what is the good life?

So.. this guy I know from high school.. my friend and I ran into him a few years ago. Right after he graduated he went to a technical college and when we saw him was ready to go on salary and become a drone. I figured he would feel good because he succeeded in doing what he thought was the right thing to do his whole life, but my friend thought that he'd be unhappy just the same.
I don't know which is true.

If you can't read his mind or if you don't talk to him, I guess you won't find out how happy he'll be. I think he'll probably start wondering what he's been working towards, one day.

I have a hard time calling someone a "drone" simply because he went to work for a company and becomes a salaried worker. Maybe he's more comfortable with that.
What's the alternative to becoming a drone?

Well, that's what I do, but not everyone is cut out for that. I don't even know if I'm cut out for it, but I do know for sure I'd get fired if I worked for someone else because I'd inevitably be telling someone or another to eff themselves.
I know one person, and yes, only one, but he is happy to work for someone else because it frees him up to do other things. He puts in his 9 to 5 because he just wants to earn enough money to support his lifestyle. He's not interested in working for himself. But the things he does during his off-hours are what make him happy.

the good life is living on a farm and/or community, where the barter system is the only form of currency, everyone grows and raises their own food and you play music and eat homegrown food and smoke homegrown weed all day while sipping on your homegrown mushroom tea, and doing whatever the hell you feel like doing, whenever the hell you feel like doing it.

Well, some of us are happy getting up to the alarm clock. YOU have to find what is right for YOU. I get up to the alarm clock, and I pay my dues to society, in order to do WHAT I LOVE TO DO. What I love to do means I have to play the game.
Some of us find things to do that in order to do them, we don't have to play the game. I, personally, will play the game to do what I love, or I can't do it.

Oh no Frog! You're a mindless drone!
You work for 'the man' and conform just to conform. Can't you see that your life would be much better if you paid for your food with food that you had produced yourself?
We should all stop doing what we do and study english, because that's not what 'the man' wants us to do. We could all be poets, and do drugs all the time. It sounds like the perfect society.

No, you missed my point. I do what I love to do. Doing what I love to do means that for part of that, I have to play by the rules. I will play by the rules, partly, in order to do what I love to do.
We still live in a society, buckwheat. Not all of us can paint and hang our pictures and hope someone buys them. Shit, some of us can't paint.

Um, yeah. That's what I meant. We can't all study english, be poets and do drugs all the time.
I should have been clearer though, it wasn't whack enough compared to all the 'good life' fantasies people have given so far.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. That's MY perception of ONE of the many ways to live the good life. Subjective at best. If going to the moon or curing diseases is what you feel like doing.. then do it. For me, the good life means not reporting to "the man" everyday, to work 10 hours for the "almighty dollar" so you can "support the system" and be a "good citizen/consumer" It means living on your own, growing your own food, being independent. Again, this is my vision, it doesn't have to be anyone elses. The good life is subjective. Everyone is different.

Are you willing to give up philosophy for that?
Animals live the "good life." They let nature/evolution/divine plan (i dunno, guide?) shape their future. They don't have shopping malls and Hitler.
but they dont have philosophy either.

why would I have to give up philosophy.. to live in harmony with nature? I wouldn't completely isolate myself from civilized society.. I would likely have electricity..running water.. internet.. just no normal 9-5

well, not that you would have to give up philosophy. Obviously you'll never be able to trade in your self awareness (conscience or whatever it was that that entire episode of st:tng was devoted to finding out if Data had "It") for the blissful ignorance of animality.
but if you got to choose your next encarnation, would you want another human ego?
