Anyone ride dirt bikes? What bike should I get?

Ill be buying used.
I used to ride Honda growing up. I have many years experience on a bike and even a few years of racing experience.
I was thinking about getting a 2-stroke cuz I love the speed! But Im not against a 4-stroke..
Been looking at early 2000's Either a Honda CR125 or a Kawasaki KX125, I dont need a 250cc lol
Im a big fan of Honda but Kawasaki makes a good bike too and theres more Kawis in 2-stroke around my area so theyre a touch cheeper.
I would ineviteably be modding with pro parts. I have basic mechanic skills when it comes to bikes. Im confident I can fix most anything, especially with my dads help, we used to tear apart and rebuild my bikes as a kid.
The only thing I worry about is frequntly rebuilding the top end if I go for a 2-stroke as I know this is a common thing especially on race bikes. Having only ever ridden 4-strokes can someone chime in on how exensive and how often the top end may need to be changed if I go for a 2-stroke? Or is that mostly a racing problem that I may need not worry about?
Real interested in any help! Thanks guys.

Oh man I grew up with those things out in the valley of Alaska. Where it was like having a car I would ride 10+ miles a day. I had a Yamaha 80 then went to the 125 once I got tall enoough. And they do 60. So much god damn fun.
I remember one time riding with some friends that all had 4 wheelers I forgot my goggles. They were kicking up so much dust I hit one of the things that ground the electric poles. I did 2 summersaults in the air and landed on my back. Fucckkkk. Oh well. So much fun I'm sad I still don't have them.

I'd go four stroke just for ease of maintainence. And unless your a really small guy I'd go with a 250 or larger. A lot depends on where and how you ride. Like if you do a lot of tight woods riding an Enduro bike would suit you better and if you do alot of wide open areas a MX bike would have a slight edge.

All the Japanese bikes are similar enough it doesn't matter which brand you buy. Pick your color or go with whatever you get a deal on.
125s are fun to throw around and can still run for a couple years of moderate use between rebuilds, but they are also hard to ride in woods or on hills due to having to keep speed and RPMs up.
250s are still pretty fun, in some ways easier to ride because you don't have to ride them as hard, but they can also hurt you pretty fast if you get a little careless.
Four strokes are an entirely different animal. Much easier to ride and more forgiving, but not as easy to throw around and play on. Also a lot more difficult to work on. I know some of the MX four strokes need almost as much work as a two stroke, but it's more of a pain in the ass.
If it was me I'd get a 2 stroke 250 and be careful on it.
Of course these days I'm getting increasingly interested in some of the dual sport bikes. The ability to ride all over the place legally and then just hit some trails is a huge benefit to me. There are new 250 dual sports that perform pretty well as dirt bikes but you can still ride them to work, or the store, or around town. KTM also makes a bad ass 350 that I'd love to ride to and on the trails, but I'd feel kind of bad about abusing day to day on the road. Of course those bikes are probably newer and more expensive than you are interested in.
Yea, 2 stroke 250 is my vote. Just be careful.

God noo,
4 stroke for the win!! Esp. If your just starting out.

yeah, 2 strokes are more of a pain in the ass than they're worth IMO.
back in the day, it was a no brainer which way to go, but 4 strokes have come such a long way in the last 20 years.
I had close to zero maintainance on my 450 for the 5 years i rode it, and it never disappointed.
the powerband is so much easier to use too.
it's really a no brainer unless you want to do freestyle stuff. even then a lot of guys are going 4 stroke

Acidhead why would you go with KTM?
Yall pretty much convinced me to go with 4 stroke. I have been looking at the newer Honda 250 four strokes also. I'll be doing mostly trail riding and mudding. I will have access to motocross tracks so I'll be using those also but for the most part it'll be forests and quarries.
I weigh 160 soaking wet so I'm not a real big guy.

get a 4stroke 250cc.
unless you're going to be riding tiny narrow little goat trails, in which case i'd say get a 200.
but 125cc is tiny for an adult, unless you're very small framed. i was riding those as a tween

a crf250 would be perfect man.
ktm's are nice, but pricey, and more of a bitch to work on IME.
ive seen hydraulic clutches blow when we were out for a ride, and it seemed like my buddies bike was always breaking.
he might have had a lemon though, I know ktm makes really nice bikes

Yep exactly the same for me. Well actually I started riding my dad's 125cc that could do 60 at 11 I remember barely even being able to reach the ground I had to lean to one side or the other when stopped.

