no gravel? I started out on economy wbs and never had an issue with it;
I would like to note though, the batches of wbs I started out with (years ago) would germinate if left setting out too long, this batch I'm getting into now looks and feels like wbs that I've tried before that wouldn't germinate, "dried out"... but I dunno if that has anything to do with your problems

Yeah no clue. Kinda a moot point since I'm moving away from it but I'm curious about it.

Dunno, usually when I see the red & white bags the store doesn't have the more obviously labeled pennington bags. I have seen them both in the same store before and bought both. They are very similar, but the clearly labeled pennington bag seems to have more of those smaller yellow seeds in it. I wanna say the white & red bagged seeds had a slightly darker appearance too after processing. I may have a couple grain qt blanks laying around that show the difference. May have knocked them up already, I'll dig through the inventory tonight to check.
Both the economy mix and the clearly labeled penningtons have a few bits of cracked corn in it. It's not listed in the ingredient list and the count is insignificant, I just pick em out if I see em.
There is also tiny gravel in both bags, I think more in the clearly labeled bags. These were removed from the clearly labeled bags.

The red economy mix worked ok for me, but for an extra $2-3 per bag the Pennington Classic was a better buy.

I used economy mix last year. This year I found an open bag at walmart and noticed a lot of corn so went with Pennington's.

I'm betting that economy mix is the shit at the bottom of the pile that has been rained on, left out in the sun, rats digging through it, etc so maybe I will fare better with oats.
Especially since they seem to prep on the drier side it can't hurt where bacteria is concerned.
You will probably really like the oats. I think they are kickass.
They are fairly clean compared to most WBS and prep extremely easy.
After using bulk oats I will never go back to WBS. A lot cheaper in my area as well.

Since we're on the subject I saw some sunflower seed only WBS (no shells) at Walmart, anyone ever try that?

Seems like seeds by themselves would get mushy too easily

I've seen the sunflower seed bags at walmart. Sometimes that all they have. Its not hulled, it still has the black outer shell. I've never tried it. But I have used the floater sunflower seeds from WBS in a separate batch and they worked just fine. So, I imagine that the bags of sunflower seeds would work also. They are a bit tricky to soak since they want to float. After a day of soaking you will have cobweb on the surface floaters and even some sprouters. Still works fine after a bringing to a hard boil and straining. If you stir them every once in a while when they are soaking that would cut down the cobweb, but it really doesn't seem to matter.
I did a comparison thread in the edible section with king oysters. The experiment got fucked due to a big temperature fluctuation in my grow. But from the experiment I gathered that sunflower seeds are a viable option if that's all you got.

Yeah I've been recycling my floaters lately too. I know the hulled seeds at least will colonize just fine and jars with lots of sunflower seeds seem to be as productive as those with fewer. I guess my main concern is that the fat content is so much higher than what's commonly used for spawn. Not sure if that could have could some kind of negative effect particularly when the hull has been removed.

I have 2 jars full of sunflower seeds I plan to spawn and directly compare to my WBS spawn with the same LC.
Trying to decide if i want to throw them out or keep them.
I only use the WBS from walmart

I dunno how I missed that you said you found them without the hulls in the previous post. It would be an interesting experiment, you should do it for the shroomery! Every once in a while i spot an unhulled sunflower seed in my wbs. They colonized just fine, but a whole jar of them I dunno.

nope. won't either. have you tried adding a dash of lime or gypsum to the soak? also strainers make a big difference. if i use these two with the holes. it causes me moisture issues as the water gets trapped.

the mesh strainers make all the difference.

when i hear things like its sticky no matter what i did. it could be the prep. its possible it was over prepped. maybe over steeped or cooked.

Yep that's the exact same WBS I was referring to and it didn't work out so well for me. Who knows tho, maybe it was a fluke or something else was at play

I tried some dish soap to no avail. It was sticky before the simmer, was literally sticking to my hands and everything. Relatively speaking it was that bad. I've used much worse.
