Hippies
    #21779585 - 06/08/15 04:44 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

This might sound trollish, but I am actually dead serious. Some of you will know exactly what I'm talking about.

When I go to the pages of the people in the Ayahuasca/shroom etc groups I belong to, they all range from at least a little bit hippie or alternative in some way, to full blown hippie freak. And I mean all. Almost all of them have psychedelic artwork on their pages. Most have some kind of hippie jewelry or hair or look to them. Photos of sustainable gardening etc. etc.. Just a lot of Trustafarian stuff.

My question is: what came first? The chicken or the egg? I know that doing psychedelics is supposed to change you, and it's supposed to be generally for the better. But do they change you into a hippie if you do them enough? Do you start becoming attracted to those things, or are most people a hippie first and then do the psychedelics.

I've done shrooms but not Aya yet. I like the way I dress and my house decor. I like my friends and lifestyle. I don't want to turn hippyish.

Join us on the tie dye side of life :mushroom2:

The mentality was always there, psychedelics helped it progress maybe..

The hippie lifestyle appealed to me before I did any psyhedelics..

Ive said it time and time again, lsd, mushrooms, psychedelics make you who you are, they show you who you are, cement it into time space amd the fabric of existence th at you are you, youve been there the wholetime.

its that bitter-sweet-sour, electric-smooth-twang. everything you ever have, are. or will feel along with every emotion, joy, hate, love, fear or aspiration burning down your nerves and into the fabric of your place in this existence at ten thousand degrees above and below zero will you find yourself wondering if you've been dead or alive this whole time. being born over and over only to die over and over hoping the wheel stops in the same place it started when you spun it, and when it finally does and you can step back and take a nice deep breath you realize how beautiful life is, remember, wake up to the most beautiful day of your life every single day, its just the way.

well, many people call me a hippy, some of them call me by hippy and not even my name.
i have long hair and a beard. i spend amazing amounts of time in the woods for various reasons. im into botany, horticulture, mycology, geology, farm organic food, smoke weed and eat psychedelic drugs, i love rock and roll and jam bands, camping, hiking, fishing, hunting whatever. i have a lot of interesting philosophical views, and views on life death and the universe in general. people also love to tell me im fried because of the amount of lsd i eat. but the way i see it im just a regular ass dude, a bit hick possibly. and ive been this way since i remember anything, im the same person i was before the acid, its just super engraved in who i am after the acid. love yourself.

This.

What I always find fascinating about this question the OP raises is that in Terence McKenna lestures/videos he would make a statement about how ordinary the group is. That you couldn't tell the people that would attend a TM workshop apart from an "ordinary" group of people.

I'm always amazed when I go to events which attract hippies, dirty hippies, and wooks because of the astounding level of conformity that they manage to achieve.

Another facet of this discussion becomes where do material aesthetics come into play. I consider myself a psychedelic person based on my personal philosophies, my thinking, and my rhetoric. I don't pay particular attention to fashion. So the fact that their is a persistent style that hippies stil follow blows my mind.

And I want to rant just a little bit about male dirty hippie wook fashion for a moment... I get hippie chick fashion for the most part. But the whole cargo/patchquilt pants, high top shoes/boots, flatbrim hat... what the fuck is that, its too wigger for me or something. I also really do not understand why white people wear dreads. I've read plenty about why some cultures wear dreads and I dig it but, but white people... I guess I'm just racist.

I call myself a hippie sometimes just cuz I listen to 60s psychedelic rock, do psychedelics, like the psychedelic arts, and just like the culture overall.

