Concern with GE in monotubs
    #21783270 - 06/09/15 01:27 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

I currently have two different monotubs colonizing. Both have about 5qt of rye spawn with 7qt of properly pasteurized coir/verm mix. The strain is penis envy. Here is my concern:

monotub #1 is going on two weeks and is far behind monotub #2 which is only one week and almost 100%. Both tubs' holes are sealed with duct tape, however the tubs themselves are different. Tub #1 is a Plexiglas box with a lid that just sits on top. I wrap the Plexiglas tub in plastic wrap to make-up for the basic lid. I've successfully fruited in this tub once before, but colonization time was never as optimum as tub #2 is performing now. Tub #2 is a typical 66qt. plastic sterilite tote. The mycelium in #2 looks perfect, like wispy spiderweb connectedness. The mycelium in #1 looks a lot more dense and spotted.

Initially I thought too much GE was the reason #1 fell behind, so I stacked it below #2 (hoping the extra weight would seal the lid more). Now I'm wondering if the problem is not enough GE (due to the plastic wrap). I'm currently debating if I should replace any of the taped holes in Plexiglas monotub #1 with tight polyfil. Before I do, I want some advice. Would it be better to wait it out? I know pasteurization only lasts so long, but I like to avoid exposing to air contaminants as much as possible. I've normally been able to address my concerns searching existing threads, but I'm stumped and don't want to screw myself rushing to any conclusions.

Temperatures are staying between 70 and 80F outside the tubs. Also, monotub #2 may have gotten a bit more spawn then #1. I can try to take pictures if necessary.

I appreciate everyone here that make shroomery the encyclopedia that it is. Thanks guys!
