Who here meditates daily?

Due to my current health issues and being basically couch locked alllll day, I decided id like to start meditating.
I need something to keep my spirits high and get me through the healing process.
I am not using any drugs at all right now, I might smoke a few dabs of shatter oil every 2-3 days, and might take some thc tincture every other day. But that is entirely it.
Im super stressed and I feel like meditation may help me stay positive plus relieve my stress, and maybe help me figure few things out also.
Thing is I have no idea how to go about this.
Any advice on meditation techniques and whatnot? I have all the time in the world...

The voice in this video is beyond creepy and distracting but I picked it because it's pretty short and easy to follow.
There is a lot of walk through meditation videos on youtube, I do it daily and taught myself so I probably don't have it right and wouldn't be able to explain it to you properly.

I have both of those at my disposal.
Unfortunatly I need to stay in a reclined position with my feet up, does that matter? I can not for the life of me sit cross legged.

No, any position you feel comfortable staying in will work. Lay down, stand up, reclined back, as long as you can comfortably sit that way for a certain amount of time it works the same.
The whole point of positioning is so that you don't become uncomfortable and therefore distracted because you are uncomfortable. The main reason for the lotus position is because it promotes good posture while also meditating. I believe that's why the lotus position is so common for this anyway because everyone I've talked to said it doesn't matter how you're sitting as long as you're comfortable, yet when you think of meditation you tend to think of people sitting like that while doing it.
Laying down isn't recommended though because it's easy to fall asleep.

Aye, I try to each morning and night.
The key is no key. It is non-technique.
The Art of meditation.
Recognize the natural silence of your own Self. Silence is not a behavior. Silence is not a practice. It is the natural perfume of being. Trying to be still is not stillness. Find that stillness inside, which simply Is. There is no one to practice it. It can only be recognized. It is here. It is not hiding. It is not hurried. Simply stop identifying with the past, future, present or with any self image. Be open to being nothing. No thing. So that internally you are simply like a space. But this is not an inert space, but a space full of aliveness. Still don't define yourself as aliveness. Don't define yourself at all. Simply remain in natural self-awareness.

I go in isolation float tanks every other week. It's like super meditation because anywhere else your still always somewhat distracted by sensory input. You'd have to wait until your wounds heal because the salt water would sting like a bitch. Floating is an expensive activity at $40 for 2 hours but we'll worth it IMO. I feel better for weeks after a simple two hour float\meditate session.

I have been every other day or so , but I have open access to horizontal and vertical tanks, so I am super grateful.

I used to meditate every day but lately it's only been a few times a week...living in georgia I get some strange looks from people when they find out I meditate.
I love how people judge things they've never tried so harshly, makes me laugh.
Zombi3 I have a platform bed I like to meditate on but I actually lean back a little against the wall because sitting for so long hurts my back now with the pregnancy....I used to sit but trying both I can say from experience it makes no difference. I wish I could go outside but I can't right now so I just open the windows so I can feel the breeze and hear the birds (that's a little different but I'll be back outside soon)

Hey man, I hope your health will get better soon.
About meditating, do what you can do that makes you feel better.
Fuck positions! I've been trying various postures for many years never finding any good one, these days I just sit with a straight back on my knees on a large cushion. When your feet get better I bet you can find a straight-back way of sitting too. These days, just go with any way of being that you can manage.
It is also a matter of finding something that fits you. When searching for a way you may come across many different traditions and such. I have deep respect for people's convictions but I am agnostic myself and many religious traditions I think tend to overload their meditative practices with embellishments that really distract me from practicing the core. Confusing. As I said I am an agnostic so I am neither theist nor atheist (I respect both positions) but here is in fact an atheist (he doesn't like being called an atheist though!) doing a guided meditation (29:38 - 37:00). Very pure and simple (he is a seasoned meditator himself):
I think he does an excellent job of teaching pure meditation except at one place where he talks about some sort of cloud feeling, I don't get that but never mind, if you find this good, go with it on a regular schedule if you can.
Very good luck and get better soon!
(Oh and expect that meditation may not feel the way you would want it to! Just hang in there, benefits will come.)
Kind regards Johnny

