I do all my sterile work in my SAB. I do everything from agar work to inoculating 9lb sawdust bags with grain spawn in that thing and my contam rate is very very low. I love my SAB.

For the price and effectiveness I have yet to see something better than an SAB, or else Id gladly switch over. Every single noteworthy grower on here uses an SAB or flowhood (save a couple random shmuvbox users.)

Oh fuck off. This SAB design is as good as any, and better than most. Hoods aren't the end-all of mycology either.

The SAB is great. I'm still sitting at a 98% clean spawn rate after hundreds of g2gs. When I do get a contam, I'm pretty sure it is my sterile techniques fault; or a new thing I'm trying, not the SAB. I haven't had any bad jars in a long time...
I plan to build a flowhood eventually, just because I like the idea of not having my arms restricted to the SAB tub walls. I'll bet my contam rates would be just the same though, if not worse. They are quite expensive vs a SAB, I just haven't been able to justify putting out the cash to build one as of yet for the small benefit it gives.

I made my SAB and added the magnetic hole covers, the magnets at Menards are 6.99 for 3. Also, with the Hole saw, if you run the drill bit in reverse the teeth will more melt than cut, and will dramatically decrease the possibility of cracking the plastic while cutting. As a machinist for over 20 years, thats one of the tricks you learn.

I am fortunate that in this city, we have 2 Lowes, 2 Menards, 1 Home Depot. So whoever has the lowest price gets my business. I did get to pour my first agar in my new SAB, but I kinda made a mess. I let the agar cool to long, and got clumps, reheated it to melt in the microwave, poured too soon and darned near burned my fingers, used too much rubbing alcohol and almost asphyxiated my wife and I, put the SAB on the couch, and the petri dishes have agar on the lids, slopped out on the rims, and have a lot of condensation. but what the heck, it was my 1st pour. I think I will also add a clear plexglas windows too the SAB, it was just too fuzzy to see what I was doing in there, maybe also add some top lighting. Now I am waiting to see if the condensation clears up, and if I have managed to contaminate any of the plates, but the 2 slants seem to be good. I'll get better, can't see how it could be worse... well beside burning the house down. LOL

Just wanted to thank SpitballJedi for explaining this SAB design so well.
I've tried to stick to it closely for my first pf-tek project. It was very helpful.
Made one very small variation: I am right handed, and during dry runs of the inoculations I found that I preferred my right hand to be a little higher than my left hand. So I made the right-hand hole a few cm higher than the left-hand hole. It worked great for me...
Love, Hanz.

I used a stake knife to make my first SAB. The square holes worked just fine.

Cool thanks....i'd post a pic but its' sort of embarrassing lol, i think it will do the job though, i only need it for agar (it's a 66 qt) and then i'll make a bigger one to do grains and what not in......i have gloves but no sleeves and can not for the life of me find my inoculation loop, also i've read some threads like stro's cleanign and isolating which are helpfull and all but it seems much different when i'm working with no pours...streaking seems to be a lot trickier

Don'the be embarrassed. I've made some pretty ghetto SABs . I haven't used sleeves for over a year and my loop is just a twisted up guitar string.

Man, you just sound so "twisted", Or are you just wired??? I dropped my SAB and made a SAR Still Air Room. It is a 6'X6'X6' 1/2" PVC pipe box wrapped in 4mil plastic sheeting, inside I have a small Hepa filter glued to a small plastic box with a 12v computer cooling fan sucking air thru the filter. I put everything in the room, spray the room down with 10% bleach water, turn on the fan and go shower, put on a tyvec hooded suit, and then enter and sit getting it all set up and then do my transfers. seems to be working, and I have plenty of room for doing grain to grain from jars to bags. If I do redo that room, I would make it a bit bigger, so I can put a small shelving unit to keep my grain bags in there. I also learned that using a heat sealer is NOT as good as just using a wire tie to close the bags.
