Honestly? No. Realistically, plumbing work is too expensive to pay with sex. (also, sometimes things could maybe happen anyway, but i always have a GF and i'm not a cheater)

Ever do anything illegal while working?
Doing drugs, masturbating, stealing? anything interesting while working?
I once knew a kid who'd masturbate in the work source public bathrooms daily, it was disturbing.

I've found some strange shit. here's a short list to give you an idea.
once found a whole potato stuck in a toilet. it was trapped right at the outlet and i had to take the toilet up to get it out.
I once cleared a 6 inch pipe that was completely clogged with tampons. like a lot of tampons. maybe 10 pounds of tampons.(they turn blue when theyve sat in the pipe for awhile)
I once had to simply remove maybe 15 feet of pipe and replace it because it was so clogged with TP. decomposed TP slurry that was packed really tightly and self sealed when a snake was pushed through it. musta been clogged for years to get like that.
find credit cards and drivers licenses and shit all the time.
once got called out to retrieve a wedding ring from the trap of a toilet.

i would never do anything illegal, but if i was going to, i would have smoked mad weed while working, and coke once or twice. i also would have had a company that wouldn't let us ask the customers to use the restroom, so i would piss in bottles and leave them in random places

Does the nastiness of a job influence your pricing? Like do you get to a house and see a toilet just so filthy and disgusting that you charge 500 for what would be say a 100 dollar job?

Sometimes. I worked for a company once that added a $200 fee for "unsanitary conditions" i usually only invoked that if there was cat shit everywhere or something. Also, if say, your drain comes apart under your house, and i have to work in a poopie pond to fix your shit, yeah, thats gonna cost. If its just shower water or something, i'll deal with it

I take pride in all of my work. I do my very best, to do the very best job possible every time. (within the limits of what the customer is willing to pay for) I guess the thing i'm most proud of is repiping my grandmothers house for her without a helper. It took at least twice as long, but i did the whole thing myself. I also remodeled my mom's kitchen with no skilled help. It was cool to do some cross-trade shit with high stakes. Came out nice. I was shitting bricks the whole time though, because i had to cut and polish the granite slabs for the countertops, and that was one thing that i was pretty iffy on at the time (i worked at a cabinet shop when i was a teenager so that part wasn't so scary)

yeah sounds pretty cool. like alot of my friends parents when we were growing up were tradesmen too and like his dad would be driving us somehwere and while we're driving he'd point to atleast like 2-3 houses along the way saying " yep, i built that ". and one of my uncles built this giant water feature out the front of a casino/club thing in his hometown which was immaculate.
kinda cool how they have something to show for their work you know? rather then some office guy who just does his job day in day out and really creates nothing of value.
plus its good skills to have. being able to fix shit and make shit. its a good thing
you run your own business or you work for someone else??

I've quit plumbing for the most part recently, and just do a few side jobs when i can. I'm currently a student studying agricultural business.
but to answer your question, i've tried it both ways. Working for someone else is kinda cool, because its their responsibility to keep you working 5 days. but the hourly isn't always so hot ya know? Being in business for yourself pays much better, but it takes an extra skillset, and its much more work. Also, advertising is expensive, and when youre the boss, the only way you're gonna stay working is through advertising, so there's an upfront cost(though its tax deductable)

what brand? theres probably a set screw somewhere, find it and loosen it if you haven't already. spray some WD-40 in there. wrap a rag around the base of the handle, and tap firmly with the handle of your hammer. tap several times(just tap, don't beat the shit out of it) going around the whole thing(or as much as you can if space is restricted on the back side.) Now, remove the rag, and grip the base of the handle with your hands. aplly a steady upwards pull while wiggling side to side. continue until you are tired or until the handle comes loose. in times of deperation, you can put a rag down on the sink edge/countertop and use the handle uf a channel locks pliers or another tool with a rubber handle as a lever to try and wedge it off. use the lever on both side, alternating until the bastard comes loose

if you are looking for the set screw, its probably underneath the logo on the handle. logo tab should pop right out and you'll need a small allen wrench to loosen the screw
good night and good luck

