Spawn arriving this week. Last minute questions about grow setup
    #21774536 - 06/07/15 03:03 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

I have 20 pounds of blue oyster spawn arriving this week and I am so far behind. I'm also paying 35 dollars a week in farmer's market fees, and I'm nowhere near that point.

This is where I'm at so far:

I have a 14x12 section of my unfinished basement completely sealed off in 6 mill plastic sheeting. There's an entry door equipped with zippers at the front, creating an air lock.

I have two fluorescent light fixtures with prismatic covers. Each one wields four t8 bulbs. There is going to be no natural light entering the room. I'm trying to decide whether I should just use one of the fixtures on the ceiling, in the center of the room, OR if I should use both fixtures and suspend them vertically, back to the back. What do you guys think?

Humidity. I know I need to attain 90% humidity. It was getting slightly humid after just working in that enclosure with my dad for a few hours. Is a misting bottle enough, or do I need a humidifier for that size space? Is it ok to leave the humidifier inside the chamber?

Air exchange. In the back of the chamber is a basement window, probably 12x18 inches. I was thinking of doing two inline vent fans side by side if I could find some to fit. One would bring fresh air in. The other one would be hooked up to duct work that would run to the other end of the chamber, removing air. Does this sound feasible? What's a good air exchange rate? And how does this effect humidity?

Colonization vs Fruiting. I didn't think to make two separate rooms when I constructed the chamber. Can it all be done in the same room?

Respiration. Even with air exchange, I will want to be wearing some sort of respirator inside the chamber I'm assuming. Any recommendations?

Thanks so much guys!

You did get the cart ahead of the horse didn't you?

1 use both lights ceiling mounted but only put 2 bulbs in each of them.

2 your going to need to humidify incoming air.  I like pond foggers in a float ring.  Mist maker is the best source IMO.  Get a case of single disc foggers.  Duct your incoming air into the top of the tote.  Don't duct the humidified air just let it out of the top of the tote.

3 Use one 4-6 inch hydro farm type fan to vent the room.  Duct fresh air from outside to the other side of the room down into your humidification tote with some sort of furnace filter to screen it.

4 You don't need a environmentally controlled room to colonize just lots of shelves

5 3M makes good respirators.  I usually just use vented paper masks.

Your at least a month from your first harvest.  Make pasteurized straw logs asap.  You'll have 3 weeks to get the grow room up and running.  In the meantime get out foraging to fill your table and start building your customer base.

Im with t3chnobily on the foggers, they work amazing and are only $12 ea off amazon. They make multi disc foggers but they are almost always more $ per fogger than just running a handful of the single disc. You will probably need like 4+ foggers with a room that big. Put the foggers in a bucket or tote with 1-2" of water, they perform best in shallow water. Have an intake fan and ducting from the window feeding the tote/bucket then have another duct on the other side feeding your grow chamber the now humid air. Make sure the hose or pipe going from the fogging tote/pail has a slope going back into the pail/tote as water will condense inside the duct. This will supply the room with fresh humid air. You can adjust the humidity by adding or removing foggers, or get fancy and go automated like me. I'd recommend installing a float valve to maintain water level. A purge pump is also a good idea if you have hard water. Get yourself a cheap calibratable humidor hygrometer to check your humidity. In a grow that big you would want a garden hose with fogger attachments or buy a handheld pump insecticide sprayer to mist.

What type of containers/shelving do you plan on growing in? Poly logs? Pails?

Here is my build thread, a bit smaller than your op but everything can be scaled up easily.

I should point out oysters need tons of constant fresh air, especially when you have a lot growing in an enclosed room. If they don't get the FAE they get long and stemmy with small caps.

I see the mist maker foggers on amazon have LED lights on them. Should I go for a fogger without lights or does this not matter?

I'm growing in poly logs. Originally wanted to do 6 foot columns but my zipper door probably won't allow me to move those into the chamber easily, so I will use 3 foot columns, one suspended beneath another.

I don't have any shelving at the moment. Would it be alright to hang the logs in the chamber and let them colonize in there under normal conditions?

So the air intake makes sense to me now. Inline fan with duct work that runs to the far side of the room into a humidity tote. How about outtake? Another inline fan of similar size with no duct work?

Thanks for the detailed responses, guys

You can use one fan if your room is tight enough.  This will put your room under negative pressure and will suck fresh air into the humidifier. This will also protect your house from moisture and spores.

LED's don't matter.  I have found the cheap amazon foggers to be pretty unreliable.  I go through a case of mistmakers a year.

I use a simple diffuser on the exhaust fan (4 in perforated drainage pipe) and block off holes to dial in FAE.  My intake comes from outside and has a floss filter.  Straight down into my humidifier and no post humidifier duct work. I could snap some pics if you'd like.

One design feature with those amazon foggers is they are not designed for 24/7 use and the water should be clean, both of these factors will effect lifespan. I've only had mine for two months running off the controller internment so ill see how they hold up.

Do you plan to multiply that spawn? You should consider making jars or bags and doing some GTG before using it all to spawn. Making your own spawn may cost more initial startup in equipment but will save tons in the long run. I also doubt you can fill that room with logs only using 20 lbs of spawn.

I turn 20lbs of pro spawn into up to 1000x6lb blocks!  It can be done.  Senescence is largely a myth.

Yes but less spawn increases colonization time and increases risk of contamination. You can make 40 jars of spawn with half a lb of spawn and double your spawn for a second batch. Also increased spawn % increases yield by decreasing colonization time and increasing available high density nutrition. Another reason to makeyour own extensions of the culture would be in the event of a massive fuck up where you loose the whole batch.

drake, yea just now realized what you were saying and i agree completely. I thought u were saying take that 20 lbs and spawn it all directly into 6000 lbs substrate .. then realized thats nuts.

Ultimately yes, I would like to produce my own spawn. I have a dozen wide mouth mason jars and a glove box ready to go. But right now I want to dial in on the fruiting chamber. Once everything is running smoothly I will begin G2G transfers. For the time being I will be purchasing spawn in bulk from amycel.

t3chnobility, pictures of your ventilation setup would be much appreciated. Particularly the humidity tote and drainage pipe diffuser.

If I run an exhaust fan right beside the intake, for the purposes of purging CO2 and airborne spores, do I need duct work on that, or can it just be left open?

The exhaust fan should be blowing outside the building so ductwork will be needed. You also want your exhaust intake low and on the opposite side of your intake/humidifier tote creating a crossflow in your chamber of fresh air.

Well both the fans will be within a basement window. If I'm using a 4 inch 165 (I believe) CFM fan for intake, there will be a positive pressure in the room. Do I need a fan of similar  or even the same size for the exhaust?