But I prefer to be a psychonaut cuz I'm not really a hippie. I don't dress like a hippie, I don't wear daisy crowns, I don't believe rocks have any magic in them, I don't go around spreading love, I don't care for energy saving methods and choose to run the entire world on hemp resources, etc etc

I'm just free-spirited and like the culture

Eat a 5 strip of acid and you will be a hippy it happened to me. I ate shrooms and smoked a lot of weed but never considered myself a hippy my first acid trip I ate 5 hits and halfway through realized my true nature and life style was with the deadheads or hippys that made the stuff. Acid change me bro but I wouldn't change a thing about who I am now I love being a hippy its the shit.:willfredjoint:

LSD "converted" me. I'm not an all-out-there hippie, but I have the same view  point, sense and style...When I first tripped I understood everything about their culture, and how the drug guided them to be that way. Why they all want peace, why they are respectful and loving towards everyone. It made me what to live that way.

I am very normal looking and into the psych culture. You wouldnt be able to tell im a tripper unless i told you. I like it that way. I was never fond of extra attention and outlandish looks. I just be me.

I keep my hair short and my facial hair neatly trimmed.  I wear clothes that don't stand out.  I do have some tattoos that are telling if you look at them closely.

I've also eaten more than a five strip of LSD and taken Ayahuasca so not taking enough or the right drugs isn't the issue.

I do try to be a pacifist but I don't preach.  Just my personal means of being happy with my life.

You know who else ate a lot of psychedelics but never wore tie dye?  These guys.

I don't think there was such as thing as a "hippie" after around 1972.

Hippies were very much defined by the times. A hippie, in 1967, was someone who ingested LSD and gained insights that made them leave their former habits in order to center their lives around Psychedelics.

There was an "innocence" and an optimism, and a belief in the "justice system".

People believed that Psychedelics were the way to true progress, both spiritually and physically, morally and scientifically.

Males may have grown long hair and beards. Females stopped wearing makeup, stopped wearing bras, and stopped shaving their under arms. But this was at a time when no one was doing that. People who did it were considered "freaks". But that wasn't what made a person a "hippie".

It was a time when venturing outside the city with long hair was risking your safety.

Those times are long gone.

Gone also is the "innocence" and the belief in the "justice" system. The enthusiasm and optimism pretty much completely died as sincerely believing people were incarcerated for communing with a Substance that they considered a sacrament.

Belief in the "system" disappeared -- and along with it the people called the "hippies".

This true but what do you call someone that uses psychedelics for enlightenment now. Its just I have been thinking im a hippie because I love things that hippies did (the grateful dead, massive amounts of LSD, free love, non judgmental people) I use acid for a lot of things like tripping and learning but mostly to think outside the box. Maybe im a modern day hippie?

Like he and i posted, hippies were alive in the sixties, they were there, they were t he ones who actually did it, started it, like said above when no one was doing it.

You can call yourself whatever you'd like, human, persin, i mean id say your just you. Maybe you believe inthe beleifs of the hippies, but they are about all gone.

^ this exactly.

Because the people of the 60s were being exposed to massive amounts of discourse from all walks of life, (civil rights, vietnam, etc.) they dropped L and realized that they didn't want to be a part of the polarization of society.  Instead they would choose to drop out of the societal hierarchy and show their beliefs because they knew with conviction they could stand behind them.

Nowadays, nothing has changed.  The U.S. is still involved in the longest war it has ever been a part of, with no end in sight.  People feel safe at their homes living vicariously through their televisions and shit is getting fucked up everywhere in the world but there.

Despite having the internet and various other resources at our disposal to fact-check and research the real truth, people are still confused on things their government tells them is fact (statistics, drug law and effect, various freedoms and rights yada yada).

Back to my main point...
Which is why I think that the claim that the hippies are no more is just wrong.

Being a hippie isn't just based on time and place or current events of the times.  It is about the schema a group of people uses to navigate through the challenges of a time.  Being a hippie is a choice about how.  Hippies understand the what, know that they cannot understand the why, so they focus on what they can change which is the 'how'.

L is only an 80ish year old drug.  It is very young.  It is a catalyst for the imagination; a catalyst for change. In 500 years or so I am curious as to whether the term hippie will even exist let alone be relevant.  My guess is not.

My point is I think hippies still exist today and that it is more of just an identification of a collective.

"We think alike and have similar mannerisms, therefore we are ________"

fill in the blank, throughout history and forever forwards
