some fun ideas to play with
    #2178065 - 12/14/03 10:51 PM (20 years, 4 months ago)

any information or opinions out there relating to:

pinning underwater? (imagine a cake completely submerged in a tub of water)

and to save board space:

super absorbant shamee chunks in the cake, the idea behind this being that the super absorbant would hold a significantly larger amount of moisture then just substrate.

i plan to test these 2 ideas after i get some more thoughts.

you'd over saturate the mycelium and drown it.

I don't think mushrooms can pin under water, bubbler or no bubbler.

I have some of that plastic grid, that is used as a defuser for floresant lights. I use it to line the bottom of my fruiting chamber. I have about 1 inch of distiled water under it.
I have had quite a few shrooms grow through the grid and into the water. They can grow to maturity while under water but they are realy soft and will start to rot fast. They also take 4-5 times longer to dry. I don't know if they will form pins while under water but the shrooms seem to do OK.

From personal experience, cakes WILL pin underwater.  The problem is that if you submerge a cake [with a bubbler] one of two bad things begin to happen. . .pieces of substrate break off;  substances begin to leach from the cake, giving a turbid solution.  If the solution were somehow osmotically balanced, and the bubbles shielded from the cakes themselves, this might be an *entertaining* thing to try.
Mold doesn't like to grow underwater

Hmm, if lack of oxygen is a problem, here's an idea.

Did anyone ever see themovie Abyss? There's some pink jelly-like substance (no idea on the name, can anyone help?) that has an incredible oxygen content. You can submerge mice (and iI guess people) in it and they breathe in a liquid enviornment. It's hard to explain, but it's like breathing underwater except it's not exactly water.

Back to point, if it weren't for the other problems, if you could obtain this stuff, itcould possibly solve the oxygen problem.

Complicated solution to a rather simple problem, but oh well.
