Fairly constant "cracking" of my knee joints

See I injured my knees badly 3 years ago in a viscous whitewater accident that almost cost me my life, I'm 21 right now. I didn't go to the doctors after I started walking again, which in retrospect was terrible idea but now years later VERY often when I stand up from a chair or couch the joints in my knees make a crunching cracking sounds along with pain and discomfort. I'm wondering if this is common with people who don't excersise much because I don't do that. However I think either way I need scans for these things and I will see a doctor.
Anyone else have these kinds of knee problems,if so what did it turn out to be?

Yeah my knees crack like a knuckle sometimes when I crouch down or stand up. A little discomfort when they do crack but always feels better afterwards. I'm old though so I blame it on age. Every now and then my elbows crack too.

My ankles , Knees and shins are fucking tore up from skating, I swear I have the knees of a 30 year old man in my twenties, it sucks balls.
I had the same symptoms as OP when I broke my leg, (damn near kicked myself in the face my leg broke so bad, at the knee, it got bent the wrong way, hyper extended like a mother fucker)
After months and months of physical therapy it went away, FINALLY.

If I'm laying on my back with legs in a ^ shape with feet flat on the surface, and try to lift my legs up parallel to the grounds, my knees will crack too. No pain or discomfort but it doesn't feel right do I try to avoid it as much as possible. I also try to minimise the stress on my legs too. Maybe go see a physiotherapist and see if they have anything of benefit they can offer to help you with??

Kinesiology tape is what my physical therapist did on my knee, which was a god send, worked better than any knee brace I had worn at the time, that I had to leave on for the first few weeks and get changed everyday, you can't really tape it up yourself though, since the specific patterns you tape matter a whole fuck of a lot like so. I had this pattern on my knee.
When my dad has his knee surgeries he had a different pattern I can't find on the internet. There's also the rubber bands, and all the exercises and stretches they'll give you, plus massages and stretches that we're wonderful as well.
It wouldn't be a bad idea to get it checked out, before it gets worse. It's not going to get any better if you ignore it.

To me,, when i hear cracking in joints i think bone spurs. They happen more often than we realize, imo. The body likes to use this as a tool to create stability in the region. During movement they usually crack off unless it's too bad. Im not a doctor, they just call me M.D.
That tape stuff seems like they're going for the same thing: stability, but it's likely more focused on fascia than muscle. fascia connects everything

That's interesting, I sure don't think it's normal for a 21 year old.I really should get this checked out before I lose my health insurance or else I don't think I will ever know.

Did you used to play sports or do a lot of running or something? Or maybe suffered some injuries? Just sounds like wear and tare to be honest. Aches and pains start to happen as you get older. Ya only get one body so look after it

I can crack most of the joints in my body (fingers/knuckles, toes, knees, ankles, wrists, elbows, neck, back, shoulder hips will even sometimes do it). My knees require a special move to do it (stand on one leg, firmly plant foot and twist my upper body and let the momentum do it). They hurt unless I do it, and if I just don't for whatever reason pretty regularly, they'll do it on their own. It is kinda painful when it happens on it's own. I've never thought anything was wrong.
Is it the same kind of feeling you get when you crack your fingers/knuckles? If so, try to learn to crack your knees, and then do it regularly and see if it's still a problem. That's just based on my experience though so take it with a grain of salt.

I only had the whitewater injury with my knees. I didn't play a whole lot sports or anything of that nature. It's possible I got It through street fighting but I would've noticed a major injury at least the days after.
See I can to I love cracking my fingers knuckles, back and neck but this cracking of the knees just plain hurts. Absolutely no relief in it.

Toes and knees always hurt for me at first. I got used to it after awhile. I never would have continued doing it except I noticed that when I did, the long term relief was extended. Meaning I'd go much longer without it just doing it on it's own (which was quite painful). Now it doesn't bother me at all to do it. My knees now almost never crack on their own. I always do it before they have the opportunity, just like my knuckles and stuff I can sense the pressure and that they're "primed" and ready for it.
Elbow is the hardest to do. Only way I know to do those is fling my arm out while trying to push the elbow in. If it's not ready to pop, that is still painful.

That's interesting I thought if my knees naturally cracked it would've started much earlier then this. Also cracking of joints had never been painful for me. I will take your experience into consideration though and won't jump to the conclusion of the old whitewater injury.

OP are your knees cracking or grinding? This is important because Cracking is pretty normal simple use of the joint should aleiviate this. On the otherhand if your knee feels like you're using a rusty ratchet then it is more serious, Bone on bone contact. Get it checked out. I've injured my knees numerous times and luckilly simple exercise gets them back to normal. Find a GOOD !!!! Sports medicine guy to check it out. If you go to someone who wants to shoot you up with prednisone on the first visit cross them off the list.
