P. semilanceata - Norway, June 8th 2015 (Update: new pics from June 13th) * 1
    #21779758 - 06/08/15 05:30 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

I was roaming around in a sheep pasture looking for signs of this mushroom (perhaps a semi but not sure yet) spotting a number
of the usual Panaolus sp. and Protostropharia alongside a few smaller Galerina sp. when I found these, growing in close proximity
to very well decayed manure, almost like soil. This area has been farmland and pastures probably since the middle age.

I didn't have any newspaper or similar proof of date handy, so you'll just have to trust me. :bigjoint:

Thanks! Rather unexpected this early, yes. However our "spring" has so far quite resembled autumn, condition wise.

That was regarding the find in the linked post.

The ones pictured here are undoubtedly P. semilanceata.

I have seen them in spring in Tasmania, so the same triggers exist in both seasons.

but we are seeing the same there here in Tas, with spring and autumn sharing conditions.

Well, living in a wet and humid part of Norway, I would believe they could be popping up here and there at
unusual times. I've had a look a few times in past years without any luck, though. In addition there are supposed
to be rarer species growing here too, favoring an earlier season, these include P. fimetaria and P. liniformans, but
to my knowledge they have not been found in Norway so far.

Went back to the spot yesterday, checking for more supposedly P. fimetaria.

The usual sight of Protostropharia semiglobata in groups on well-decayed dung, but also more Psilocybe semilanceata
growing on the grassy edge just beside the manure.

Not exactly, these did not grow directly from poop as such, just very close to it.
I think nitrogen is a key factor here.

Great find Anglerfish. Well done.
Here in Wales, if it's been warm and wet enough I expect to find libs from late June, occasionally earlier.
Now you have found a spot that can produce in the early season, I expect you will keep finding them in future years when conditions are right.
No sign of any fungi at all here in the hills, but a bit more rain and a bit more sun and that could change very quickly.

Thanks, t1mp5! But I haven't beat you yet, finding them in May last year.:thumbup:

In any case our spring season here is absolutely sh**e being more akin to autumn.
So we'll have to drop the barbecue and go foraging instead, which is, after all, not too bad. :stoned:

Wow! Congratulations! I have never found them this early myself. Last year a brit found them the 27:th May. edit: oops, you already posted a link to that photo.

I am also wondering about what set them of this early. We had a cold spring in Scandinavia this year, no warm days for mycelia growth followed by some cold days (15C) that usually set of early summer flushes...

Panic. "Oh it's fall again we have to make a move! Quick, before the frost sets in!".

I've checked other locations without finding much fungal activity at all except for
the usual dung suspects. P. semiovatus really do get big some times:

Early here too, seen a few libs in Manchester, nothing worth collecting but looks like it's starting.

I give you the choice of 2 pills.

With each containing one of the following:
Cyanide... Psilocin... Would you take the risk?
Didn't think so.

This is why Positive Identification prior to consumption is important.

This doesn't really apply to P. semilanceata, unless you start seriously messing up the top soil too much. Mycelium will
be slightly broken and disrupted, yes, but when mending and growing back together it will result in new knots forming
and thus  new (and perhaps more) fruits will occur in the spot.

Pulling up woodchip dwelling species is a different story, though.

Which also is debated. Is it better or worse to leave stem buts in the open, exposed to all kinds of bacteria and mold?

Some people think mushrooms have roots like plants, which suffers from that kind of harvesting method. Other people think pulling them up hurt the mycelia, even though it´s a network with "redundancy" in nutrient transportation. Of course, massive destruction will hurt it, especially if big clusters av being pulled together, ripping up big chunks of the ground. But I have not seen any good evidence or science supporting pinching/cutting stems, just opinions based on other peoples opinions...
