What's in your garden this year?

I started mine late due to urgent landscaping. But here are some pics of my garden
Alright, pic 1: from farthest to closest
- San Marzano Tomatoes - Sweet cherry tomatoes - English cucumbers

______________________________________________________________________
Pic 2: Farthest to closest
- 2 bell peppers plant - 2 orange bell peppers - Red cabbage - Beefsteak tomatoes (bought by mistake but I kept them, I don't like big juicy tomatoes
The hole between the peppers and cabbage is going to be lettuce but for some reason every garden center is sold out

_______________________________________________________________________
Pic 3: Farthest to closest
- Basil - Dill - Origano - Sage - Cilantro - Parsley - Chive - Estragon
All the holes in between the plants contain seeds of rasihes, carrots, green onions and maybe something else I forgot

_______________________________________________________________________
Here's my back yard while I'm at it

I didn't start one because when it was time to start one up I was working overnight shifts. Now I wish I would've.
Only thing I got growing this year is Bhut Jolokia. Started them pretty late, too. Hoping to get one good harvest out of them.
Well summer plants anyways. I'll probably do some fall planting.

I had to google that thing.
Chili peppers essentially.
If it came up as a weird veggie I would have told you "Can't you grow tomatoes like anyone else?"

It's a nuclear pepper. 5+ times hotter than a Habanero.
Last year someone insulted the peppers I grew by saying they weren't even hot, so I'm going to get back at him . Plus I've always wanted to try them.
And no I can't grow tomatoes unfortunately. My area seems to be plagued with stink bugs and they absolutely destroy any chance of a harvest. When they suck the juice out of a tomato, even as little babies they inject something into them that basically renders the tomato inedible.

your soil is so dark. my word.
I have some weird heirloom cukes and carrots, they're weird shapes/color I forget the specifics, then a couple rows of swiss chard. I decided to aim small this year, and so far that has proven to be a good idea since I'm actually weeding it for once. I also have 2 tomato plants someone gave me thrown in there.

Everyone saw my orgasmic levels of tomatoes. Bell peppers. Trinidad scorpions jalapeños.
I don't have much room for a garden. I have a decent sized yard but one of my roommates has a son so I can't feel right taking the yard over.
Luckily he has joint custody but I secretly hope the kid gets into my scorpion peppers because that'd be fucking hilarious.
I hate bell peppers but I grow them for my roommates and general cooking. I don't personally like them but I'll eat them if they're mixed in. It's like all the shitty parts of a pepper and nothing good. Dull bitter and no spice.
I wish I had my own yard to compost and garden but such is life.
I have a pool so can't bitch. The benefits of renting a house and not an apt.

They'll still flower when the weather makes them, but If you want the poppies for the pods they'd be tiny.
I'm not sure on alkaloid content when they're premature either but I'd imagine not good.
Poppies are really finicky though from what I've been told.

How are you going to have lights in your fridge? Just curious.
Come to think of it actually, poppies grow from Fall to Fall in normal conditions don't they? Or is that not how they grow in the frozen northern tundra?
After thinking about I'd I'd most likely say no, actually, but I don't know enough and have never grown them personally. Always wanted to though.
If you have a bunch of seeds, try it and let us know. If you're in short supply, then I would wait.

Does anyone know much about avocados? I bought a couple avocados a few weeks ago, hated them, but decided to try growing something out of the seed. I did the toothpicks and water thing but how long usually until they sprout from the bottom? They seem properly cracked on top and everything but the bottom hasn't started popping open yet and it's been atleast 3 weeks. Toss them or wait?

Avocado's are almost impossible to cultivate from Avacado fruits from a store, the seeds are only viable for a few weeks after harvest from what I understand. So unless you get some super fresh ones they don't grow.
I have never ever been able to cultivate from seed. We have an avacodo tree I planted at my parents house but They take 8-12 years to fruit from my understanding, no idea how old the sapling was, but I don't think it'll fruit anytime soon.

Ah okay. That's kind of what I figured but I thought it was worth a shot. Most fruit from the store has shit seeds. Wouldn't want us being self reliant eh?
I'll give them a little while longer. Maybe a week. I didn't really want fruits as much as I wanted an uncommon plant. Thanks none the less.

Oh yeah for sure, always worth a shot. I still try every avacado stone I get JUST incase, because if you manage to grow a sapling, depending on how old it is and where you live can be 20-50 dollars.
20-50 bucks for some patience, dirt, and water.

Well it's not just that they don't want us using their product for seed. Good seeds come from plant ripened fruits. Most the stuff you buy in the grocery store is picked premature and artificially ripened.

Poppies need cool temps to germinate... So I just went and got all my old seeds out from various trades here a few years ago... Got paper towel wet and layed it in Tupperware and spread the seeds out and labeled em.
Hoping the paper towel and cold fridge can make them germinate and then try to transplant the sprouts in to soil and hope the season has enough time left...
I just did... Persian white Gigantium Izmir afghan(white?) Some called Black Current Fizz A mix labeled Turkish and Taz Mammoth Gigantium Hot pink Wizi psmi
They're all labeled from whoever I was trading with then..
Anybody know what those acronyms stand for?

I know they need cool Temps to germ, I mentioned that on second thought, I didn't think they'd be ready in time because you have to plant them in fall from what I understand. Also you said sprout in fridge not germinate and that confoosed me.
But I think that's places that don't have a northern winter where you plant in fall. A WI winter has gotta rape any plant to destruction.
Taz is Tasmanian. No idea what fizz is though. Wizis psmi is fun to say but alas I do not know that one either.

We still have 4 months of possible growing time yet.. Hoping they're able to make it...
Here, you're supposed to plant in early spring, but Idk if that's because of the cool temps to germinate, or that they take the whole growing season to mature.

Yeah I don't know bro. Take everything I said with a grain of salt. I've done a lot of reading on growing because I've always wanted too, but I haven't put the effort into it because I heard most of the widely available seeds have shit for potency.

Well these are decent seeds I assume since they're not the grocery store kind...
I asked the kind folks in the ethobotanical garden forum just now.. We'll see what they say..
Nothing to lose on my end by trying... Figured I'd give it a shot...
They'll need to be planted elsewhere, though, like my others.. For safety

Isn't growing them legal, but scoring them illegal? You can just have pod tea, but if you wanna smoke the opium yeah def keep em safe.
If you figure out what the fuck a Wismi Psmi is let me know because I'm so fucking intrigued by that name.

Even if it's just placing the sprout in to soil?
I know they don't do well once they're actually growing.. But damn
Hopefully the sheer amount I used may allow me to beat the odds, no?

I have never seen a poppy transplant that worked well, but I am not that experienced with them.
Doesn't hurt to try though.
Anyway, give it a shot, keep us posted. You might have great luck with your transplant, maybe come up with a new tek for it, keep moving forward ya dig.

No pun intended?
I just wanna get the most germinations possible... I suppose I could put em in dirt cups in biodegradable planting cups in the fridge and then do em that way..

Wow, that's a big garden. I wish my yard was big enough to accomodate a garden like that.

I love gardening. It feels kind of feminine to me but I still love it. Been doing gardens ever since I was about 7.
Currently growing some habeneros, already stressing them out for more heat
Also growing some green onions, lettuce, beans (snow peas), and varius herbs (probably 15 different types)
I have a TON of different flowers and some foliage species as well
And I also have poison dart frogs, which my current 100 gallon enclosure has at least 40 different species of plants ranging from ficus sp to orchids to bromeliads to pilea.