Those are such ghetto blind folds, that seems like a vertical one wouldn't be as good, since it's not enclosed where the air temp isnt the same as body temp like in a lay down tank. so the face would have stimuli.
Also your ears aren't in the water so you should get some ear plugs as well.
I floated on Ket once and that was meh. It didn't feel any different than regular ket but I k holed on a much smaller dose.
Hopped out and sniffed a real khole dose and laid back in and still meh. Thought it would be the greatest hole ever but nah. I do it sober sometimes but If I'm spending that much money to float, I like to be fucked up for it.
I prefer to meditate like this though, instead of a normal lotus, because I feel it stretches out my legs more, so my legs don't feel sluggish after from being pretzeled in a lotus. I don't use the little board this guy has it's just the only picture I can find, I just sit back on my knees. So the back of my thigh touches my calf. Uncomfortable at first for most people, but I always stretch hardcore before I skate so my legs are pretty nimble.

I bet if you did an opiate and nodded out in a tank that'd be the bees fucking knees as far as feelsgoodman.
If you could keep from passing out, it wouldn't be spiritual for fuck all though.
It's really fun on hallucinogens since you have no stimuli you create ALL the stimuli you feel/see/hear and it's fucking beautiful.
I can barely float for an hour on psychs because I get so fucking excited and want to run around and frolic.

The vertical tanks are IMO better for meditation. A vertical spine is a key element to alert attention. Where horizontal is better for physical recuperation, and able to enter into Delta. The guy I have been floating with in the vertical tanks has floated more than any other human, alive or dead. More than the people who started the first float brand. (Glenn and Lee Perry, of which whom I will be interviewing in a podcast in T- 15 minutes )
I can last WAY longer in a vertical tank. Whereas I have floated 3 hours or so horizontally, I floated for over 6 vertically.
Yes it is a ghetto "blind fold", we call them mindfolds. blacked out ski masks actually work best because they are comfortable and allow space for your eyelashes to freely move.
Also, nodding in a tank is also not a good idea. one of the two instances of deaths while floating was opiate related.
minor MXE doses has proven pretty lovely though.

He's floated more than that nigga named Crash or whatever? That dude's famous as shit and his tanks are top of the line.. I gotta imagine he's floated more..
I don't think those deaths are completely the opiates fault, you gotta be retarded to drown in the like, 6-12 inches of water in most tanks. But yeah I guess it's still a pretty bad Idea, I'd imagine it would feel amazing though.
See I don't like to have Alert Attention when I float, I like to calm my mind, and let any thoughts and Idea's flow in naturally. I don't use the tank to like, Focus on shit, but I know you use the tanks for music so having an alert attention would be good so you can focus on musical thoughts. I like to just let my mind visuals and think about whatever comes to mind. Usually I start to visualize celestial bodies as I slowly float through them like my own lazy river through the universe.
But Tomato, Potato, as they say Also don't float on empty stomach, or full stomach, or anything that can potentially take away from your float for noobs.

Oh yeah, way more than Crash. Chris floats literally every day, built his first tank in 1976 and has been floating (almost) daily since then. Crash, what a guy, whenever someone has brought up that name it is always followed by how crazy he is, or controversy of some sort, a big argument broke out last conference we had because he was trying to make standards for the whole industry himself without regard to any other opinion.
I'm def not hating on horizontal conventional tanks, I have been working for a float center for 4 years. they are all great, all shapes and sizes.

Seems to be very very very dependent on personal preference because of how intimate and personal a float is.

Most definitely. Some people will only float if there is a light to turn on, or a way to know where they are. Some people like the cocoon/womb feeling and dislike openness.

