Walmart wbs
    #21789635 - 06/10/15 06:27 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

Anyone especially in the SE use the red and white economy mix wbs from Walmart? If so have you had any issues with it lately? Trying to narrow something down.

Don't live in the SE but I beleive I may have tried the same brand and if it was the same thing, it looked fine and began to colonize to the size of a dime and then every last one stalled completely for some reason..

Like I said tho I'm not positive if it was the same kind tho. Did it contain wheat berrys?

Yes. I noticed recently they started added cracked corn in the mix too.

Yo bro, what up? SE here.

I used to exclusively use economy mix, switched to rye/wheat berries when I moved (still in the SE), and am now switching back to WBS temporarily;
I picked up a bag a few months back and PC'd a few jars and colonized 'em (with pans I think) and didn't have any problem with this batch;
however I did notice that this batch seemed especially "dried out"...

What are you trying to narrow down???

ninja edit:

Is it the cracked corn thing?

I believe that particular wbs to be nasty as all get out and loaded with endospres. I've got the relevant thread "breakthrough" real close.

Just trying to see if anyone else noticed anything or if its just me

That Walmart birdseed is the dirtiest I ever tried.

Frank seemed to like it though.

I live in the SE and went to four big stores, including WallyWorld, but none had decent wbs for mycology use.  Finally wound up buying a small bag from a nearby dollar store.  It looked like crap but worked OK.

Rye is getting close to being back in season & it should be pretty similarly priced to bird seed.

Whole foods always has super clean rye as well but it's more pricey $$

Swazey, dirty as in bacterial load or dirty as in dust, sticks, and random fingers?

Glad to hear I'm at least somewhat vindicated

ive used pennington finch seed from walmart for the last 12 years. it works perfect. its dirty but a little rinse goes a long way. it has cracked corn, bean chunks, red and white millet, rye berry, black sunflower seed, the occasional dried cherry, random rocks, sometimes wood or sticks, bird beak sharpening small bits of rock. just pour off the floaters when you prep it. none of the ingredients have ever caused me any issues. it may be that your not rinsing it enough.

it ends up costing me .37 cents a pound. cheapest grain i can find within 5 minutes. :thumbup:

im not sure how your prepping the grain but adding a  dash of pickling lime or gypsum during your prep always helps. are you soaking this grain or preparing it some other way?

when i prep mine i use
Fooman's Grain Tek

the only difference is that i put a dash of pickling lime in the water before i put the seed in and let it sit for 30 minutes. then pour off and strain for 20 minutes. then pc for an hour boom 2 hours and i have grain cooling.

look at how dirty this shit is. so dirty you can get a clean culture off of it. you can work with dirty, you just use some little tricks to clean it easier. the lime/gypsum gets the gunk off the grain. once you rinse it out after, its very clean.

Dirty like sludge after rinsing & soaking.

Yea Pennington brand is what I'm talking about!

I'm pretty anal about my grain though..

I use the organic stuff so I don't have to rinse it :shrug:

This isn't even Pennington's. It just says "economy mix" on it in a red and white bag. No brand name, nothing lol

I think I'm going to run oats for a while. They just seem cleaner and neater. Plus if I run out of food.....

I'm betting that economy mix is the shit at the bottom of the pile that has been rained on, left out in the sun, rats digging through it, etc so maybe I will fare better with oats.

Especially since they seem to prep on the drier side it can't hurt where bacteria is concerned.

The red & white bag economy mix at walmart is pennington. I've used it before, no issues.

No way. Then why do they have a Pennington bag the same size for x amount more next to it with the same ingredients?
