What type of poppy pods are these?
    #21790630 - 06/10/15 09:53 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

My grandmother gave them to me for seeds to plant, and I'm pretty sure they aren't papaver somniferum, but can anyone give me a definite ID on them?  It'd be awesome if I'm wrong, but I'm 99% sure they aren't.  I'm still going to plant them, though.  They have a pretty pink flower when they bloom.  Thanks in advance.

Those still had a lot more to go,and you'll not get viable seed from those.

They are Papaver somniferum.

They needed to totally finish, and dry on the plant before they were ready:wink:

I know nothing about that,I do know that you'll not get any viable seeds now.

You have to wait until the plant starts to die and dry.
the pods will then turn a greyish color, and eventually end up brown when they are finished, like so...

You may get lucky and get viable seed from your brownest pod though.

She has more, so I'll wait until later to get the brown pods.  I'm now curious if I can make tea or something with these, because I don't want them to go to a complete waste.

sundrop. you can always take the immature seeds from the pods and cook with them. Put them on the top of a homeade loaf of bread. . or in Indian food recipes maybe.

True that they don't look mature and could probably get a bit bigger.  While the germination rate might not be great they still might have some viable seeds, even if they are a much lighter color than the mature seeds.  You can pick them still green (actually they turn a bit blue when they mature) before the vents open and later dry out no problem IMO.  You want the crown to be erect and pointing up a little (some strains seem to point up more up than others).

The flower shop down the street from me sells bouquets of giant fresh, green, pods with closed vents during the summer, kept in water.  Last September it started getting near freezing in the evening and morning, and the seeds were actually germinated with long tap roots while still in the green pods.

Immature pods are still active.  Tea works, but as a lazy bastard I often just chew up and and eat fresh pods.  I kind of like the taste and the fiber prevents constipation. Might not be a great idea if they are a low potency ornamental strain though.  Tea would be a better idea in that case.

I just grind them up and add some water and heat on the stove, then I strain the stuff?

That sounds like it would work.  What I usually do is throw them in a coffee grinder, then in a french press, and pour some hot but not boiling water into a french press and let sit for 5 or 10 minutes.  Maybe do 2 washes.  Some people say you should add an acid such as lemon juice, but I've never noticed a difference.  Helps the taste at least.

BRB while I try to get a bat out of my house . . .

Are we sure these are Somni's? Idk, I've been staring at those pics a while, and I honestly don't feel 100% sure. Good chance they're Orientale, in which case no real rec use.

The look of the crown compared to the pod is what's bugging me. Even when young the crown becomes darker in comparison to the pod, but these look as though they're near ripe. It's also turned upward already, (or at least horizontal) leading me to believe this is an older pod, not as young as may be thought. I don't feel 100% sure on an ID.

I don't see any ribs either, they appear completely smooth. Normally I'd see some amount of "lumping" on the pod, verticals caverns and vessels that contain the O. I could easily be wrong, but I'm not totally convinced they aren't oriental.

Hmmm.... After looking closely again, they do appear to be Somni's... Would hate to give a bad ID tho.
Do you have any pics of the plant? That would help immensely. Even close ups of a flower would be great.

Looks a lot like my Afghani Pinks.  Small to medium pods, the crowns on mine never come fully erect, pink flower with white center.  These are an Album strain, so the seeds will be white.  I'm also in the south-east, harvest time is now!
