Oats man
    #21782844 - 06/09/15 11:31 AM (8 years, 7 months ago)

So just got back from TSC with my 50lb bag of oats and loaded up a large stock pot and started cooking.

I must say I like the uniformness of just using one grain and they don't seem overly dusty. I will update in a little while once hydrated and dried. Plan to run 6 bags through a PC cycle today to it will be an experiment in progress.

Although I can already vouch for the price, 14.99/50lb

Looking forward to your results.  I picked up 50lbs last week and am just trying to finish off my rye berries before moving into the oats.

So boiling worked out pretty well. There seems to be a large margin for error with oats when it comes to boil time.

I will say this is the only grain I've ever seen that I can squeeze between my fingers and have significant water come out without actually smashing the grain. Like a little sponge.

Steaming dry now and I'll update again tomorrow after I run a PC cycle and let em cool down overnight.

Plus being able to boil @ 212f for 20-30mins probably makes sterilization in the PC easier.

I do see a drawback already that those of you who work with rye may already be used to. Per qt, the oats are much much less compact. For every quart it feels about half the weight of a hydrated qt of wbs.

On the upside with it not being so compact the sterilization cycle shouldn't take quite as long although I'll run it just as long to begin with.

Wayyyy cleaner though. I don't have 7748849 pieces of random wbs all over my kitchen. Now to see if they turn to mush or not after a 3hr cycle

Well the oats held up well to a long PC cycle but either these are too dry or I prep my wbs way too wet. Will someone weigh in?

When I massaged the bag you could hear the oats rustle.

Yeah they look dry as usual, but it's fine. Since they have a hull they hold hydration pretty well

The biggest risk with oats is falling asleep for 15 hours with the stove cranked to the max while boiling them and burning your house down. It could happen. Be careful.

Those grains look well hydrated.

Lol ionno they just seem dry for some reason. I can squish them through the bag so I guess just the husk is dry and hardish.

New grain and all