Focus on the space between thoughts. Or the space between you and an object in the room. Or if you hear a sound, focus on the space between that sound and the next one.
It's all about the space between imo

Yeah I don't think being claustrophobic would matter, maybe at first but once you settle in you don't know you're in a small tank. You'll be wherever your mind takes you.

OP said: I'm claustrophobic
Then meditate and just watch your feelings and thoughts and you'll see that the claustrophobia will start to become smaller and smaller, and then, it will be gone!
Of course you need to, be gentle. If you get a panic attack (or similar) go easier on yourself. Don't shut yourself in or shut the hatch for a short time, you know day 1: 1 second, day 2: 2 seconds, day 3: 5 seconds, and work yourself up.
However, you might not wanna focus on claustrophobia right now, maybe you should just get some nice guided meditation that gets you to relax. (Given your situation - I read about your situation in the other thread.)
Good luck.
Kind regards Johnny

You'd be a great instructor, very well put.

I do. Just start with relaxation if you are new to it, then focus on your breath. Don't let thoughts carry you away, keep coming back to the breath.

I don't meditate. I think a lot though. That's what I consider to be meditation.

And what about 2C-B meditation?
"Some compounds may be more suitable for enhancing meditation practice than are others. I personally have had substantial experience with the phenethylamines, outstanding examples of which are 2C-T-2, 2C-T-7, and 2C-B; the synthetic procedures and physical characteristics of all these are published by Alexander Shulgin. These compounds have the characteristic of having some of the centering qualities of MDMA, yet being more LSD-like than is MDMA without the powerful push of LSD. This lowers the likelihood of the user being trapped in deep pools of repressed material.
Not being as pushy as LSD, these compounds require developing volition to achieve similar levels of experience. This is the same kind of volition that develops the attributes for good meditation practice. Consequently, it is easier to focus attention under their influence; as one develops proficiency in entering the desired state, it is found that the advantage of one compound over another diminishes. The appropriate dose (found by experiement—generally equivalent to 25–50 micrograms of LSD) of most any long-acting psychedelic is helpful."

"For myself, I found training in Tibetan Buddhist meditation a potent adjunct to psychedelic exploration. In learning to hold my mind empty, I became aware that other levels of reality would more readily manifest. It was only in absolute stillness, accompanied by a special, highly developed quality of listening, that many subtle but extremely valuable nuances of reality appeared. While I achieved this to some extent in ordinary practice, I found this effect to be greatly amplified while under the influence of a psychedelic substance. This in turn intensified my daily meditation practice."

no one wants to try psilocybin? I find that is the most centering of all psychedelics. Especially large dose of some golden teachers, or I would even say PE but those are a little rough.

Hey Zombi3,
I know that it is difficult to know where to go, but start something and start small like 2-3 minutes every day and build a good habit.
Incidentally a couple of years ago I stumbled upon a very simple meditation by Thich Nhat Hahn, it is called aimlessness. Here's how it goes:
Just sit down in a comfortable position and breath deeply and relaxed and let the breath settle. Then just sit there and be in aimlessness, do not plan to go anywhere, do not think of anything, do literally nothing with your body or mind. Just be still. As soon as a thought or a question "wtf am I doin?" comes up, again return to aimlessness.
For me it was a great relief in a time when I wondered what to do - it gave me some relaxation from not knowing where to go.
Kind regards Johnny

So meditation is thinking. I think constantly but there are things that I do when I need to think and be at peace. Meditation is at peace correct. I don't stop thinking so your telling me you can actually shut it off. No you must be. I don't believe that's possible.

To argue what meditation is, is like a mosquito trying to bite an iron bull.
Look, and it can't be seen. Listen, and it can't be heard. Reach, and it can't be grasped.
Above, it isn't bright. Below, it isn't dark. Seamless, unnamable, it returns to the realm of nothing. Form that includes all forms, image without an image, subtle, beyond all conception.
Approach it and there is no beginning; follow it and there is no end. You can't know it, but you can be it, at ease in your own life. Just realize where you come from: this is the essence of wisdom.

