Short synth recording I made

Would appreciate some feedback, I tried last night and go nothing
Will be trying to record some more stuff today so I would appreciate hearing what people think.
My favorite part of music is improv so I have been having trouble trying to write a song. I may just record more snippets of improv
Or work on more cool trippy sounds like the clavi auto wah delay combo, if interested I could go into detail about the effects I use.
Clavi is just the synth setting I was using and an auto wah + delay are just 2 of the 3 or 4+ effects I was using to get that sound.

Needs a lot of work. The composition (or lack thereof) is rambling and incomprehensible. Production wise, while I like what you are going for, the sound is awfully thin. I would thicken it up. It honestly sounds like you got high as fuck and banged some shit out that sounded cool at the time without going back to listen to it again. Sorry to rain on your parade.

Improv is fun, but the time and knowledge needed to create a full composition shows wisdom and patience.
Considering the melody being played, I think the synth is a little too whimsical. A square wave with less Q on the attack would be more appropriate.

It is a minute long noodle there is no production, it is just a recording of me playing synth.
Noodling generally is "rambly" but I am not sure what you mean by incomprehensible? Are you saying it needs to be louder?
As for the "thickness", once again it was a minute long noodling. I am not sure what kind of "thickness" or production you would expect from that...
I actually have listened to it a couple times and have no issues with it, I realized it could have been louder.
You are not "raining on my parade" and your feedback is not the most useful.
If it was a song I composed I might understand why it would come across as under produced and thin, etc but it is a short noodling.
Acaterpillar, yeah compositions do take a lot of patience, and practice. I am just starting to get into it and know I have a long long way to go.
I wasn't even trying to compose anything though it was just some noodly improv. What do you mean by more appropriate?
Music is a pretty open art form so I try not to confine it to terms like that. The Q comment is probably becouse I actually had two autowahs going for extra modulation.
I know it sounds pretty funny/ weird but I enjoy experimenting with sounds.

I find that most people have little to no interest in listening to a brief noodle. It is a small piece that when added together with synonymous other noodles can eventually create a package that is captivating/enticing, at that point it becomes with the time to experience. But a synth noodle is like mental masturbation, it sounds good to the creator because you got to play god and manifest something from the nothingness, the value and allure remains in that realm until it gets put into a package of experience.
The one exception to this is modular jams.

I suggested a square wave because square waves hit disharmonic frequencies and the melody you are playing is very playful and harmonic. It would provide some balance to the tune; and keep it from seeming too 'childish', so to speak.
Attack in reference to ADSR. Q is a term in music which refers to the modulation applied to the attack.

A lot of those runs in the original noodle sound like simple triads, and are comparable to modal and scale exercises I was taught back in school.

That is some better feedback.
You are definitely right, I just figured some people might appreciate some some weird synth noodling especially since it was so short.
I am trying to start getting into composing stuff but I am very picky and know it will take awhile before I have anything I feel is worth sharing.
Modular synths are pretty ridiculously expensive.
I know what attack and Q mean, I was just saying there was more modulation going on than just an auto wah.
I forget which type of wave is set on that clavi patch but I like out how it sounds over a square for auto wah purposes. Sounds more funky to me.
Squares I prefer for simpler lead patches. Also I have never taken keyboard lessons so if my playing sounds like school exercises at least I am getting somewhere

If you want to take your production further, I suggest starting with simple waves like saw, square, and triangles. If there is a patch you like (like the [clavinet?] you referred to) then do your best to learn how to mimic that patch with simple waves.
It's helpful to know that saw waves only hit harmonic frequancies, and squares hit disharmonic.
Music is all about tension and release.
If there is no tension (like in the original noodle), then there is no space to provide release; which is what gives your listeners a satisfying reward for listening to your piece.

I have spent a decent amount of time doing patch editing but the synth I am using does not have a good editing set up and it is time intensive.
So I have just been working on my favorite sounds and creating versions of those, for instance I have a low and high piano, chorus piano, low and high strings and low and high orchestra strings, choir, square lead, and some other random ones. I just try to improve upon those patches over time as I think of improvements. If editing was easier I would spend more time on it.
I have tried using midi to download patches and edit them etc all on my computer but have not been able to get it to work.
I know what you mean about the tension and release though, I was just trying to get a quick sample of that sound down though so it was just full noodle

well in that case: it's not "bad", just a tad bit predictable. And predictable is a tad boring.

I never said it was "good" anyways and I don't even think music should be looked at in terms of good and bad.
Of course some of the crap out there is definitely bad, and I wouldn't even really call my little synth noodle music anyways. More like a sample or something.
Predictable can be boring but a lot of my favorite music is just so groovy you can feel where it is going the majority of the time.
That is actually one of my favorite parts of music, "getting into the groove"

2014 man! it's a remake of a classic rack mount Bass Station 1 that was used a ton in DnB and Trance. Very happy with it. I think they are around $500. 2014 was the year for $500 or less synths, there were like 4-5 of them that all came out.
I have have a ms-20mini, which is also a remake of a classic 1979 synth, but reconstructed as close to original as possible.

What synth are you using?

Toasty as heck, and gets semi-near 303 status because the "acid" filter is a transistor network (just like the rare 303)

That thing looks sweet too!
I had a feeling it might not literally be vintage but it has the oldschool look. Remakes are always nice when they are done well.
I have seen some crazy vintage pedal clones on ebay in pretty low price ranges.
I am using a Roland Jjx-8p, I really like it besides it lack of ease with editing...

Has some really smooth orchestral string sounds but also pretty gritty analog leads, pretty much all the stuff I was looking for in a synth.
Besides editing if I manage to midi it right though it won't matter and I will probably mod it over time anyways.