yah i already tried to take it off before, with the set screw all the way out, the thing wouldn't move at all. So the rag is just to shield the handle from scratches, well i got a rubber hammer, ill just hit it with that.
as for the brand, not sure because its not listed anywhere on it, all i know is the handle is L shaped

i banged on it for 30 minutes, couldn't get it to move.
im sure wd-40 would help but i wouldn't want to drink the water afterwords, and id be worried about trace amounts sticking around for a while
and being an L type handle, im not sure those faucet pullers are going to work. from what ive read most of them are shitty chinese crap that bends and breaks or slips, and because the top is curved on the handle of the faucet, im guessing its just going to slip
i was hitting it so hard the entire base of the faucet slid back and forth, and i tried 'upshots' hitting the bottom of the handle. obviously i could hit it alot harder but thing is our water shutoff under the sink isn't shuting the water off all the way, there's still a small trickle, so if i fuck this faucet up at the handle, i might have water running all over the counter or dripping below the sink, otherwise id have to shut the entire house off and that would suck
comon plumber man give me your good stuff

WD-40 will not get into your water from spraying the handle, but if youre worried about it, try some CLR or white vinegar. are you in a house or apt.? if its a house, go outside and turn the water off to the house. if its an apt, you probably ahve to give your neighbors 24 hours notice because you might be shutting their water off too. under the sink, theres gonna be either 1 or 3 nuts holding the faucet to the sink. If you have a basin wrench, thats the tool youre gonna want to use to tighten those nuts back up so that your faucet wont move on you. once you have done that, try the lever technique that i described again. It's entirely possible, depending on how old and how expensive your faucet is, that your best bet is gonna be to install a new one. where i live you can get a decent faucet for $150 or so. Theres cheaper ones too. It sounds to me like you have either a moen or a price pfister. If its a moen, youre gonna need a moen cartridge puller to do any repair on it. While you have the water off to the house anyway, now would be a good time to replace those angle stops under the sink that won't shut off all the way. (just make sure you get the same kind to make it easy on yourself). Seriously though, if it is giving you too much trouble, just throw it away and install new. It's not worth killing your day to save the $100 or so.

I never steal anything, but sure, there's plenty of opportunities. People give me keys to their houses all the time. People are really trusting in ways that don't make sense to me sometimes. Like, once, a lady just left me alone with her 2 young children. maybe 3, and 5 years old. She just walked off and went to chat on the phone in the kitchen. keep in mind that this is in a huge home in Calabasas.(kitchen is downstairs on the other side of the house) I know too many people who were molested to ever leave little kids like that with a goddamn stranger. but, yeah, there's just never been anything left out in the open that i was willing to risk stealing.

well as suspected the handle puller slipped repeatedly, couldn't use it.
used my rubber mallets handle to pry under the handle wish and the mallet broke, guess ill have to use a 2 x 4 and hope our counter or sink doesn't break

naw bro, call it a day. take it loose by the nuts under the sink and throw that thing in the garbage where it belongs. go get a cheapie from home depot for 100 bucks and put it on. if you can't turn of the water to the house, then get some compression caps that will fit your angle stops to keep them from leaking everywhere while you work. don't cheap out and try to use the same water supply lines. new ones are not expensive and its really nice to not have the shit leak when youre done

on a serious note.....actually the last one was serious.
On a more serious note I replaced my under the sink plumbing shit, what ever it is with a plastic version. Is that ok? Isn't it called a pea trap or something.

ever start any small fires while sweating or soldering copper?
I caught the inside of drywall once or twice, but it was small enough to just blow out. One time though, there was some insulation under the hole I had cut in the wall (maybe the bottom foot of the drywall) where some insulation had fallen in there, and it caught pretty good while I was sweating a fitting off. I had some water next to me and put it out, but it was scary how fast the old shit lit up

on a serious note.....actually the last one was serious.
On a more serious note I replaced my under the sink plumbing shit, what ever it is with a plastic version. Is that ok? Isn't it called a pea trap or something.
yes, the p-trap (cause its shaped like the letter). I like tubular plastic better than brass for this application personally. if you put it on right, it should last more or less forever.

sure, all the time. there are products to help prevent this(heat blanket, "cool gel" etc.) but i never bother to use them. just carry a spray bottle full of water(you need it for cooling and cleaning the pipe after you sweat the joint anyway)
one time, i was in a basement, putting in a water heater, and i was checking the gas cock for leaks. i just use my lighter for this, because house gas is at like 1/2 psi. well, i was spacing out, and i reached over and opened the gas cock with my lighter in front of it. the thing was pointed straight down at the floor, so a column of flame was now betweent me and the damn gas cock. i was scared shitless that i was gonna burn down the house and have to explain how the fire started in the first place, so i reached through the fire and turned it off. afterwards i was like "nice going you stupid fuck!"

fuckin a man. sketch.
closest I've come to really fucking up a customers house (or in this case, the customer) was when I was doing an upstairs bathroom that was right over his office.
they had some floor rot so we took out the sub floor, and I was walking around on the joists, and I stepped on a brace, (it's a 2 x 8 mind you; and should be totally safe) and the fucker blew threw the ceiling. the stud, a bunch of plaster, and I think my channel locks or something all fell right in the guys office chair.
this guy was like, 70 and getting kinda fragile, I honestly think he probably would've died if he was at his desk. and it nailed him in the head.

lol. i had the flu once and i was on the roof with my old boss, putting a fascia on his addition.(and some other shit) It was july in L.A. so the temp was triple digits. i started to get dizzy, so i was like, "sorry boss, i gotta go home" well, my boss kept trying to work without me, and the fascia was slightly warped(16 foot boards always are am i right?) so my boss puts one foot on the fascia to straighten it while trying to use the 16 penny nailer to tack it on. he fell right off and busted his shoulder up bad. I had to do everything for like 6 months

yes, and yes
also, with bidets and hand held shower heads, you can always joke inappropriately with lady customers about how they like that water spray on their snatch, and they always laugh, no matter how old or prude they seem

My toilet has a shitty flush pressure. Like, sometimes when someone shits a few logs will stay a float in the toilet.
How expensive would this be to fix, could I do it myself, or do I need a whole new non shitty toilet?
I replaced the uhh... The little floaty thing in the tank.. and the lever arm, and the little uh.. cap thing that lifts up to cause the flush.
Those are technical plumbing terms, I know.
It's really gross but sense I live with dudes no ones attempted to fix it other than me, and I only replaced the shitty cheap plastic shit from the tank, and the only reason I replaced those was because it had a leak or something, did the constant noise "go wiggle the handle" thing.

there's a piece of debris (like a small rock or metal shaving) in the ballcock(fill valve). replace the ballcock, its probably not worth fixing unless you have an older kohler or toto(the lowboy one piece kind from the late eighties/early nineties)

what brand toilet is it? sometimes its just a matter of putting the right flapper on. if you can find a model number, you can go to a local plumbing supply, and have them give you the right one. sounds like maybe you need the kind with a little foam float attached to the chain

the toilet was installed in the late 80's, probably 89. although the plastic and metal inside of it have all been replaced at one point or another. its old though, its a 4 gallon flush(i think)
thats awesome to know though. its actually in very good shape still, and this is a recent problem. my dad will really appreciate this info
i'll have to look at the actual model when my familys awake, cause i have to walk thru their room to get to that one.

HVAC guys are just pissy cause they spend thier days in the attic. wall hangers and painters tend to be twacked out most of the time IME.

You skipped my question i think but it's chill.
I couldn't tell if you were answering me or Gresh but I'm assuming Gresh because I replaced what I'd imagine to be called a flapper already.

i answered you as well. i was sayin that your toilet probably doesn't take a "universal" flapper, and you need to purchase the one that is designed for your toilet. oftentimes, when a previously working toilet has a shitty flush, its because the flapper is closing too quickly. i don't know what kind you have, but if this is the case, i imagine that the one you need has a foam float attached to the chain. if you already have the right one, you may need to adjust the height of the float(on the chain between the handle lever and the flapper)

The issue was there even before I replaced the flapper though.. It could have been replaced before I moved in though. I'll check it out.

oen time, a guy with a medical condition kept shitting in the master bathroom, even though he knew the drain had come apart under the house. the crawlspace had 3 inches of shitter water with nice logs and TP floating everywhere. we dried it up half assed with an air mover, and then i had to crawl down there, laying a tarp out in front of me as i went, and i raked and bagged up the top few inches of shit mud before i replaced the fucked up pipes that some jackass had scabbed together with a rubber combi and no my name isn't joe.

drywall is basically fire proof and so is insulation.....?
Insulation will kind of spark^sparkle but they make that shit fire proof on purpose.

I paid $2900 for a drain line to be repaired under the basement floor which had to be drilled up. It took 3 guys 6 hours to complete (18 total hours of labor). That breaks down to about $160 per hour per person.
Did I get completely ripped off or is that sound like a typical rate?

I think he's saying to buy the saw and diamond blades.
Also not usually, expensive shit like cartools and jack hammers usually make you pay out the ass in case you fuck it up. It might be cheap, but you'll need a few hundred to actually receive it.
Like auto zone will give you any car tool you need, but you have to pay a shit load if it's expensive but you get the money back when you return it.

2900 doesn't sound too bad, but i probably would have done it cheaper. its in a basement, so that makes it more work. theres a lot of jackhammering and digging involved which is hard labor. you probably could have saved some money by hiring some laborers to do the digging and jackhammering before the plumbers got there. then you just have to pay the plumbing rate for the plumbing work. but that would of course be more legwork on your part to line up different guys for different parts of the job. I don't know if you have post tension cables in your slab, but if you do, they should have had a locator mark them because you really don't want to cut those. If they did a good job, you didn't get ripped off too bad, if they did a half-assed job, you got screwed. is the new concrete nice and level?
btw, i'm basing that off of L.A. prices, i don't really know the going rate wherever you live. also, it depends on if you got a bid beforehand or were paying for time and materials. if you got a bid, you have to keep in mind that he doesn't know exactly what he might run into on your job(theres always problems) so he has to bid for more hours than he thinks it will take, just in case. if everything goes smoothly , you end up paying extra. But, if theres a major snag in the job, you get a good deal. I knew an electrician that lost his ass on a job, because the price of wire jumped so much between when he bid the job, and when he bought materials and started

makaveli8x8 said: why because it sounded like to manly of a job for you? its concrete its harder to screw up than alot of things
It was a good job from what I can tell. I wasn't home while the work was done. It was about 6 ft of pipe that was replaced and the rest of the basement lines were checked with a camera and cleaned as needed. The reason I was uneasy about it was I had to pay $700 for them to hammer up the floor before they would quote the whole job and at that point my basement was wrecked and had no way to use my plumbing in the entire house until the job was done.

Because fuck you and your family to feed.
don't bother with that shit, it a. doesn't really work b. fucks your pipes up if they are made of metal c. makes me charge you extra to drain down a sink full of caustic chemical slurry.
if you feel the need to clear your own drains, you can get a cheap 1/4 inch cable that is handrill driven. they are cheap. like 30 bucks or something at the depot. this will usually do the job on a bathtub hair clog or the like.
a 3/8 to 1/2 cable machine will run you between 100 and 400 used. shop around on craigslist. this will take care of your 2" drains like kitchen sinks and such.
a 5/8 to 3/4 cable machine will cost you between 500 and 1000 used dependeing on condition etc. this will clear 3 and 4 inch drains, and cut roots and whatnot.
if you have those three things in your garage, youre golden on clogs for eternity. (be careful with these tools, if any part of your body gets wrapped in the cable, stop the machine, and reverse it until you are free. don't panic and leave your foot on the airswitch)
oh, and wear gloves at all times because...poopie and stuff