This thread makes me miss my bike
If I was gonna get another, and use it for strictly off road, that's exactly what I'd get.
However if/when I get another I'm gonna want it street legal so gonna most likely go with a WR250R. Wife tells me I'm not allowed to have a bike anymore but we'll see

2 strokes are much cheaper to maintain/rebuild than motocross/enduro 4 strokes (CRF/R/X, YZF/WRF, KXF, RMZ). If you are looking at a trail bike (ttr, xr, crf/f, etc) they are much more reliable than either and will run forever. You never know what you are getting when you buy a used 4 stroke either. You can go just as long if not longer on pistons in a 2 stroke than you can in the comparable 4 stroke. As far as the 4 strokes go yamahas are the most reliable, followed by honda then kawi then suzuki. (not talking about trail bikes here)
A 2 stroke top end wear parts consists of a piston. 4 stroke top end wear parts consists of piston, valves/springs, guides, valve seats, cam chain, and cam chain tensioner. There are more parts to fail on a 4 stroke and if something does fail it's gonna be very expensive.
On a 125 i think doing a top end every 50 hours is a good idea... you could probably go much longer but it's good insurance considering it's $150 bucks and takes an hour. That's engine hours... 50 hours is a lot more than it sounds like.
As far as buying a bike to mod... especially an old bike... don't do that. Modifying dirt bikes is expensive. I you buy a 2001 cr125 for $1500 and dump 2 grand in it it will still only be worth $1500. My advice would be take the money you planned to spend on upgrades and buy a newer bike, or find a bike that already has the mods you want.
I think you are right on track looking for a used 125... they are plenty fast, light, and easy to work on. I don't think there are really any "bad" 125's made since the late 90's get whatever you like and get a good deal on.
edit: just read the thread
CRF250R's are good bikes. If you are looking for a 250f I'd look at the yz250f's though since they are more reliable. You are really rolling the dice buying a used one (any 250f really) though. A lot of the time with older 4 strokes people will just sell them when they need engine work instead of spend half what the bike is worth on a rebuild. If you buy it and finds out the engine needs a rebuild you're gonna be looking at $500-$1000 bucks if you can do it yourself. If it blows up... could be upwards of 2 grand.
I still say get a 125 they are just as fast as 250F's, cheaper to maintain and rebuild, have more fun factor and lighter. 4 strokes are easier to be faster on if you ride motocross though.

A little off topic but how much would a nice 250cc bike cost used?
I have never even rode a dirt bike or motorcycle before, but I did a SHIT LOAD of trail biking in my teens and early 20s
I would love to pick up one this summer and have fun

A good one in good shape, somewhere around 1500-2000 would be a reasonable price to expect to pay.

Yeah around 2 grand around here for a mid 2000's model. I'd buy a smoker though no way i'd get a 250f that old unless I got it dirt cheap blown up or something. A 250 two stroke would most likely be a little (a lot) much for a newbie though. Even a 125 would be a handful if you've never ridden a dirt bike.
What type of riding are you lookin to do?

2 strokes are cheaper and easier to maintain, lighter, a lot more fun to ride and the powerband/sound never get old. youre gonna have problems with 4 strokes buying used that old

Yeah out here in the desert most people I know have been riding 250s and up since they were 14 or so. 450 4 stroke is a real nice base. Hondas and Yamahas are nice.

Heh I remember one of my neighbors' sons buying a 250cc dirtbike and they never had one before. He was only 15 and maybe like 120lbs
When he floored it the front lifted off the ground like 15 inches
