Button mushroom casing

After afew failed attempts at trying Lc's and spore prints I resorted to buying a packet of commercial spawn. The spawn was on seed of some description most probably rye. The instructions called for mixing the grain with pasteurised cow poo and then case with peat. I did as instructed upto casing which I didn't do as I was making 250ml cakes. My theory was to colonise the cakes first then break them up and add to a bulk substrate. Problem is tho any of the spawn that was at or above the surface level exposed to air looks to have been infected with cobweb mold as far as I can tell. Should I have cased even in a small jars? Thanks in advance.

I'm afraid you won't get very far with cobweb mould. Commercial spawn usually comes in huge 10-20lb bags, so I'm not sure that's what you actually got?

Are you sure its cobweb and not whispy mycelium? So you have poo in cakes? Thats really silly if your doing bulk substrates in containers that small...

I reckon cobweb is greyer than that but I'd be interested to see what the other say. We case our Kings and I was scared we had cobweb but in fact they have a tendence to send very whispy white mycelium out into the casing. If you're still in doubt don't throw it all away: with our kings the whispy mycelium eventually consolidates and becomes thick and white. Perhaps yours will do something similar if its not cobweb?

Agreed. Mycelium.
Why bother with cakes when a simple grain-to-grain would suffice? How much substrate are you looking to inoculate?

No PC so no Grain to Grain.. When the cakes are fully colonised I plan to break up 4 cakes and add them to 5kg of bulk substrate. 1:5 ratio for quicker colonisation as previous attempts at bulk substrate have failed in the past..