yah i love it when almost the entire back of a cabnet is cut out, or when they don't even cut a square but like 2 or 3 squares because they couldn't get the first one right
anyways i finally got that faucet and installed a new one along with 2 new water valves. do people really use 2 wrenches to get those fuckers on? it was so cramped i couldn't do it unless i leaned in with zero support which would have killed my back, so i just used 1 wrench which im sure was hard on the pipes but didn't have much choice.
also as it turns out it was a delta with a lifetime warrenty, but who's gunna use a warrenty when they need a faucet like right meow.....surprizingly we called them up anyways and they said they were gunna refund us, wow, just wow, nice people over there

also the inside of our water lines looked horrible as fuck, like shit was growing in there. i thought the cholorine was supposed to kill shit like that?
also water still came through them with the house shutoff valve, the main one inside, enough to fill a jar in a couple minutes, the main valve had that big handle, ball valve i think its called, i thought those almost never failed?

glad everything worked out. with compression angle stops(copper pipes), you should use 2 wrenches(there actually a special tool set for this but 2 smaller crescent wrenches work fine) with IPS angle stops (galvanized steel pipes), you can get away with one wrench, but if you sheer off the nipple isnide the wall you're in for a headache. The stuff inside your pipes was probably mineral deposits. if you have steel pipes or very hard water, there are likely to be a lot of minerals crystalizing in the pipes. it usually looks white and crusty or greenish with copper pipes, and rusty orange and white with steel pipes. you should see the blueish crystal sediment inside your water heater.
as for the ball valve. its true that they last much longer than gate valves, but everything failes eventually when your talking about pressurized water. you can turn it off at the water main(at the street) when youre ready to replace te house shutoff. you will need to purchase a T-handled water main key (you could maybe shut it off with a crescent wrench and a pipe wrench)

it takes years to learn plumbing. 6 years as an apprentice if you go through the union.
if you can get into the union, its a great job. if you get a contractors license and have the skill set to run a business, its a great job. if you are a worker bee, in a labor market where every illegal alien on every corner claims they know plumbing, it is a crappy job
Also: the work is physically hard, you will burn yourself and injure yourself in other ways, there's more thinking involved than people expect, and your customers will treat you like an idiot, because pop culture has taught them that plumbers are dumb-dumbs

I'm in the HVAC field. Some crossovers with plumbing. It's cool because we do a little of everything and the pay/benefits are on point. You can retire before your 50 and get 75% of your top earning year annually. Then on top of that good retirement money start your own business and your living the good life. I'm going to be opening up my own shop before that though. Within the next 5 years I'll be self employed. The benefits are good now but my motto is work smarter not harder.

nope. i quit plumbing after 11 years and I'm a full time student/Part-time aquarium service guy right now.
I still do jobs on the side though. I try to bid them out, but if i have to go hourly, i charge $20-100 depending on what i think they can afford. (i almost always bid the jobs though)

if you know what you're doing, bidding a job and cranking it out is so much more time efficient.
if there's a lot of unknowns or you're new, taking an hourly wage isn't so bad though.
I only did one side job for some customers that was based hourly, but there were good people so I didn't mind. they over paid me anyways.
what's the weirdest thing you ever found in a wall, drain, attic/under a house, etc.?

and thats great on new construction or commercial work. Residential plumbers have to deal directly with homeowners quite often, and in particular, the lawyers and engineers will say some condescending shit that i would never let slide if i didn't want their money.

it's the opposite of a pressure gauge which is why it reads from right to left as opposed to reading left to right and it has nothing to do with cars, I'm sure the hydraulic line throws it off a bit but that wont be hooked to anything hydraulic either... here's a hint. there are 2 valves, one is a stop cock at one end, the other is a directional ball valve

I'm going to draw a vacuum on my wood... now let there be more cock jokes
building a vacuum chamber for stabilizing wood burls and punky woods, it will draw all the air out of the wood and when normal atmosphere is restored it will allow the wood to suck in a polymerizing stabilizing agent such as pentacryl, an hour or tow in the oven at 200F will harden it and make previously unusable wood usable
next step, oil change on a vacuum pump, after that I need about $4500 for a milling machine
