ID Request Please, Melbourne, Australia
    #21786244 - 06/09/15 11:39 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

Habitat:
Moist woodchips near and under different trees. Inner north Melbourne suburb.

Gills:

Appear light brown, some a darker brown & somw with bluish blackish tinge looking to possibly be from bruising/damage.

Stem:
Whitish, some look to have a bluish blackish tinge.

Cap:

Convex and wavy. Light brown, some a fresh slimy light brown looking colour, some lighter brown, dry and not so fresh looking.

Spore print color: ??

Bruising:
Appear to have bruised a bluish blackish colour on caps, gills and stems.

Other information:
A number of these have damaged caps - some caps appear to have been eaten by something. Anyone with knowledge of this know what may have caused this, insects, bacteria, fungus?

And could this create risks in consumption for what looks like P. subaeuroginosa?

Also does anyone know if the lighter brown dry unfresh looking caps are likely to be the same as the fresh looking ones? Are these just older mushrooms? with age/weather conditions causing this?

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

Yes, that is what my question is suggesting. As the damage to the caps looks like it has been caused by something eating them, this suggests that they probably have been eaten by something.

As a trusted identifier do you have any knowledge as to what may have caused this damage?

Yeah probably a slug or something. Nothing to worry about.

Bugs or insects, sometimes even small animals.

If its the former, nothing to worry about, they are edible and not harmful to you. If worried, dry out the shrooms before ingesting or quickly wash them through a bowl of water if eating fresh (this doesn't usually get rid of all of them though)

Another thing you can consider doing if you are worried about mistakenly eating bugs/slugs, is cutting the shroom up into very small pieces. I tend to avoid washing them (although im sure a quick wash as suggested will have little to no effect on potency). When they are cut nice and small and you wipe them down individually before consuming, the chance of eating a bug is very slim. Of course I just pop them straight in after a quick wipe, but I am a bit of a caveman like that :crazy2:
