Just A Couple Questions About Mushrooms
    #21777331 - 06/08/15 04:49 AM (8 years, 7 months ago)

Yo! very first post here! Ever since I learned about magic mushrooms, I always pondered two questions: Is it possible to grow magic mushrooms outdoors and how do mushrooms (Magic Or Otherwise) grow in the wild? (Like, How Do The Spores (Or Whatever) Gather To Form The Mushroom? Also, From What I Gathered It Seems To Be Very Hard For Mushrooms To Grow In The Forests Due To Wildlife And High Risks Of Contamination)

Sorry if these are a couple of completely ridiculous questions, they've just always been prodding the back of my mind. Thanks for all the answers in advance!

It is possible to grow them outdoors but is much harder then indoor growing from what I've read.

It only takes one spore to grow mushrooms, the amount of spores even one mushroom drops is a ridiculous amount, so it could be a 1/10000 chance a spore will actually take, where if you were growing them indoors in a controlled setting, statistics like that would be unacceptable. It is much harder for mushrooms to grow outdoors wildly then indoor, but for everyone one mushroom you see, there could be thousands to millions of spores that were wasted. Nature makes it much harder for them to grow, but also has a lot more chances to grow, which is why they still thrive, the shear number of spores given off makes the likelyhood one will take go up dramatically. It only takes one in the right condition to grow.

Psilocybin cubensis for instance, if I remember correctly, will lay on grain material that is eaten by cows, then shit out, and then that spore has the perfect substrate to grow assuming weather conditions are correct. I might be wrong on this last part though it's been a while since I've studied all this. I believe any grain fed animal can grow mushies in their shit, certain kinds of mushies anyway.

And welcome to the shroomery! :awedance: :aweyeah:

SirShroomsAlott is mostly right on his info. But it actually takes a minimum of 2 spores to produce mushrooms, as that's how they "mate".

But growing magic mushrooms outdoors is pretty easy if you're in the right climate. But you can't go shoot spores outside and expect shrooms to pop out. If you have colonized substrate, you just need to mix that with some hydrated hay or coir, and pretty much set up a patch. It's quite easy, actually. But you just gotta watch out for when they start growing.

But the whole point of fruiting bodies are to shoot out millions of spores into the air, and have hopefulness to colonize it. And for P. Cubensis, the most common substrate in the wild is cow manure, or occasionally horse manure. Technically they have the chance to grow on many different things wildly, but it doesn't always happen.

There actually is some debate on whether or not the spores are eaten by the cows, or if they just land into the cow dung and begin to grow from there.

Oh and welcome to the shroomery!
