How do you Dry Your WBS before sterilizing?

I recently got into WBS and have been using docs 34 tek. I'm following everything except after the simmer I dry my WBS outside spread out think on a cheesecloth. Is letting them dry for an hour in the mild sun too much? None of the teks I have found really explain how much to dry....and how much is too much? With WBS in the past my jars looked too wet. thanks in advance

Congratz on your transition to WBS. As long as the grains are actually hydrated then drying the outside of them shouldn't cause a problem. I would shake/mix them up every 10-15 minutes to help distribute the moisture on the outsides of the grains while you are drying them. You will know that they are dry enough when you can place them on a piece of toilet paper for 5-10 secs without them leaving a wet mark. You should look up RR's sample video on grain prep, because I believe he explains drying them very well.

Ooo question...after I have dried my WBS and load them into my jars... how long can I keep them in jar before sterlizing? Can I wait a day or 2, or a week and probably still have success? And what about holding off inoculation post sterilization...whats the time frame?

You should leave as little time in between loading the jars and sterilizing them. Bacteria is still growing in that jar and will try to colonize it as fast as possible. The longest I would go is around 24 hours but that is just my opinion. If you sterilize them and wait a few days to inoculate you should be fine. But beware, if you wait too long they will start to dry out which will in turn cause the mycelium the colonize the WBS at a slower rate.

I also agree with the 24 hours before sterilization. I think a big problem as well would be the possibility of sprouting which I've had that happen a couple times. Personally I lay my WBS on a towel in a front of a fan and mix it up every 10-20 minutes till it no longer sticks to my hand when I grab a big handful. Best of luck in your WBS adventures. I love the stuff. and also after I take them out of the PC there is always seemingly excessive/pooled moisture in the jar. A shake every 12/24 hours allows them to reabsorb the moisture and I've had no problems inoculating after that

I do something similar to what Archenemy does. After I drain my grains in a wire catch thing I lay my boiled grain out on newspaper which I spread out on a large table with a fan blowing on them. After about 30 minutes they are always good to go. Once they are dry enough to pass the toilet paper test I immediately load them into my jars and PC sterilize them. After sterilization I generally open the PC as close to the point that the PC has returned to atmospheric pressure (the gauge reaches zero) and remove the jars from the PC. Then I wait until the jars are cool enough to hold the jars to the inside of my arm without burning me. Once the jars are this cool I noc them up. Every now and then depending on when I started sterilization, what time it is, and what time I have to be awake the next morning I might go to bed and then noc the jars up the next day. You do not want to give much time between sterilization and inoculation. The idea is to sterilize the grains and then to noc them up ASAP. This gives the mycelium it's best fighting chance against anything that might have not been killed in the PC process.
