Hydrated lime as a substrate additive * 1
    #21779001 - 06/08/15 02:26 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

I know we use hydrated lime in casings with peat to raise ph and help ward off contamination.  Would adding it to bulk substrate give the same kind of contamination resistance?  I use RRs casing mix which uses a hefty dose of HL and my casing layers seem to get pretty well colonized (i case 1 to 2 days after 100% colonization) so such a high PH doesn't seem to affect colonization at all.  I did some searching and there isn't a lot of people asking about this so if I can't find a consensus I'm just going to try it and see how it goes.

Honestly it probably depends on your sub.

For poo this may be of use but I don't see the need with coir. Coffee may benefit as well.

Its used in straw prep so there's no reason you can't use it elsewhere I wouldn't think.

Hydrated Lime is Calcium Hydroxide, a moderate base, similar to Lye but weaker.  Unlike Lime/Oyster Shell/Calcium Carbonate, Hydrated Lime does not only neutralize acid, it will keep going and make a solution or substrate basic.

It is used with peat because peat is very acidic, my guess would be as a cheaper and easier method of getting the job done compared to Calcium Carbonate based materials.  The pH adjustments in a Poo/Coir/Straw/Coffee substrate will varry.  Do not use Hydrated Lime with these substrates unless you have measured the pH of your sub as being too acidic or been informed that by a reliable source that it is, or you risk making it basic.

Of the bulk subs, only coffee is meaningfully acidic to my knowledge, so unless you are using lots coffee, there would be no reason to add hydrated lime.  If you feel like dumping in some white powder, use calcium carbonate, as it cannot have disasterous consequences but will balance the pH if your sub is acidic.

I spawned some popcorn casings and had double-overlay cause I didn't put enough hydrogen peroxide in my automated aquarium mister.  I only got one mushroom so I cut off the head part where the seeds fall from and put it in a jar of LC and sprayed it all over a tin of PF cakes I made with gravel, cardboard, and bisquick in my microwave.  I think it will be good cause B+ is so potent.
Triggered yet?

No, this does not look right...

This is true to an extent.

While doing straw the pH is swung drastically and mycelium colonizes it just fine and in time the pH begins to level back out.

Living mycelium doesn't have much trouble with pH variations but extreme pH's prevent spores from germinating which I believe is what he's getting at

It isn't needed if you have the proper pH to start with most substrates used already have the proper pH levels for growing.  Raising the pH level too much could be harmful to the mycellium and lower your B/E.
I think there is something in my sig about this.
