I am not a poacher.
If I saw a plant I thought could be what I wanted, I would not go home to research it. Instead, I would take the plant and find out once I was home.
My point, is if a kid thinks it might be san pedro and he wants to trip..hes grabbing your cactus, not looking at labels or looking it up.

Some people do that, some people come on here and post the picture first. You can tell when they're thinking about poaching it usually, because the picture will be at night, or from outside the fence, etc.
If you're ever bored, try going back through the thread list here in the Ethnobotanical Garden subforum and check out any thread that asks for a cactus I.D. You'll see what I mean

But you can't really say anything about it if you suspect it. Unless they say something a lil out of line.

lmao, good call. Night shots. Someone else's property. wow.
So people ask for ID before poaching. That sucks that people do that. I just ask. People say yes most of the time.

If that's the case.. then give them an alpha-numeric code tags.. buy some species active and some not, of similar type and shape (column cacti). And hope for the best. thieves are thieves. No matter what you do to deter people, they will surprise you with stupidity. The more elaborate your security system, the greater the chance of people going, Hmm there's probably something good here to steal. just don't label them with their botanical names, and then people besides you will go hmm.. I wonder if it is.. and that is the best deterant.
I agree with what others are saying here though. If someone is gonna take something from you, it doesn't matter if it is labled or not, they will just take it, and sort it out later...
Anyway, I gave my suggestion, .. and besides you can always grow indoors.
