Help!! Pinning a lot while not fully colonized
    #21787342 - 06/10/15 08:41 AM (8 years, 7 months ago)

I currently have 2 jars that are about 95% colonized and they are growing very large pins. I'm not sure if I should dunk and fruit them or let them fully colonize or just  fruit them early. Will it kill the pins growing if I dunk them? And will the pins being squished against the jar  die because they're being squished?

I'm not sure if the squishing will kill them, but the dunking won't.

So should I take the cakes out and put In sgfc even tho it's only like 95 percent colonized, there is still a tiny amount of dirt on the bottom of the jar not colonized by mycelium, so should I dunk the jars, wait longer, or just put them in sgfc after birth?

Preferably first post pics. That's a good place to start.

Some might rinse the spot off then dunk and roll and others might just leave them in the jars for further colonization. We don't know until you post pics.

Also don't bump your thread after 17 minutes. 24 hours is the protocol.

Top left where your username is, there's a "pics" link up there. Click it and click upload pics, and follow the steps. Copy and paste the url here after uploading.

It's cool I didn't mean to sound rude. Just saying there's lots of people waiting for responses to their threads, and it's unfair to flood the boards, not giving a chance for the other questions getting answered.

I'd just let it keep colonizing until finished, then dunk and roll with those pins still. The spot is bacterial. You would like to keep it just bacterial. It'll colonize over it and still fruit fine. You don't want other stuff getting in there though like trich, which is why I'd say keep on colonizing.

The spot is bacterial? :frown: so are you saying its contaminated :,( ? And I don't have any vermiculite so I can't roll I can only dunk :frown:

In vitro pins turn out oddly shaped sometimes but they won't be squished or die. As long as the mycelium is still progressing I would just leave it be until full colonization.

Pinning before full colonization often happens to me when I use the regular-mouth 1/2-pint jars. Cakes from wide-mouth jars colonize so much better- it's totally worth the extra $$ or CAD or drachmas whatever to buy new jars IMHO.

In the mean time, I'd still let the cakes go to 100% colonization before birthing. The pins will likely trap the cake when you birth them. If that happens just run a butter knife carefully between the jar and the cake/pins. They'll bruise but continue to grow. Dunk & roll as usual, even over the pins, it won't hurt them.

On the plus side, you'll probably be able to harvest some nice (albeit funky-shaped) shrooms within a couple days after birthing.
