Stimulant affect on connectivity

What are your opinions on stimulants affect on one's connection to others/universe/the spirit/God?
This is arising from mentors who are repeatedly prompting me to quit using nicotine (e-cig though I still smoke occasionally) as they feel it is an important step in my growth.
I disagree somewhat as I appreciate the affect it has on dreams, increases vividness and helps keep me on a fine edge where I am not totally unaware of the dream but also not quite fully lucid, preferring to be shown things rather than becoming the architect of the dream. It also helps me focus as well as break through other's barriers/illusions.
I could be entirely wrong in this but at times I feel some may merely be threatened by that last point, 'intense' has been how it has been described by others.
At this point I do plan to stop (never start smoking) in order to ease those anxieties but I was curious about other's opinions on this.
edit: I should add that I am not really from this scene (at this time I lean towards feeling that delving into other 'realities' is a trap to keep us from shaping the current 'reality' we can actually change) and other than nicotine I maintain sobriety but am posting here to get a viewpoint similiar to those that this pressure comes from.

Honestly it's very nice to see your post.
One event I see occurring is people accepting an absolute stance, or an either/or type of situation, when it's rarely like that in reality.
For instance with tobacco, there's current perception, but if you look at it from several traditions, tobacco is seen as sacred and used during spiritual ceremonies and so forth. In these ceremonies, as the peace pipe is smoked, prayers are said to rise to the spirit world with the smoke; where there is another ceremony going on; which is connected to this world. Interesting stuff.
