs and fruit.
With that being said I'm always good to go during the trip but I've often noticed getting a horrible headache late that night and the next day. Probably because I've ate too much that day or got a little dehydrated.
It's better to stick to some kind of diet imo but you probably don't have to go all out for days.
Avoid sex? Nahhhh

Thank you for the info!
I will probably try to follow the recommended diet for 5 days before and 3 days after, but I won't be militant about it until 2 days before and after.
So it's okay to eat turkey, chicken, nuts, and bananas?

So much conflicting information out there for which foods are safe to eat or which foods contain tyramine. One sit will say avoid broccoli, and another site will praise it. So frustrating!
