Casing Mix and Sterilization
    #21788757 - 06/10/15 03:03 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

I was wondering if anyone had any experience on how much of a difference it makes using a casing mixture vs. a layer of vermiculite for casing. All I have available to me is vermiculite right now and I'm not sure if its possible to find whatever I might need without ordering it online.

I am also not able to drop a couple hundred on a pressure cooker right and am trying to figure out the best alternative for sterilization. Apparently you can microwave or boil jars with some level of success?

Any constructive advice is appreciated. I'm trying to learn everything I need to know as quickly as I can so please bear with me.

from the sound of it I'd say your doing bulk, right? If so, you can sterilize grains using tyndalization. Google it, or search the forums for it. Ideally, you want a PC for grains, but I've personally had a lot of success with tyndalization.

As for the casing, I personally don't case. Bulk cube grows don't need it ime.

Pick up a used pressure cooker if you're on that tight of a budget. Or pick up a new 17-23 qt presto for about $70-80. Just keep in mind the rubber ring on presto cookers goes bad over time, so you may need to replace it on a used model. You wont have any good reliable results without a pressure cooker. The only things you can boil sterilize are inert clean items like tools and syringes.

Well with that method I could just start sterilizing the vermiculite I have unless someone tells me that I need a quality mixture. The reason I'm going with casing is because all the pictures I have seen with pint jars show only minimal growth at the top and I want more than a few grams each flush. Casing seemed like a better method to me because it increased the potential surface area. I have rarely seen anything growing out of the sides of the cakes so figured slicing the jar cakes into thirds and casing them would have a better yield. Of course I have never tried cultivating shrooms before now either.

My advice was for bulk, not cakes. Now, whichever method you use, tyndalization will work. Again, however, a PC is the best investment you can make in this hobby.

As for casing cakes, to the best of my knowledge it's basically required. I personally skipped cakes and went straight to bulk when I started in this hobby, so I have no first-hand knowledge of the tek. My info regarding cakes comes from over two years of hanging out/lurking on this site. Someone else with more hands-on experience with cakes should advise you further there.

Thank you so much. I've been looking online for awhile and havnt been able to find that large of a pressure cooker for less than 200+. I should be able to afford that no problem. This also means I can start making my own substrate for my next atempt. I was stupid and went with Midwest Grow Kits and was extremely disappointed. Right now I have bin with water and a fish tank heater and a tray to elevate my jars. I'm counting more on the success of my spawn bags but keeping my fingers crossed either way. Preparing for the worst case scenario that it Will be a complete just and I'll have to make my own substrate and go with different methods.