I don't like meditation timers, I like to meditate until I'm done meditating, if I have a schedule too. Whenever you have a timer set, time is always in your mind, even if you ignore it. Subconsciously you know you're on a time limit, at least that's how I feel.

But my definition is semi correct right? It's the things I do when I just need some peace and think. When I had a car I'd just leave my music off and drive as far as I could go. Another thing I do is just shoot some hoops by myself. Blow off some steam. Give myself some time to think. My mind doesn't shut off I know breathing techniques I had a middle school teacher that that's how we started our day lights off and everything. But my mind never stops racing.

I think it depends on who you are. I am with you in that I sit until there is no reason to get up . Some people find a timer allows them to surrender their time without worry because something else is keeping track for them.
There are 1000 paths that lead up the same mountain. If a timer helps you throw a foot out, than great. But when the "time" comes, you must also let that go too.

I feel the exact opposite. I delegate all my thoughts about time to the timer and just meditate. Its not like I am sitting under some magical tree all day.
Also I find it very difficult to meditate. The timer helps me to just get on with it and not give up. It often feels like a useless exercise and just when I have had enough of it I have some sort of breakthrough and renewed motivation.
When I meditate in another place (during travel) I can actually feel a deep relaxation come over me within a couple minutes. I do not feel that at home.

I believe that there are as many definitions to meditation as there are people. In my opinion, if you are interested in meditation itself the best thing is to get a qualified teacher of some non-sectarian form of meditation. Why non-sectarian, well if you just want meditation, you might not wanna get an entire apparatus of worship - that is another maze to get lost in, but hey, if you feel at home with worshipping that is fine too - indeed Bhakti (meaning devotion to something, maybe a God or similar) where you just immerse yourself in worship is a form of meditation too. Not my taste, but my full respect to those who feel at home there. (The clip I posted before contains meditation taught by an atheist, i.e. pretty non-sectarian, and straight to the point. I'm not an atheist (nor a theist) but I appreciate the straight-to-the-pointness, and that was where this thread was going: what is meditation?.)
OK, many definitions, however, I believe there is a common trait though, and that is that there needs to some element of practice (usually keeping some focus or focusing on remaining detached) and that one should strive to always, during the practice, be aware of that one is practicing and keeping the focus (maybe the breath, maybe God, maybe sensations in the body, maybe observing the thoughts, etc.). But also not judge oneself if one forgets about it. Dr. David Fontana once wrote a very good book called "The Meditator's Handbook" in which he stressed one thing though and in any form of meditation, there would never occur to the meditator to switch focus or form of meditation during one sitting. A sitting (or whatever position one assumes) is a pretty formal event and the formality gives support to maintaining the focus of the practice.
To just equate meditation to thinking I think is a little too simple. I would say that meditation is a distinct practice, that has some formality (not "just thinking") to it, that (among other things) structures thinking so that our mind becomes more of our tool rather than a burden. I am not there yet, hell my mind bugs me a lot sometimes, but this is my goal (to get a better mind/thinking) and maybe therefore my definition of meditation gets colored by this wishful thinking of mine. (I need to get it!) :-)
Currently I do the form of Zazen where one just sits and observes whatever happens inside, and I regularly find myself getting lost in thought and then I realize, "hey, I'm meditating", and then I return to the focus of remaining a detached observer of what is happening. But then there are moments, I'd say glimmers, where I enjoy a tremendous stillness and there is a peace there that is unspeakable, so I'll pass on trying to pour words out about it. It must be experienced. I thoroughly enjoyed many of the more poetic descriptions in this thread of what meditation is and those descriptions better hint at this.
Thank you guys for this discussion, I'm off to my meditation cushion right now, inspired by this thread.
Kind regards Johnny
