Cops Can’t Legally Wait for Drug Dogs Anymore BY BARRY BARD ON APRIL 22, 2015
The United States Supreme Court made a landmark ruling yesterday that prohibits police officers for holding citizens in custody while waiting for a drug dog to arrive at a standard traffic stop.
Judging a case titled Rodriguez vs. U.S., the court ruled that as long as the crime isn’t clearly drug-related (like speeding or making an illegal turn), cops can’t keep an innocent citizen around simply based on suspicion.
In Rodriguez’s case, he was driving on the shoulder when a police officer pulled him over. That police officer didn’t like how Rodriguez looked, so he then called in a drug-sniffing dog which arrived ten minutes later and sniffed out a little bit of methamphetamine.
But Rodriguez wasn’t a drug mule and he certainly wasn’t committing any crime by driving a tad erratically. Thus, Supreme Court ruled 6-3 in favor of Rodriguez, and dogs all over the nation can no longer be called to sniff drugs out of cars without just cause.
With the need for weed-sniffing dogs subsiding, perhaps dogs can go back to doing what they do best: taking naps and chewing bones.

Says the dog found meth? Anyway I always here these people ask what to do with these dogs with legal weed? There's still coke, meth, heroin, bombs and everything. Are they really that stupid they think these dogs ONLY sniff for weed? Still won't be able to get called in on potential hard drug runners anymore now too in this case

It will be hard to use drug dogs on cars when most people can buy legal weed now yeah...
Drugs in traffic are NOT good, but we need tolerance..
No tolerance is insane, that's what is wrong with the system
If you smoke weed and drive it is only ok if science says it is ok If you are below the legally tolerated limit - just like with alcohol
We need scientific measurements here, and there are drug meters available
If we used them sensibly we wouldn't imprision people who smoked weed or meth in the weekend but drowe on tuesday after.
Science needs to dictate the allowable blood % of a drug, then we got machines that can measure this in breath very accurately too
It's not a big problem scientifically, the problem is when we are non-scientific in our approach (non-tolerance)
People will keep driving on drugs, also doctor prescribed drugs like morphine
The only way to get a sensible society is with scientific understanding of the dangers and scientific laws.

How would science account for people's tolerance levels? Especially with weed, it makes a huge difference. Nicotine doesn't impair your ability to drive, neither does meth and other stims, and in moderate amounts heroin, xanax, and other downers don't really affect driving either.
Alcohol is the most dangerous drug when it comes to driving, so let's just keep all those laws the same. Driving drowsy is as dangerous as driving wasted. So have them do field sobriety tests. If someone's driving badly, pull them out of the car and see if they can walk straight. Simple. If you take so much heroin you can't stay awake then go to jail for a DUI, I know someone who has had that exact thing happen. There is really no need to change the laws that we already have in place.
No law is going to make driving safe, it's inherently risky. Having it pointed out sucks but we have all been driving around with stoned teenagers and hippies tripping balls and junkies half passed out on h and drunk assholes since we started driving.
