are you serious? scales are so important to be able to improvise solos.... plus they help your fingers be able to move along the fret board.

Scales are what you learn when you don't know better. You can learn all the scales you want but it doesn't teach you anything. If you learn chords and only chords, you can not only create your own scale patterns, in a sense, but say you have a dim chord, suddenly you're soloing using that set of notes. Scales don't teach you 'this sounds like that' it just teaches you how to wail on strings and have it not sound retarded. Scales are for noobs. Sorry.

Sancho is certainly right. You cannot deny that scales are crucial. I would bet that even the most pro guitarists would tell you that scales are very important.
Sure, you can solo by ear and feel of the notes, but the underlying basis to what you are playing lies in scales.

So wrong and foolish. All musical knowledge is equally important. Any approach that helps one understand the structure of it is valuable.
Da fuck you even talkin about?

The fuck you talking about? Scales are a fundamental component of music theory and composition. Only a noob would say scales are for noobs and you only need chords. A good musician utilizes every possible function available, you don't limit yourself by shunning one of the most rudimentary and necessary things in music Scales are the first thing you should learn and even when you are a master of the instrument you still utilize scales. And a lead guitarist that doesn't know any scales is

You don't need to learn scales if you learn the theory. Derp. Without that knowledge to utilize the scales, they're just a beginner's tool that is going to bore and annoy. It's a great way to put you in a box. You don't NEED scales. Sorry your ass is raw. Maybe you've got some baby powder around the house for that.

Scales are an integral part of theory.... you have no idea what you are talking about. I don't really think I need to take advice from you. I was in a touring progressive metal band for 8-9 years, played with Opeth, Dream Theater, Six Feet Under.. etc. Real musicians know scales. You don't just take a scale and play it up and down and make a song from it You find roots and fragments and combine with other modes and arpeggios and whatnot. They form the backbone of many riffs and melodies and solos. If you dismiss scales completely, you are limiting yourself significantly, that's all there is to it really. All aspects of music are valid.

You do realize that chords are made from scales right? A major contains three notes from the A major scale, for example. Saying that scales are useless is almost as dumb as saying notes are useless. Now, if you're trying to say that practicing scales up and down is useless then that's just your opinion I guess.
